Summary: Like any other 7200 drive, I really wonder if all those problems I read with W.D. are because people place them in an oven? I overclock everything, keep 4 fans always running and NEVER had a problem with W.D. I'll bet most problems would not have happened if a case fan was blowing on the drive. W.D. has never given me a problem. I build only with W.D. and Never a call it failed after building around 40 computers in last 2 years.

Worked till after warranty expired.

Pros: Low cost, quiet.
Cons: Quit after 3yrs. 10 months. Been having problems with WD drives not lasting very long after warranty expires. Some right after 3 yrs.

Summary: To: "Keep it Cool" This drive was in a PC that the case never even got warm to touch. I'm a firm believer in cooling. So it's not the temperature doing it. Have not had problems with WD drives till the last 3 to 4 yrs. Since then all the blue drives don't last. Have a Black that's running good. Have had 2 Raptor drives fail the same way. Using WD's test disk to confirm the drives are bad. So far the Green and Black drives are still running but they are not out of warranty yet. Will see what happens. That's 4 Blue and 2 Raptors in the last 5 yrs. that have failed me.

Summary: I own two of these (used in one PC) and both of them had problems less than one year after purchase. One drive developed a knocking noise while the other one developed a clunk and spindown then spinup noise. Thank goodness that both of them didn't develop problems simultaneously!

Summary: Now that WD is changing their warranty on these 2MB-buffer drives to 1 year from 3 years, I wonder is this is a more widespread problem. Drive developed bad sectors without warning, even with S.M.A.R.T. enabled in the BIOS. Very disappointed. Online support was good, but they should allow expedited return or upgrade return online, instead of requiring an email message or phone call. Supplied diagnostic software doesn't run under WindowsXP, though web-based applications was able to diagnose faults.

Summary: This is a great drive. My first drive had failed and the customer support was great. My only gripe is that they wanted me to pay for the shipping. I just sent them an email and they agreed to pick up the tab for the shipping. After i got my replacement drive i have had no problems. I never really have taken into account the noise factor. But even if it was noticable, i wouldn't care. I would still like to know why the first one failed. But besides that, it gets the job done.
