Don't install CA 2008
by John in MD on October 15, 2007
Pros: There are none
Cons: No tech support. Many bugs. Crashed internet connectivity on two computers after "upgrade".

Summary: This was my third install of the CA security suite. The first was a rebranded Zone Alarm Suite - no problem. The second was their first "home grown" suite 2007 - ok. The third, "2008" crashed two computers at home. I have no internet.
If you look up a problem on their website, you frequently get the response that Tech Support is aware of the problem and will provide a solution in a future update. Well I can't access the internet anymore, so how the **** can I get the update.
Do yourself a favor, by a different security solution.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

horrible product, tech support worse

Summary: It asks me to be logged as administrator, and I am. I was told by online automated help to uninstall and reinstall the software. Unfortuneately, it won't let me uninstall from the control panel. I tried their option as well with no success. I now have a permanent reminder of how sorry this CA product is staring back at me from the tray. It also makes the PC startup time slower. Luckily most people that know about CNET are more savvy than myself and will see that this product has terrible reviews. O and their live tech support costs $20 per incident, even after their online support fails you. But if you like endless frustration and hanging the PC out the window by its power cord while screaming profanities and threats at it to restore itself to its original mediocraty then this is the right product for you. ok im done. thanks for reading.

slow, no sound, no secondary video output

Summary: I got the CA anti-virus and anti-spyware 2008 for free about a year ago. I generally run Linux so the CD was just chilling on my desk. Last night, I found a virus on my USB key drive so I figured it wouldn't kill me to protect my Vista partition. Bad idea!
1) computer was extremely slow. I installed in on a machine with a Turion 64 X2 2GHz; both cores were used to almost 100%. I have Avast on my home machine (single core 1.8GHz) and I can barely tell it's there.
2) no more sound
3) no more video output to projector
I rebooted a few times to no use. Everything worked fine again after I uninstalled the software though. So it wasn't too painful. But yeah, since I won't even use it after I got it for free, I really wouldn't pay money for this software.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Killer of OS and Applications

Pros: Company logo is cute. Price is competitive.
Cons: Extremely instrusive. Slows machine to a crawl. Can't uninstall. Customer Support is useless.

Summary: Bought 3-user license. Installed on my son't XP machine, none of his web-based games would run any more. On my Windows 2000 Pro machine it corrupted Internet Explorer. Customer service sent me a link to a third party site offering to help me make my computer run faster. POP-ups appeared almost with every key depression. Tried to uninstall it - got all kinds of errors. Had to reinstall IE. Still can't do site searches on CNN, ATT, and so on. Can't run videos on CNN or YouTube. Am wiping my disk and reinstalling Windows and all my applications this weekend. I won't be reinstalling CA, thank you very much. Pay your money, take your chances, no support, no refunds.

CA froze my system repeatedly.

The automatic update function frequently doesn't work and the program becomes useless. The taskbar icon will show an exclamation mark indicating that an update is necessary even though is presumably does this automatically. After connecting to CA's website and starting the update manually, the download appears to complete and delivers a message saying that the update was successful. However, the exclamation point on the taskbar icon will still be there. This indicates that nothing happened during the manual update even though the website has given the message that the upgrade was successful. Windows will tell you that your computer may be at risk due to out-of-date Virus Protection. The CA help menu tells you to uninstall and reinstall the software to fix this problem. Doing so may or may not work. I spent an entire Saturday on the phone with a very professional technician in Bangladesh whose accent WAS intelligible. He tried everything he could think of, but couldn't fix it. He refunded my $20 fee. I have also tried to use Windows' restore function with mixed results. Eventually, the system will freeze and you will have to reformat the disk and reinstall Windows and all your programs. This happened to me several times and I finally purchased Bit Defender which has worked so far. (I reinstalled everthing a couple times because I only have a couple programs on the Windows side of my iMac.) I initially thought the problem might be due to the fact that I am using an intel-based iMac driven by Boot Camp. However, the same thing has occurred on my Toshiba laptop. I have Windows XP Professional on both computers. Some reviewers seem to have had good luck, but my problems were so pervasive that I ditched CA entirely.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Do not purchase!! Horrible product and worse support.
by 8797 on June 27, 2011
Pros: When it worked (for a short time), there was lots of flexibility. Unfortunately, you have no input on their downloads and pre-set features and when it doesn't work, you are completely out of luck with no support.
Cons: Automatic "upgrades" have crashed our 2 computers twice. The "upgrades" locked down access to the internet and provided no way to change settings. Ultimately had to uninstall to restore internet access. CA refused to refund our money because it happene
Summary: Worst company and product you could possibly find.

bad product. Let a trojan thru after using default
by bluwysx2 on September 22, 2009
Pros: nothing at all. did not protect my system. Unable to do anything with it. I have a piece of software taking up room on my computer that can only be removed if I pay a technician 80 dollars plus tax.
Cons: Pricey ... the new update was imediately disabled by a virus and Now I am unable to uninstall and reinstall.

Summary: I installed using all the defaults suggested. The antivirus was immediately disabled and now I am unable to uninstall and reinstall it. I went to their tech support website which is very easy to use but of no help. It also tried to uninstall its own virus scan and was unable to. I am hoping it does not interfere with the new antivirus I will be installing.

You'll Regret It If You Buy CA 2009

Summary: I purchased this product to keep my family computers safe. We had no problems with the other products. Once I installed the program it caused many problems. I could not use my computer even though it was brand new. My husband experienced the same type of problem. Customer service is practically nonexistent. You have option of servicing the problem via email or online chat, if you're lucky enough to have internet access after installing their program. Telephone help cost $19.95 per call. A five minute install caused me 2 weeks of problems. I had to uninstall the CA and restore my computer. Don't waste the aggravation.

Capable of slowing your PC down to a crawl
by jensays on August 20, 2008

Summary: Not to mention that it will indicate you need an update, and then not get rid of the flag even when that's been done. I tried this on one PC - it was pushed on me by a salesperson as "free after rebate". As someone in the field I'm ashamed of myself for having been talked into that deal against my better judgment.
