- Bottom Line:
- McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 packs a powerful protection arsenal--but it's far too slow. Loyal McAfee users should upgrade for the automatic spyware and phishing blockers, but the rest of us should seek security elsewhere, such as ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 6.

Enter Mcafee Internet Security Suite. So far the McAfee product has run quitely in the background on my PC. I barely even know it's there.
The User Interface is quite nice and I really like being able to track and report internet attacks.
I do reccomend this product and for those having problems with NIS it's worth the switch.
Unlike Symantec you actually do get support on this product if you need it. They have a Live-Chat option where you can actually interact with a person in real time free of additional charges. I really feel that is important.5 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Really worth it!
by Tendency on November 17, 2005
Pros: Very easy to use.
Cons: Slows the computer's boot time.

When I was told to try "McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006" I gave it a try and;
- Runs quite on the background.
- No extra PC specs required to let it fully work.
- Faster booting time then "Norton Internet Security 200X".
- Really, and yes, really easy to use. I do like the tracking tool to trace someone's IP. (to report)
- The menus of "McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006" are better accessible and useable then "Norton Internet Security 200X".
- Very good Spyware protection.
- The Privacy Service is also nice.
The tech support, as CNet says, aren't bad at all.
They've helped me faster and better then Norton ever did before with the same, by myself created, problem.
The only disadvantages about "McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006" are;
- Like any other Firewall Integrated Security, the booting time increasement of your PC. Normally, without any virusscanner, it would take about 20 to 30 seconds to fully boot up the PC. Now, with "McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006", it takes about 1 á 2 minutes to fully boot up your computer. Though it's faster then "Norton Internet Security 200X".
- The virus scanning is really slow, but it finds everything. (When updated) A slow scan is a deep/good scan.
I would recommend this program to everyone who surfs/downloads a lot. Even for gamers this is a good protection tool, because gaming performance wont decrease.5 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Two words say it all: IT SUCKS

Summary: The prior version was much better. This new version is terrible! My PC used to be fast, now it takes me back to the days of a TRS-80. After installing the update I saw for the first time my 1.5 gb ram totally used. Accessing the net is incredibly slow, photo and graphics processing is out of the question. The only way I can accomplish much of anything is to shut McAfee down and let the XP system provide protection. If I am away from the PC and not using it, I suppose McAfee is great. I would not recommend this for anyone that really intends on using their PC.

Very Poor Support

Summary: I have had McAfee Internet Suite several years now and just upgraded again. Their marketing department should give courses to support on how to keep in touch with customers. Within a day of paying $70.00 I got another advisory from them telling me my virus definitions were out of date. Attempts to login to (again) update were unsuccessful; nearly a week of email traffic finally resolved this. (I still turn the computer on routinely to find that Virusscan is not running; they cannot help because they don't respond to most emails for support.) I also sent in documents for a $20.00 rebate and was advised on 12/26 that my claim was denied due to insufficient data provided. (Second time that's happened.) I gave up and have requested a full refund. They have promised that; if I get the refund then I'll be looking for something else. This is a real shame, because at one time they were (to me) one of the few Gold Standards for good software and exemplary client support.

Summary: After giving up on Norton Internet Security 2006 (see my review), I tried McAfee ISS 2006. I've used McAfee AV for years on my office PC and was quite satisfied; it works and doesn't cause problems. McAfee ISS 2006 is awful. First, you open the box and all that is in it is a CD. $70 bucks and no manual! Then, to install it requires 6 or more reboots (I lost count). Then, they ask if you want to provide your zip code and join their anonymous reporting system for viruses. Hey, I'm game. I entered my zip code, and it told me I had to enter 5 digits. I entered it again and got the same error. It dawned on me that my zip code starts with a zero, and the software writer and testers live on the West coast. Hello! California! New England zip codes start with a zero! Unlike Norton, which does a live update with little fuss, you have to register on the McAfee web site to get their updates. Bah! Unlike Norton, which can do most updates w/o reboots, McAfee seems to require a reboot for every little update. Guys! This is the 21st century! MS Live OneCare installs with just one reboot. If they can do it, you can do it.
But the coup de grace came when McAfee NIS reconfigured Eudora to insert its filter into the mail stream. It changed my config inside Eudora! And broke it! I'm no dummy; I have a degree from a famous engineering school, I write software for a living, and I know my way around PCs. If the can't grab the data stream without leaving the mail setup alone, they shouldn't try. I know what they were trying to do, and I followed their instructions to the letter, but it still didn't work. Checked out the McAfee support site and found 7-8 pages of "solved" technical issues and 108 pages of "unsolved" technical issues. Not a word on solving this problem in Eudora. I can't be the only person still using Eudora, but apparently I'm the only person trying to use it with McAfee Internet Security 2006. Having given up on NIS2006, and being supremely unimpressed by McAfee ISS 2006, I gave up and returned it to the office supply store and got my $69.99 back. Bought MS Live OneCare for ~20. It installed cleanly with one reboot. It is good for 3 PCs. It works with Eudora. Nice.
As with my comments under NIS2006, I have to say that McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 is an embarrassment to my profession. This software never should have left the lab. I have a garden-variety year-old Dell PC running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all current patches. Very little software and all of it is mainline and standard. There is no excuse for the problems I encountered. None. If McAfee was my company, I'd fire the VP of Engineering, and I'd assign the VP of Quality Assurance to the trash collection team, where he or she can do no harm.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
