Logitech MK700 price range: $84.99

The good: "Incurve" key design and cushioned palm rest alleviate wrist irritation; impressive battery life claims (three years for keyboard, one for mouse); Hyper-fast scroll dial offers incremental fluidity; inexpensive.
The bad: Doesn't use Logitech's new Unifying USB receiver or Darkfield laser sensor; Hyper-fast scroll dial inconveniently located underneath the mouse; lefties can't use the sculpted mouse; simple LCD screen adds unnecessary bulk to the keyboard design.
The bottom line: Although it's not our favorite keyboard and mouse combination, the Logitech Wireless Desktop MK700 set earns our recommendation for its comfortable "Incurve" key design, quick scrolling mouse, and impressive battery life. If you're looking to upgrade your input devices and are on a budget, this $100 combination deserves your attention.
Logitech offers a huge selection of keyboards and mice that each cater to a different consumer, but its Wireless Desktop MK700 is meant for the everyday user that just needs a comfortable combo that won't break the bank. We're disappointed that it doesn't use Logitech's newest input device technologies, but that doesn't take away from its other useful features including: ergonomically shaped keys, superlong battery life, and the capability to adjust the sensitivity of the scroll dial. Check out Logitech's $130 Cordless Desktop Wave Pro if money isn't an issue, but the average user on a $100 budget will be perfectly happy with the Wireless Desktop MK700.
Logitech's newest quirky keyboard design is called Incurve. Unlike last year's Cordless Desktop Wave keys, the MK700 keyboard retains the same uniform layout, but the keys dip down in the center of the keyboard and slowly curve up at the end. According to Logitech, this will keep your fingers pain-free longer than a standard keyboard design. In addition, the MK700 keys have a longer travel distance that, according to Logitech, makes them even more comfortable. The keys are nearly silent when pressed and have just the right amount of tactical feedback against our fingers--we actually used the MK700 as our main keyboard and mouse combo for a week and found the cushioned palm rest and soft keys very easy to use even after hours of typing.
The top of the keyboard features a set of media playback controls surrounding a small one-line LCD dashboard that lets you take a quick glance at your remaining battery life, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, and Num Lock indicators while you type. We're all for functional LCD screens such as the one on Logitech's G9 gaming keyboard, but this little guy barely serves a purpose--a job that could have been done cheaper with a tiny solid LED.
The keyboard also has several extra shortcut buttons to quickly open up the calculator, mailbox, media player, and so on, and you can customize all those shortcut keys using the Logitech SetPoint software included in the box.
The sculpted mouse you get in the package is very similar to the Logitech Performance Mouse MX, but the sculpted shape is a lot narrower and didn't fit our hand quite as comfortably. You get six buttons across the mouse, including the scroll dial, the left and right clickers, a large application shortcut key on the top left, and two forward and back buttons just above the area for your thumb. Again, all of the main buttons are easily configured with the SetPoint software. Finally, there's a small LED battery indicator on the side that blinks when you're running out of power.
One of Logitech's signature mouse features is called "Hyper-fast" scrolling that lets you toggle between a ratcheted and free-spinning scroll dial. The Performance Mouse MX lets you easily switch between the two by pressing a button under the dial, while the MX700's switch is located underneath the mouse itself. It's a hassle to flip the thing over every time you need to breeze through a long document or Web page. Luckily, Logitech makes up for it with the capability to dial-in incremental fluidity, meaning you can adjust the switch to scroll as fast or as slow as you like. There isn't much to say about its performance--the mouse works fine on most surfaces; however, its $80 price tag for the combo means you don't get Logitech newest Darkfield laser sensor that even works on transparent glass and other surfaces that challenge traditional laser sensors.
The MK700 desktop set's truly impressive feature is its unparalleled battery life. Although we don't have the means to fully test out the claim, according to Logitech, two AA batteries will power the mouse for one year, while the keyboard can eke out up to three years if you can remember to switch the power switch off when you're done.
The MK700 is also missing Logitech's new Unifying technology to link with a computer. Instead, it just comes with a standard-size USB dongle that works with both the keyboard and mouse, but isn't transferable to other devices in Logitech's expansive line of peripherals. It's not a big deal unless you already own other peripherals that have the Unifying dongle.

Summary: I am a CAD drafter and put in about 50hrs a week on my computer. Keyboards and mice do not last long in my office (1-2 yrs tops). Because of my demanding use on this type of product and my constant need to replace them I have become quite the skeptic. I was pleasantly surprised by the MK700, however, I did just purchase this item so as for longevity, I cannot make any claims. In terms of ease of typing this keyboard is at the top of my list. The buttons are responsive with a soft smooth touch and easy to find with my fingertips. The quick access (shortcut) function buttons can be set to always on which makes them useable without having to hold down the FN button. I like this because now I can access many programs and folders that I use often with a single push of a button. One thing that could be a problem for some is that many of those shortcut buttons share the F1-F12 buttons so if you use F1-F12 a lot then you may not want the quick buttons always on. I like the dedicated calculator and CD/DVD ROM eject buttons because I use those often and on my laptop DVD ROM the tiny little eject button sucks.
To correct an earlier post, the kit I purchased in November of 2010 DOES come with the unifying USB receiver. The receiver is very small and perfect for laptop users and the kit also comes with a special USB extender so if you are using a desktop the receiver can be plugged into the "included" extender wire and positioned so you get the best reception.
Let's talk about the mouse. The mouse is the MK705 using Logitech's "Performance Laser". I have tried it on a myriad of surfaces and it seems to work flawlessly on all surfaces i have tried. Some of those surfaces are mouse pad, wood grain plastic laminate desktop, paper, glossy book surface, micro fiber couch arm. This mouse does not work on glass. In terms of functionality, luckily I am right handed because as another reviewer pointed out the mouse is not reversible. For right hander's the mouse is quite functional and has many customizable shortcut buttons. The fast scroll wheel is wonderful for those long documents and can be turned on or off with a press of a button located near the wheel. This scroll wheel has all the newer standard functions and will scroll (wheel) up, down and (click) side to side with a tilt of the finger. The wheel is also a (middle) button which can be pressed down. Some of my older mice had a mind of their own and would scroll side to side inadvertently when the wheel was pressed down which was frustrating. Not the MK705! It seems to do what I tell it to do rather that what it wants to do. This is critical for me because I use the middle button a lot.
Bottom line this is a nice keyboard (anyone) and mouse (right hander's) combo. I would certainly recommend to anyone, who like me, have only purchased combos in the 50-70 dollar range. Spend a little more ($100.00 for this set) and you will find that with this kit, you get what you pay for.
PS. Please, if you get the kit and it does not work right out of the box like mine did, take it back and exchange it rather than immediately write a bad review.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Never Ending Battery Life!
by KPM171 on September 2, 2010
Pros: Did I mention battery life?? Comfortable keyboard, useful funciton keys, customizeable mouse functions, & very easy to use software. The price point is/was excellent for this combo.
Cons: I'd like the keys & LCD to be back-lit, but other wise I have no complaints.
Summary: I'm using this desktop combo at the office to work with my dell docking station. Logitec products, I've noticed, offer an insanely long battery life and this set ...
Summary: I'm using this desktop combo at the office to work with my dell docking station. Logitec products, I've noticed, offer an insanely long battery life and this set is no exception. The keyboard offers 3 years of battery life off of 2 AA batteries while the mouse offers 12 months off of the same. Toss in fully customizable commands, keys, and mouse features and you've got yourself one hell of a deal! I think this set has been replaced by the MK710, but for the money you save if you shop around a little for the MK700, it's well worth it.

Good Keyboard/Mouse Combo. Bad Usability.
by claytech0522 on August 7, 2010
Pros: It has nice keys, and the mouse is comfortable to hold. The hyper fast scrolling is also a good bonus.
Cons: Screen on keyboard adds too much height to the keyboard to fit under some drawers on desks. After less than a year, it starts to decrease in performance.

Summary: This keybooard works very nicely. I have owned it since January of 2010. Now, in August, the keyboard is starting to jam. When I type something, it delays and won't show up on the screen. Or, it adds extra letters on something. Much like it did above with the word "keyboard." I have repeaditly put new batteries in it, assuming the batteries might have been duds. Not fixing it. I think there is something wrong with it, and I am unhappy about it.

So far, it's great.
by gflores911 on April 19, 2010
Pros: Plug and play installation. Very comfortable keyboard and mouse. Soft-touch keyboard, very sensitive and speedy mouse.
Cons: Another user commented on erratic mouse behavior. I placed the US dongle in a USB hub that happened to be closer to the mouse and keyboard....problem solved. A little distance and nearby objects affects wireless reception.
Summary: It's my first wireless keyboard and mouse. So far I am very happy with it and will recommend it.

comfortable, accurate, smooth, excellent key response
by ljboss on November 14, 2009
Pros: Very easy setup, outstanding battery life (if you believe Logitech, which I ususally do). New improved keyboard tilt leg structures. logical function keys preprogrammed. Mouse is terrific.
Cons: Silly battery level guage.
Summary: Best keyboard and mouse I have ever used on PC's since 1985, with a few Macs along the way.

Going back to the store
by SMOTU on March 4, 2010
Pros: Caps lock indicator ... that's it.
Cons: Within 15 minutes the keyboard was dead. Had to unplug and reinsert the USB dongle to get it working again. Mouse motion is EXTREMELY erratic, with multiple freezes. HATE the scroll wheel on this thing ... VERY mushy ... no feedback!
Summary: This replaces a two year old, low end wireless combo from Logitech. The functionality of special functions on the keyboard takes a step backwards. Other keyboards (including my old Logitech) ...
Summary: This replaces a two year old, low end wireless combo from Logitech. The functionality of special functions on the keyboard takes a step backwards. Other keyboards (including my old Logitech) used one key to start programs, such as opening email; this keyboard requires using two keys ... Function key plus the other key. Logitech hypes the 2.4 GHz output but the erratic motion of the mouse (I'm assuming it's a communications issue with the dongle) makes this combo good for nothing but a paper weight.
Basically Logitech has a ZERO with this combo, IMO. This one is going right back to the store.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
