Worked great for 11 days.
by techtraveller on October 19, 2009
Pros: It was comfortable, solid, very fast
Cons: USB connection sucked, to be frank. Cord broke in 11 days and I had to hold it tight just to get my information off so I could return it. I was VERY disappointed.

Summary: This was a great idea, but is fatally flawed where the usb cord connects. It is too short to reach most ports and even with an extension the cord was vulnerable to bending and broke within two weeks. I really wanted this to work, but the weakness in the USB cord is just not acceptable. I purchased a WD after I returned it.

***** AVOID THIS PIECE OF JUNK AT ALL COSTS ****
by vamann on April 9, 2010
Pros: Rugged design is a good idea -- somebody should build one ;)
Works well for a little while.
Cons: USB CABLE DESIGN IS DEFECTIVE and WILL SOON FAIL UNDER NORMAL USE. Mine died for no apparent reason, and according to posts on several sites on the Internet, so did dozens of other people's drives.
Summary: How can Hitachi have the audacity to hype this drive as being rugged when the average schoolgirl could easily break it without even trying?
Some eager/hungry lawyer should file ...

Some eager/hungry lawyer should file a class action suit against Hitachi and make them stop advertising and selling this trash.

Pros: This is my favorite external Hard Drive! I use it in the field, and between three different Mac computers. it is both durable and reliable.
Cons: I used to think 500GB was a con, until my 1TB Drive from a different manufacturer failed.
I"m going back to the Hitachi 500GB.

Summary: After 3 times of usage, could no longer access any of our data on this external drive because of the defective build-in USB cord. Hitachi's customer service was not very helpful nor very knowledgeable and wanted to resend us another one of the same model after acknowledging that there were many returns on this very same model. What's the point?
So next time, besides reading the editor's review, I will make sure to read the user's review inst
