The good: Fast write speeds; comes with backup and restore software; compact size makes it easy to tote around; generous warranty.
The bad: Restore software doesn't work with Macs; backup software is too basic for power users.

I want hot swap...this doesn't

Summary: This little drive, nice size, comes with a CD with some software on it, and a quick scan card to walk you through install. I did what it told me, and soon found it frustrating that what I was told i would 'see' onscreen wasn't happening at all. After tinkering with it, and feeling like I had mounted the drive and set it up properly, I copied a folder to it that I would travel with the next day. All seemed fine. Except the next day, when I arrived at the home office, it wouldn't mount on my mac there. Awesome. It's why I bought it — to be able to carry a smaller drive when I travel but regretted not bringing the older larger drive. I emailed customer service and have not heard back. Fast forward a month — I figure I'd better re-try the steps and see if I can get it going and then test on my wife's mac. I reinstalled the Maxtor Manager as instructed, and it informed me my MacPro would need to be restarted after install. Ok. No prob. Except my MacPro hangs up on retsart because this thing is attached to it. And attaching the Mini requires 2 USB ports which is kind of a beating. Serves me right for making this impulse buy at an Office Depot before doing any homework. $120 in the can. I guess it's an ok drive if you use it as a last resort backup.

Summary: has everything but unlike other devices, it does not come with a driver cd. The drivers are kept on the drive itself. I know what you will say, download it from the web but you cannot. You have to write to seagate for them to send it to you. I have written to them today. That is so unnecessary really.

Good, fast, drive in a shirt pocket size package

Summary: This is great little high capacity, USB, hard drive in a very small package. The small size is especially nice for a laptop PC. You can easily store and/or backup your important data on it and keep it safe and separate from your PC. I primarily use it for transfering data from one PC to another.
I have one USB outboard hard drive that also has to be plugged into an electric outlet. The fact that this Maxtor Mini requires nothing but the USB cable that comes with it, is very handy. On that same note, the USB cable that comes with the unit is a bit confusing at first. It has a small plug on one end that attaches to the drive and the other end of the cable is a "Y" that has two of the standard size USB plugs on it. One of the plugs on the "Y" cable supplies data and power to the Mini drive. The other plug on the "Y" cable supplies only power. One can also plug the "power only" plug into a second USB port on their PC, if they find they need more power to operate the drive. Otherwise, it will work OK on the data/power plug alone. So far I have only needed the data/power plug alone.
The drive comes with some software on it for security backups and other features. For my purposes I reformatted the drive, erased everything on it and use it as a straight drive that requires no special software for it on the computers.
I experienced one small glitch with the Mini. While the drive worked perfect on 3 computers that I attached it to, I encountered a problem with XP Pro. Service Pack 3. The drive showed up in the device manager, but was not recognized in "My Computer." Likewise, I could not read or write to it. I found the problem to be that XP Pro. Service Pack 3, did not automatically assign a drive letter to the Maxtor Mini as it should have. It is however a simple problem to correct.
Right click on the my computer icon and select "Manage" from the menu. When the computer management window opens, select "Disk Management." Find your Maxtor Mini external drive on the list and right click on it. Then, select the option to change the drive letter path. Once you manually select a drive letter for the Maxtor Mini, it will work fine. I simply opened the drive path boxes and assigned the drive letter "M" for Maxtor and I was in business.
Again, I only had this problem with XP Pro. Service Pack 3. Vista, XP Home, etc., worked well with no corections at all.
Hope this is helpful,
DB

Unusable product
by JD81 on November 29, 2009
Pros: Price I guess
Cons: Its unusable. It worked for less than 6 months before it corrupted everything on it. I erased everything and started over only to get the same results. Now, my computer (and laptop) will not even read that it's connected, when even the light is on
Summary: Its sole purpose is to back up files, and it does not. I guess they deserved to get bought out by seagate.

Never had a problem, does everything I was looking for!
by MysteryLover379 on September 14, 2009
Pros: I use mine primarily to carry almost all my files (especially my 60+ gigs of music!) since my old laptop HD is much too small.
Cons: I have no complaints at all. In fact, I liked mine so much I bought my boyfriend one just to take his music to work (yeah, same 60+ gigs).
Summary: It works great to take files back-and-forth from work and my freelance gigs. Also functions as a great back-up device for my laptop files. I'm looking at purchasing a ...
Summary: It works great to take files back-and-forth from work and my freelance gigs. Also functions as a great back-up device for my laptop files. I'm looking at purchasing a pair to use for rotation back-up of our server files where one can be taken and stored off-site every other week and the other left for incremental back-ups throughout the week. They're easy to use, the software is adequate for quick-and-dirty incremental and full back-ups of everything, and they're small enough to grab and go. I don't use the one-touch push button, I schedule stuff to happen when I'm not using the computer.

Summary: The driver is store inside the harddisk. Its not even downloadable unless you write in including the details reporting that you need the software. For my case, I created a password for my harddisk and now when my laptop is formated, I was unable to use the harddisk anymore unless I download the driver, which you "cant". Well its a good harddisk with dumb driver.

Very fast hard drive, big enough for my needs, I wouldn't use it to back up my hard drive, to small.
by roartor on June 5, 2008
Pros: Great hard drive!, very fast transfer speeds.
Cons: I didn't care for the software, I uninstalled and saved the setup files on the hard drive and it works fine as just a basic storage device for me.

Summary: Considering all I wanted from an external hard drive was extra storage to keep my most important files safe if my computer crashed, I am very happy with it, I like that I can drag and drop files into folders in it that I made, I plugged it into my other computer and it read the files just fine, I have it networked so I don't have to keep unplugging it, my files are safe now and I feel much better.

by nishankjain on May 5, 2008
Pros: pocket size
Cons: didn't get detected on even 7 different PC's
Summary: My experience with this was pathetic as it didn't even get detected and replacement people say that data as well as power chord can't be changed
