Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition (100GB) price range: $58.99

The good: The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition offers a large capacity (60GB or 100GB), intuitive and useful utilities, and speedy performance.
The bad: The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition is a little bigger than some of the portable drives we've seen, and we'd also like to see a padded carrying case for it.
The bottom line: The combination of quick read and write performance, useful utilities, easy setup, and a fair price makes the tiny Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition drive a winner.
The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition isn't the smallest portable hard drive we've seen; both the Apricorn EZ Mini and the Transcend StoreJet are smaller (and include carrying cases, to boot). Still, it's no behemoth. It weighs less than 8 ounces and is about the size of two decks of cards, side by side--definitely small enough to slip into a purse or a laptop bag.
The drive's body is silver-colored plastic and the black side pieces are slightly rubbery, reminiscent of the rest of the OneTouch III family. A single button graces the front edge of the drive and the back features only a mini USB port and a power port. The drive is bus-powered, but some laptop USB hubs may not provide enough power. For this reason, Maxtor ships the drive with a Y-shaped USB cable. Most users will need to plug in only the single data and power connector, but those who need more power for the drive can plug in the second connector as well. (If both ports fail to provide enough power, Maxtor sells an optional power supply.)
Installing the drive and the included software is a snap. Instead of shipping a CD with the drive, Maxtor loads the software onto the drive itself. Simply plug the OneTouch III Mini Edition drive into your PC, and the software installation window will open automatically. Click through the setup wizard, reboot your PC, and you're done. The whole routine takes just a couple of minutes. Maxtor's OneTouch Manager interface lets you manage various components of your drive, including scheduled backup, security, system rollback, and restore (all using Maxtor's software). The interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to use, with six clearly labeled buttons: Home, Settings, Backup, Restore, Sync, and Rollback. All of the utilities are clearly illustrated and simple to use, but should you need more help, clicking the Maxtor help button in the Manager takes you directly to Maxtor's support Web site.
On the CNET Labs' test bench, the 100GB OneTouch III Mini Edition proved itself to be a speedy performer. Over a USB 2.0 connection, the 5,400rpm drive wrote our 10GB test folder in 12 minutes, 37 seconds, and read it back in 10 minutes, 18 seconds. These times are about equal with those of some of the larger external hard drives we've tested recently.
Maxtor backs the OneTouch III Mini Edition with a standard one-year warranty. Toll-free phone support is available weekdays from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. MT, and you can e-mail tech support via an online form. Maxtor's Web site also has a knowledge base, downloadable manuals and drivers, and troubleshooting resources. The drive is so simple, though, you probably won't need the help.
The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini edition is a welcome addition to the OneTouch III family. It offers fast performance; a small, sleek case; and easy-to-use utilities for your backup and storage needs.

Software deficient and dangerous
by caymanjeff on December 6, 2006
Pros: Drive works fine
Cons: Software misses many critical files in backup
Summary: Taken from user in AMAZON.com that said it better than I could:

Comes with essentially no printed documentation.
The software needed to install is on the hard drive itself (as is documentation).
BIG PROBLEM: The backup this thing will make is not a complete backup at all: it will not back up any files that are open, hidden or system files and folders, compressed files/folders, or encrypted files or folders.
This means, for example, if you use Microsoft Outlook, your critical .pst file with all your email, calendar, and contacts will not be backed up by the included '1-touch' software, or by the 'MaxBackup' program! In my opinion, the software supplied with this thing is so useless it is dangerous as many will think they are getting backups and only realize they don't have a backup of needed data until it's too late. And this limitation isn't disclosed in writing since there's nothing wirtten other than a basic how to install sheet.
(Solution may be to use Microsoft XP's built-in Backup program - and forget the 'one touch'.)
PROBLEM #2: Maxtor says there is 2-step protection of data - encryption and drive lock. The drive lock relies on the software that's preloaded on the drive. Well, if you have a hard drive crash and you've enabled the drive lock, you won't be able to re-install the software needed to unlock the drive because the drive is locked and the software you need is on the locked drive. Smart. Whether the data on the drive is really 'encrypted' I'll leave to someone else to figure out - with the inconsistencies I see already, I wouldn't count on it.12 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

It can't even be returned since Staples no longer carries it--guess they figured out it was a poor performer too?

Back up your backup if this is your choice of backup
by mt.trailguy on February 27, 2009
Pros: Easy to install. A true plug n play. Configuring backups is also very easy.
Cons: Windows XP was frequently unable to recognize the drive, necessitating disconnect and reboot to resolve the problem.
Summary: Other than the recognition problem, it worked fine. Until recently, that is, when the disconnect and reboot no longer worked and it became a nice looking paperweight.

Not much more to say about it. Spend your money elsewhere. -

Summary: Maxtor hard drives based on my experience are prone to hardware malfunction. I am a technician for over 7 years and I witnessed many failing Maxtor drives. Maxtor is more likely to fail 50% more than Seagate drives and usually will have a short lifespan which will often end in a disaster. If you care about your data stay away from Maxtor. Their engineers still need to perfect their stolen technology and their product is kinda experimental at the users' expense. Go Seagate or Western Digital. Not recommended for data storage, it's dangerous and costly

Summary: Actually I have the 160GB model. I first considered the newer model (Mini 4), but this one was one sale so got it instead. Turns out not a bad choice at all. I think it is a great drive. User friendly, small and well build. I also considered the WD and some other brands but none of them had the external backup button. You can easily schedule a backup through the software supplied on the drive which automatically installs. But for me it was a plus, I could kick off the backup with this button on the front, before leaving for a meeting. This way I do not have to worry it would start when I am actually doing something else. The software allows you to set up encryption. I use the drive on 3 different machines. Make sure you disable the security before you are done installing the software on all the PCs. I like the fact that the backup is a straight file to file copy to the drive. So no backup-image files and such. It keeps multiple history folders (configurable) that only store the changed files. I comes with a USB cable with two usb plugs, for extra power. However you only need to use one and I have also used a regular cable. All works good! I think this is a great buy!
