The Bottom Line Replacing the iBook, Apple's MacBook--the little sibling to the more powerful, feature-rich, and expensive MacBook Pro--features a 13.3-inch wide-screen display and a new color choice. It corrects a handful of the iBook's shortcomings, hits a reasonable price point, and makes a great compromise between size and portability. Apple has been content to issue minor periodic hardware updates to the 13-inch MacBook, but the modest performance gains and new Leopard OS keep it in our top tier of laptop recommendations. The new MacBook, updated to Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU, compares very favorably with Apple's high-end MacBook Pro line, offering premium performance at a reasonable price. With the MacBook, Apple has corrected a handful of the iBook's shortcomings, hit a reasonable price point, and delivered a laptop that makes a great compromise between size and portability.
