Color Laser Printer 1320c price range: $179.00 - $249.95

The good: Inexpensive; fast color prints; great text print quality; single-sheet manual feed slot.
The bad: Slow black prints; black prints need to be darker; color graphics printing could use some improvement; memory and paper input are not expandable; no auto-duplexer.
The bottom line: The Dell 1320c is a decent choice for a small office or work group, but a little more cash will net you a faster printer with better print quality.
The Dell 1320c is a low-cost, color laser printer geared for small businesses or work groups. The $300 USB-only printer is slower than its competition with black prints but picks up the slack on color prints. Though not without its faults, the print quality is sufficient for most business uses. If you print a ton of black text documents, you're better off with the $400 Lexmark C500n, and if you want a better balance of print speeds between color and black, try the $400 Oki C3400n. The Oki's print quality is a bit better than the Dell's, too.
Design
The Dell 1320c's design is basic and straightforward, befitting its small-office role. The dark gray printer sits 15.6 inches wide, 16.6 inches deep, and 14.8 inches tall, and weighs a bit less than 40 pounds. The control panel is limited to two buttons (cancel and continue) and a graphic representation of the printer with LEDs that light up to indicate where a problem is occurring. For example, the paper tray area icon lights up when the tray is open, and the four toner icons light up if toner is running low--useful since the printer lacks a text LCD.
The main paper tray holds 250 sheets of regular paper, and a single-sheet manual feed slot resides on the front of the paper tray. The input capacity is not expandable on this model. The top-mounted output bin holds up to 150 sheets.
The four toner cartridges are hidden behind a panel on the right side of the printer. The cartridges for this unit are small and lightweight. Pulling them out, however, causes toner to dust your desktop--you've been forewarned. Each cartridge comes in two capacities: 1,000 prints and 2,000 prints. The small black costs $45, and the small color cartridges cost $59 each. The larger versions of each cost $60 and $79, respectively. Using the larger cartridges for best value, we calculate that a black-only print costs about 3 cents and a full color page costs about 15 cents. Both costs are reasonable, though slightly higher than those for the Oki C5500n. The monthly duty cycle is 35,000 prints.
Features
The Dell 1320c has the basic features you'd expect from a basic color laser printer. The base model connects via USB only, but you can add on a network adapter for $50. It ships with a 333MHz processor and 64MB of nonexpandable memory. There's no duplexer unit available for the 1320c, but the printer's driver will assist you with a manual duplex print job. Likewise, the driver can help you shrink or enlarge a print, create a poster or booklet print, and make N-up prints.
Performance
Compared to its similarly priced competition, the Dell 1320c is a bit slow with black prints, but faster with color. It printed black text at a rate of 12.11ppm, slower than the Samsung CLP-300N, the Oki C3400n, and the Lexmark C500n. With black graphics, it fell well behind both the Lexmark and the Oki, but was much faster than the Samsung. The Dell was the fastest of the bunch at color prints, just edging out the Oki and was the second fastest at color graphics, falling behind the Oki.

The Dell's print quality was more than serviceable for a small office or work group. The black text print showed excellent quality, though the text leaned more toward dark gray than a true black. The color text could be improved with better color blending. The black graphics print looked faded (again, more dark gray than black), and the photo elements need to be sharpened up. The color graphics print showed the most problems. We saw banding in color and grayscale gradients, and the colors were too ruddy while the blacks weren't dark enough. We also noticed that the Dell had problems handling barcode patterns. On the other hand, the photo elements showed good detail, and color blocks were nicely saturated. Overall, the Dell 1320c's print quality is good enough for normal office use, but it's not the best choice if you value speedy black prints.

Service and support
Dell backs the 1320c with a standard one-year warranty, though you can pay to extend the warranty to up to five years. Dell provides 24-7, toll-free phone support. The company's Web site provides drivers and downloads, FAQs, manuals, as well as user forums.

Don't Buy Until You Check Out the Cost of Toner

Pros: Small Footprint. Easy Setup. Decent Price.
Cons: Toner carts are way expensive and don't last as advertised.

Summary: Multiple calls to Dell has (gee...big surprise!!) yielded no help. Toner carts that are rated for 2000 copies are running out around 300-400. They are $82 each and you buy the individual colors. The low price doesn't seem to be worth it. Will put this sucker on Craigs List soon. Not a Bargain!!!

Great Color Laser for the Price
by dragonfire_777 on November 19, 2009
Pros: Quick printing, good color quality, sharp images, easy to change toners, good adjustment tools
Cons: Print driver occasionally hangs on first print, one paper tray instead of 8.5x11 and 8.5x14 (minor issue)
Summary: This printer serves all the color printing for my small business and my personal use. Fast printing for it's size. Many reviewers complain about toner costs. Dell's toners ...
Summary: This printer serves all the color printing for my small business and my personal use. Fast printing for it's size. Many reviewers complain about toner costs. Dell's toners are expensive. I have found compatibles for less than $30 each. If you aren't printing a lot of full coverage sheets the toner life is acceptable. Toner change out is quick and simple. Planning to buy a second one for my wife who prints a lot of photos. Overall, this printer delivers what it's advertised to do. Very satisfied.

Do not buy a Dell 1320c printer. Poor quality results.
by philsills on September 24, 2009
Pros: Once you have reached Dell printer service in Manila, they will do their level best to transfer you here and there until you hang up in frustration. They are so good at hide-and-seek, after two or three days on hold, you forget why you called them
Cons: Where to begin, toner cost more than printer, poor color copies, frequent paper jams, non-existant service, crinkles envelopes, all in all, Dell is giving away 1320c with hopes you'll buy toner. A typical razor blade marketing scenario.
Summary: Dell can solve this problem by standing behind their products, unfortunately, they have outsouced their problems to a company in Manila whose mantra is to make the complaints go away. ...

Piece of Junk
by bluemoojie on July 29, 2009
Pros: If you are printing a letter or black and white typed report then this printer is fine as long as you aren't printing more than a few at a time.
Cons: It will not print files of any size or graphics consistently. Dells solution is to replace the printer. And replace the printer. And replace the printer.
Summary: If you do any work with graphics at all, this printer is a piece of junk. An error message will tell you to shut the printer on and off to ...
Summary: If you do any work with graphics at all, this printer is a piece of junk. An error message will tell you to shut the printer on and off to clear it. If the error is repeated, and it always is, then you are supposed to call Technical Support. When you give technical support the error number they will tell you the solution to the problem is to replace the printer. And around and around you go. This is the second printer now that I've been told to replace. Give me a break! It's a BAD product!

Not the best purchase

Pros: Dell brand
Cons: Wrinkles envelopes, slow to respond, won't accept envelopes in the bypass until you "wake it up".
Summary: Our purchasing deparmtent bought this printer to replace an HP printer - I wonder if they read any of the reviews?

Perfect mix of Quality & Price
by charris77 on January 10, 2009
Pros: Well built, AMAZING print quality (better than the ink printer it replaced). Knock off toner on Ebay makes this printer very affordable. Network adapter included in mine. Aesthetically, it has very clean lines and a simple shape, nice looking!
Cons: This is really a small business network printer at heart, so if you are in the market to print large volumes of documents cheaply then be aware that this printer is not a little tinny sub-compact cheapo, it's larger than most personal printers.

Summary: Installation was a breeze right out of the box with the step by step video on setting it up right out of the box. I personally purchased non-dell ink from Ebay (don't buy recertified, refilled, or refurbished but buy new generic to be safer), and the 4 toner cartridges were $100 with shipping, making this very affordable per page. Print quality was better than my ink printer (hp all in one).
Network setup was a breeze, took me maybe 15-20 minutes to install it on 2 laptops and a desktop (vista 64 bit & XP pro). No problems so far, and it's pretty quiet and the speed is very nice. At the time I bought this, dell just shrunk the design down in size, but this new deisgn only does 4ppm color instead of 12. I bought the old one for the price of dell's new one from a 3rd party, so be sure to get the one you want. -
DOA after DOA after DOA
by beefydog on December 29, 2008
Pros: In my 25 years of IT, I've never had this much problem with a printer. No pros here!
Cons: After receiving 3 (yes three!) of these printers arriving all DOA (dead on arrival), I have nothing good to say. Shotty workmanship and the most poorly engineered printer to date as far as I can tell.
Summary: Don't waste your money. Dell, quite clearly, no longer cares about their customers nor quality control. I've never had this much trouble with a printer in my 25 ...
Summary: Don't waste your money. Dell, quite clearly, no longer cares about their customers nor quality control. I've never had this much trouble with a printer in my 25 years of IT experience. The factory clearly does not have any quality control as they continue to send garbage out. Can't say anything about print quality as I've never received a functioning unit. I am sincerely disappointed and will never buy another Dell product again.!

So bad they wouldn't take it back!
by fashionate on November 19, 2008
Pros: If you can keep it working and afford the ink, the time fudging with it, leaking powder, streaks wasting your precious toner and ruining your documents.. when it works, it's OK, maybe even pretty good but I've had nothing but problems from the start.
Cons: I bought mine from Dell for $299, thinking "what a deal!" Yeah, well, I also bought the additional supposed 2,000 page toner set a whopping $279! Only printed 450 high quality pages, tried to send back - they said no, after 21 days. ***? Dell sux btw
Summary: Bait and switched again - I was so happy to get an english speaking tech who immediately sent me a replacment of the printer, so I returned the original. Now ...

Now the refurbished replacement is tempermental... sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't. Not pleased with this purchase... still trying to make the best of it. Not happy.

Totally Happy~!by ellehuny on October 22, 2008
Pros: It works great, no problems at all! Prints really nice color pictures, and best of all the ink isn't too expensive... for oem at least... Anyway I am very satisfied with this and the price was excellent too... I paid about 100bucks for it...
Cons: networking is a little slow, but no big deal... I am going to get a wireless print server so that should take care of the slow network problems.
Summary: Excellent printer for the price. Easy setup, excellent prints both in color and monochrome. It has a very small footprint, so it doesn't take up a lot of space. ...
