Summary: nice inexpensive..but HP has made it that way on purpose......the printer has imbedded chips in it that says when to replace the ink. even if you only use black, when it goes the chips say all the ink is done. you have no choice but to replace all 4 inks, and its at least every 3 months if not sooner...and at 85 bucks a pop it adds up..HP has done a number on this one....stay away...or shell out 400 bucks every 3 months for ink....HP should be arrested for stealing.....never again.

This printer is one of the best printers for home and home-office needs with good quality print.

Pros: 1 pass tech., quiet, excellent text quality, acceptable graphics and photos, looks good (compact design and light), reliability from HP, a lot of kind of paper for printing, easy to use.
Cons: Print a little bit slow, there is not the documentation in the package (only electronic version).

1 pass tech., quiet, excellent text quality, acceptable graphics and photos, looks good (compact design and light), reliability from HP, a lot of kind of paper for printing, easy to use, comfortable manual feed, low power consumption (16 Watt in standby and 190 Watt in work mode).
NEGATIVE:
Print a little bit slow, there is not the documentation in the package (only electronic version), only one real tray but it’s very good and suitable for many purposes, no support PostScript 3. Impassable to increase memory and doesn’t have an auto-duplex. I could not find a laser photo paper in Canadian stories.
HARD CHOICE:
In the first place I want to say thanks so much every one who gives yours opinions because that so useful especially for whom who wants to buy something but has a doubt and also thank CNET for that they are.
I could not decide a whole month which printer I want to buy under $1000. I researched CNET a lot of times I read each opinion again and again but every time I got headache more and more. I did not have a color laser printer before and I could not know what it is good and what it isn’t good. I had the next purposes: to buy a color laser printer for home-office using, printing the brochures, fliers and business documents and of course like everyone I wanted to buy more for less, excellent text, graphics and photo quality printing for the reasonable cost. I picked out three models like main candidates for purchasing: Dell 3100cn, Lexmark 510n and Konica-Minolta 2430dl. Lexmark I removed from my list because it very noisy and it curls a paper (It’s conclusion based at reviews and user’s opinions only), I don’t know why but Konica-Minolta didn’t inspire inside my heart and it has hi power consumption – up to 600 Watt and higher in work mode. Dell is bulky and heavy (70 lbs). And also all printers have 4-pass print mode. About HP LaserJet 2600n I read but didn’t want to think about it because this print has low CNET rating – 5.8 from 10.
As I sad above I was choosing a printer a long time and at the end of the day I became tired. I decided to give up from hi quality printing Dell 3100n and to buy HP 2600n. I felt myself very depressed because I didn’t find that I wanted and I will buy printer with not enough print quality for my purposes but I was mistaken!
O, my God. It’s happened. I bought HP 2600n and drive home as fast as possible I cannot wait any more I wanna see print quality this printer. I flied inside home with 16 kg. box on my hands and move directly to basement. In during 15 minutes I unpacked printer, installed drivers, removed protection tapes from cartridges and print first demo page – O my God! It was enough for me I won, for less I got more. I cannot say you that this printer to print excellent but I can absolutely say you that HP says truth about this model: This printer is excellent for entry level purposes and has excellent performance for this price.
In my opinion this printer is one of the best printers for home and home-office needs with good quality print which acceptable for many purposes but this printer it isn’t enough for corporate using because it prints not speedily. I won’t write about quality print because the best way will be if you yourself look at example pages and do own conclusions.

Summary: Initially I had a heap of trouble connecting via USB. it simply wouln't work. loading the driver wouldn't happen. I overcame this by connecting to the network port. The USB still doesn't work.
I ended up going thru the HP website to get some assistance. i found the site often confusing, and for no apparent reason, many of the menus constantly linked back to original help menus 5 screens ago. This was extremely frustrating.
I also tried the HP 'Active Chat'. I discovered it is zone, user type and product category dependant, as to times of available service. When i finally worked out what i needed to say in the options boxes to get some support, i finally got thru. When i did the enthusiastic operator was unable to help. she pointed me in the direction of drivers and the self help website etc. thanked me for my call... 'is there anything else...' all the things to appear to be doing a good job were there... except for the good job.
However, having said all this, It is good to use though. It's got the paperdraw, led screen, multimedia bypass slot, and ethernet connector that the 2550 doesn't have, and a cooler design. It is great to get colour laser with these spex at this price.
The software is intuitive, & i love the onsceen diagnostics. the straight thru paper path minimises jams, and assists simple removal of jams when they occur. It’s all very cool.
Everyone's going on about the slow speed. i dont have a problem with it. For the sort of printing it is designed to do, say one of graphics jobs, the main thing is 1st copy out time. Here it is competitive.
My machine came also with an inhouse marketing kit.Updated

Don't be confused by mixed reviews! Read this...

Summary: I normally don't write reviews, but when I went looking for a printer, I hit the user reviews at all the sites. With this HP 2600n, half the reviews said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, the other half said it was the worst garbage out there. What to do?
The in-store demos looked good, so with much trepidation, I decided to try it out. So far, I am very pleased with this printer. Most reviewers don't tell you what their experience / expectations are, so its hard to judge the usefullness of their opinions.
I am self-employed, and my wife home schools our children. We have a moderate output of several hundred pages a month, with brochures, forms, business cards, etc. on a Mac and three PC's.
Most reviewers that hated this printer seem to be high volume business users or used to high-quality color output from high-end machines. This printer is no HP3700. If you have high usage and expectations, you should not be looking at a $399 printer in the first place. Buy a two or three thousand dollar one and be happy.
Here are common gripes you will read and my thoughts on them:
Costly Expendables:
I had a Samsung CLP500 before this, but the cost of the waste toner bottle, not to mention you couldn't print without one, turned out to be a huge drawback. The 2600n only has the toner cartridges to replace-NO waste toner bottles, drums or imagers to replace. The toner is available at local stores and doesn't have to be special ordered. No stores carry waste toner bottles in stock and this is a huge drawback for some printers. Check the printer you plan to buy to see if it has one. (you'll have to factor in shipping costs and delays)
Too Slow:
If you have an office network where people routinely print large documents, this will be a drawback as the 2600n is slow...relatively speaking. Its first out page from idle is very fast compared to the Samsung and other printers. Since we mostly print one or two pages, this is a plus speed-wise and should be considered. If you want to print out a 50 page manual, it will take some time... again depends on your usage. For the average home, it's faster. For a business with lots of large documents, it's slower.
Output Quality:
No laser printer is good for photographs, period. What really matters is brochures, one-ups, etc. This printer prints excellent quality graphics and brochure photos. Some say it's "grainy." I found it actually sharper and less grainy then the Samsung. The graphics look great. I did notice [slight] color fringing and ghosting on colored letters if I used cardstock, but not on regular paper. The Samsung CLP500 did not do this. It's slight and some adjusting may have to be done.
No control:
If you access the printer from your web browser [print a network config report, find its IP address and type that in to your web browser], it has a ton of settings. More than I thought were possible in a printer. I haven't played with it, but I'm sure you could tweak a lot.
To sum up:
All in all, I think this printer is excellent for the home and small business user. Large volume users should look elsewhere.
I was able to set-up and network the printer on the Mac (with BonJour), and PC's easily. I paid $299 at Sam's Club, so the printer is inexpensive. Print quality is excellent, despite what others say (unless they had a lemon, or bad toner cartridges). Speed on first out print from idle is great... slow for multi-page B&W.
I would recomend this printer!5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I was quite taken back by the quick warm up speed of the 2600n. I was a bit skeptical of this printer especially because of the CNET rating, but saw positive user feedback, and I'm so glad I went through with the purchase.
This color does great text print, pretty good graphics. I use it for my home office to print out color proofs of web and print work for clients and I am extremely happy with it. My home office is set up with 2 Power Mac PC's and 1 regular PC - I set this printer up so all computers can use it via the ethernet connection - setup time for this printer was a breeze. All the default settings were set to automatic, and so it was quickly found on my home network.
The size is quite large, but very practical, and has a modern shape. Overall I give it a 9/10. I'd recommend this printer to anyone from home office to small office who prints semi often/often.
Hope this helps!
Cheers.Updated
It's been about a month or more since I've gotten the printer and all is true to what I previously mentioned. There is however one major exciting discovery I made, which I mentioned the printer being without previously. This is the single sheet feeder. The printer does have one after all! Not only that - it's a very sophisticated one. For example when I'm printing single envelopes, I feed the envelope through a feeder at the bottom, the printer then grabs it and positions it - and you press print. Pretty snazzy if you ask me.
Just wanted to share with everybody... hope it helps.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cheap and Cheerful

Summary: I was in a bit of a quandry -- I needed a network colour laser printer quickly and the CNET editors & readers seemed to disagree on their opinions of this printer.
The problem is that, in the UK, it can be difficult to get what you want quickly and at a sensible price. I really wanted the Dell 3100cn but Dell business sales didn't even return my 'phone calls (despite me being a long-standing customer).
After spending a frantic day shopping around (and reading CNET), I bought the HP -- and, so far, I'm very happy.
I've had a lot of experience with printers over the years, including HP, and you get a feel for these things. Right out of the box, the printer seemed well built. Not as bombproof as my old workhorse LaserJet 5 maybe, but not as fragile as the flimsy but reliable LaserJet 1200 my kids use.
Unpacking was a breeze, although at 23kg (50 pounds) this printer is no lightweight -- ugh! The poster-sized set-up sheet has lots of pictures and minimal text to guide you.
Per the norm nowadays you don't get a printed manual -- documentation comes on the CD in both CHM and PDF formats.
Upon initial power-up the 2600n spit out a blank sheet of paper and then went through 2-3 minute calibration.
Although the printer comes with a USB 2.0 interface, I used the built-in Ethernet networking capability to connect to my Windows Server 2003 SoHo network.
The printer instantly picked up a DHCP address from my Draytek ADSL firewall/router. I opened a Firefox browser window and was immediately able to connect to the printer's built-in web server interface.
The web GUI has 3 tabs (info, settings, networking), each selecting a page with more menu options. Everything is easy and intuitive.
For example, setting a fixed IP address for my network took just a couple of clicks -- the printer automatically reset itself (no power cycling necessary) and within a few seconds I was able to reconnect on its new fixed address.
You Mac lovers will be happy to know that the printer supports mDNS so that you can easily assign a user-friendly network name.
Other browser-based controls are extensive with myriad options to control paper type, print handling & quality, job control, graphics status of toner cartridge use and much more. However, there are a few options, toner-out over-ride, for example, that must be set using the front-panel.
Now, print quality and speed...
Once powered-on, the printer warms up almost instantly. It's pretty quiet when printing (rated at 52dba) and reverts automatically to a completely silent standby mode when finishing printing. It draws under 20 watts in standby so I plan to only power it off at nights and on weekends.
The built-in HP test page looked very good, but you would expect that, wouldn't you?
More extensive and punishing tests -- test images downloaded from Digital Dog for example, revealed very pleasing output.
Black text is clear and sharp down to very small font sizes. Text density is good without being overly heavy or blotchy.
For an inexpensive printer, colour output is very pleasing indeed. Images are nicely saturated without being garish or heavy.
Handling of gradients is very good too -- very smooth in natural scenes & human faces for example, but slightly noticeable in complex computer-generated graphics with graduated tints.
The printer manages greyscales well except at the very dark end. I.e, anything above about 95% black, is all-black, if you see what I mean.
I've noticed some occasional very slight banding on full-page images, but this seems to have improved as I've run more pages through the printer -- perhaps the toners settling down?
The finished output on good quality (not gloss) 90gsm paper has a very slightly waxy texture and is very slightly glossy rather than flat. The toner does not smear, even if you run a wet finger across the paper.
Colour printing speed is not bad. Even the very complex Digital Dog colour test images rendered in under a minute. More normal colour pages get spit out within a few seconds and throughput seemed to be about 6-7 pages per minute. Strangly, black text-only output wasn't much quicker.
So, what do we have here?
If you are looking for a photo-quality printer, buy something purpose built for that task (and it will be cheaper). If you're expecting high quality pre-proof output again, go somewhere else.
If, however, you are a home user or small business that wants to do decent quality standard color printing of reports, brochures and flyers, you will be very happy.
With a little experimentation and judicious use of spot color, graphics, and images, you'll be able to produce something nearly equal to your local print store, when you want, and for less money.
Speed and throughput might annoy you if you have a busy workgroup or want to print high volumes -- but that's not what this printer was designed for. Do what I do and print the bulk of your mono-output on a workhorse laser and use the 2600n for where it's needed.
My only niggling worry is reliability. If, however, the Colour LaserJet 2600n lives up to the performance of my other HP printers, I'll be a happy camper indeed.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Ink/Toner RIP OFF

Summary: If you don’t print primarily COLOR documents, DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. I purchased the HP Color Laserjet 2600n as an alternative to cheap inkjet printers which use way too much ink. I knew the cartridges were expensive ($85.00 per) but with the yield of each cartridge I thought it was worth it. I also made the assumption that because I used the printer primarily for black ink documents that my color cartridges would last a lot longer than my black cartridge…WRONG. I called HP Technical support for a minor issue. I spoke with Tania. Tania told me that this is primarily a color printer, therefore, when you print a document which only uses black ink, the printer assumes you’re also using the color cartridges, so it is using up the color cartridges at the same rate. There’s only one catch, when the printer tells you that you have to replace the color cartridges, most likely there is still a LOT of toner left in the cartridge. When I became incredulous, she laughed at me. Eventually I was transferred to Gali, in Customer Care. I was also on the phone at the same time with another woman but they wouldn’t give me her name. They confirmed MANY TIMES exactly what Tania told me. So many times during my conversation I said “I just have such a hard time believing that I will be forced to replace FULL CARTRIDGES!” and every time there reply was something to the effect of, I understand Ma’am, but there’s nothing we can do, the machine is not defective. If I were you I WOULD NOT BUY THIS PRINTER.
Now, since this experience, i've learned the following; (haven't tried yet, other's have and said it works)
Here is how to solve problem;
Cartridge Out Override can only be enabled from the printer's control panel menu.
1. From the main menu, press (RIGHT ARROW) to System Setup and press (SELECT).
2. Press (RIGHT ARROW)to Print Quality and press (SELECT).
3. Press (RIGHT ARROW) to Replace supplies and press (SELECT).
4. Press (RIGHT ARROW) to Override Out and press (SELECT).
5. Press (SELECT).
If Stop at out is selected, the printer will stop printing when a cartridge reaches the recommended replacement point. If Override out is selected, the printer will continue printing when a cartridge reaches the recommended replacement point. The factory default setting is Stop at out.
I have to say, I got this remedy on this website. I spent over an hour on the phone with HP and they did not give me this solution. They did give me an override solution that they told me would stop working after 2 weeks. (not sure what that was all about)2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

STOP! No printing for you!

The printer starts ...Summary: I purchased this printer about 1 year ago for our small business. We use it for day to day printing as well as for proposals and literature.
The printer starts up much faster than the previous model we had so we are not waiting for ever for 1 page to come out. The text quality is very good and images are decent. Using higher quality paper really helps.
After a couple of months of using the machine we had to replace the black toner, expected. Then shortly there after one of the colors needed to be replaced so I replaced it. We could not print anything until I replaced it so off to the store. Immediately after replacing it another error came up saying that another cartridge needed to be replaced. so another trip to the store to replace it. Then, you guessed it, replaced that one and a third message came up to replace the last cartridge.
This printer does NOT give you any kind of advanced warning that the cartridges are running low, just that it is out. Then you CANNOT print until it has been replaced. This stops a good part of my productivity at work until I can get out to buy another one. If it wasn't for the fact that the cartridges cost around $300 to replace all of them I would keep all of them on hand.
There is software that allows you PC to connect to the printer to manually check the levels. But it does not work it cannot find the printer.
In addition when I contacted their on-line support to see if there was anything that could be done I was told that my warranty had expired and if I wanted my question answered I would have to pay $25. Hence, the review.
In summary, it is not worth buying this printer. There has to be a printer our there that does everything this one does and more.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.
