Summary: I'm a graduate student and wanted a printer that would produce high-quality black white material reasonably quickly. I also wanted double-sided printing. I didn't want to pay a lot for features I didn't need that much (high speed, color). I've been extremely impressed with this machine. I've had no problems with software or hardware (one paper jam in six months) and was pleasantly surprised that it makes no sound when not engaged, ie you can't tell it's on except for the light unless it's printing.
My only criticism is that the software seems a little under-designed. This is partly aesthetics (very low-tech message box) but also the messages you get when you print on both sides seem somehow poorly-timed (why two messages, anyway?), and canceling a print job usually doesn't work (not sure how much this is Windows' fault).
I can't make detailed comparisons with other current models (this is why I didn't give it a 10) but am very happy with this product and expect that you will be too.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

125 pages printed at 15 ppm

Summary: Some people have had problems with overheating after 40 pages, but I just printed out 5 copies of a 125 page thesis, and I timed the last run: 125 pages in 14.8 pages per minute. I didn't notice any slow-down. (I did let it cool down between copies)
I compared 1 of the graphics pages to a higher end laser printer that our lab has; my colleagues couldn't tell which one was which.
Great printer, great price!3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

None better in this price range.
Pros: Good reliable printing. A bit more expensive than the cheapest laser options but worth the extra $50-75 for quality and reliability. I puschased and returned less expensive models from other manufactureres. Get this and don't waste your time like I did.

Good performance but paper curling problem serious.

Summary: The curling problem so severe, that the printer is incapeable of printing professional looking documents. If I place printed sheets under a heavy book while they are still warm, it helps. But, because of the curls, I can only use this as a draft printer.

Get the best, don't waste any more time on the rest. blows samsung out of the water

Pros: Fast and capable printer. No brainer to set up. None better for the money
Cons: 150 sheet paper tray, 8mb memory. Minor issues though.

Summary: My Samsung 6100 laser was acting like it was ready to give up the ghost, so started the tedious but necessary process of researching printers. Settled on the HP 1012 after comparing several highly rated printers on major web sites. I was Not disapointed with my choice. While the cost per page is greater then some of the other printers, I find it insignificant. I want a printer that works when I need it, and I know from years of experience the HP printers are hard to beat for reliability. The printer this one replaced was not the most reliable printer, toner was hard to find and expensive and the support web site was difficult to navigate. The HP was a no brainer to unpack and install, HP web site is easy to navigate. This is a well designed printer with good paper handling at a reasonable price. The print speed is so fast - even the first page comes out fast - and reasonably quiet I'm looking forward to the next print job! An excellent choice for the home office or office workstation. Blows the doors off the printer it replaced. I don't know why the paper capacity is 150 instead of the typical 250 sheets, but this is not a major issue. The toner is a bit on the expensive side, but time is money and I don't think I'll be spending much if any time fiddling with this printer. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. Nice job HP!

Best Christmas Gift Ever
Pros: A gift to myself, I bought this on Staples price match - ended up being $142 (after another company put it on sale) and a $20 gift card for a phenomenal personal laser printer. I had purchased a Minolta PagePro a month earlier, and had to take it back du
Cons: The toner cartridges do run ~$70, there are no remanufactured ones, and they are fairly small and go around 3,000 - 7,000 pages based upon your printing use and preferences. The paper loader tray holds fewer than 200 pages of paper.

Prints clean, fast, convenient, good value
Pros: Automatic selection of manual tray makes it super easy to print double -sided, or reuse old paper for temp work.

Great for multiple tax form preparation
by emccoy223 on September 18, 2008
Pros: Quiet, compact
Cons: Why is the on-off button way down in the back?
Summary: I am happy w/product. I can print multiple copies of tax returns rather than having to use copy machine.
