Replacement for Laserjet 4000
by MikeA99 on April 15, 2009
Pros: Easy set up, no conflicts with programs, other printers, and older software (I am using XP pro), very fast compared to Laserjet 4000. Convenient, logical control panel
Cons: Doesn't seem as robustly built as the Laserjet 4000. Hope it lasts. Uses more watts (800), hope I don't blow the fuse! Paper tray is a little more awkward to put the paper in than the Laserjet 4000, and the paper tray is somewhat flimsy and flexible.

Summary: This unit ships with the power switch in the "on" position. Make sure you turn it off before you plug it in, or risk damaging the unit. It also doesn't come with a USB 2 cable, so pick one up before you expect to set it up. The larger toner cartridge (CC364X, i.e. 64x) does NOT fit in the 4014, only the 64A fits. I do tax returns, about 40,000 pages per year, most of it February, March and April. My highest monthly volume probably exceeds 15,000, but for the price of $685, I figured I would give it a try (maximum monthly volume is supposed to be 12,000). My Laserjet 4000 was on its 2nd or 3rd fuser, and it was starting to act up after this past tax season. I replaced all the rollers in the 4000 again, but it has seen almost 600,000 pages in 12 years. The 64A toner cartridges for the 4014n are a little more expensive than the 27x for the 4000 (both about 10,000 pages), but if you shop around on the internet, you can find them reasonable. The 4015 and 4515 offer slightly higher speed, higher monthly page count, and can use the 64X cartridge but cost substantially more money. They didn't seem worth it to me. The 4015 costs almost twice the price of the 4014, and the 4515 is almost 3 times the price. I found the cheapest price as of April 2008 at CTIStore.com, and the cheapest toner at GoComputerSupplies.com.
So far I am pleased, but I can't tell how long it will last. It only comes with a one year warranty (so did the 4000).1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Over price for what it has to offer
by lattedude92 on June 9, 2010
Pros: Fast and that is the only Pro for a printer in this price range
Cons: Extremely expensive for a printer of this caliber without duplexing as standard. You have to spend 275 for a piece of plastic just to duplex not to mentioned networking.. POOR CONSTRUCTION.

Summary: As stated under Cons way overprice printer for what you get. Gone are the days of solid, effecient, reliable, and effective motor, fuser and quality HP PRODUCTS. Now a days they just put them together with less sturdy reliable quality HP products were used to 10 years ago. I have had many HP printers and have seen the inside quality designed and reliable parts gone down.: WHAT'S INSIDE THE PRINTER IS CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT ON A LASER JET PRINTER AT THIS PRICE RANGE. I've resorted to Lexmark home consumer Laser jet printers and I've never had lexmark consumer products that are not good. I reallize printers are made for the heavy user, Businesses, or the Home user for everyday printing, But this particular printer is targeted for the Business user but made like the cheaper home consumer grade, my experience with this printer. May biggest complaint it the print quality on this high end monochome printer, the lack luster construction and clearly the overprice for this high end printer. Go Back To The Basics HP, where you're calculators, printers and many other products were solid quality made.
