Cheap to buy, expensive to run.
by wilfridofivanhoe on April 19, 2011
Pros: Installed OK with XP. We've had no problems with printing.
Cons: Doesn't work with Win2K. After 6 weeks of moderate use we've spent more on toner than the printer cost! Obviously designed to sell more cartridges. We've had it for about 6 weeks but will replace it when we've used the cartridges we've bought.
Summary: Uses toner cartridges too quickly.

Simple, easy to install, and hey, it's wireless.
by mmparke on August 5, 2010
Pros: Installed in minutes on both PC and Mac. So nice to have less wires and print from both operating systems.
Cons: Eh, so it costs a bit more per sheet printed, but there are places online that sell the cartridges cheaper than in-store prices. So, I think it's great. Especially for a home office or a student.

PC - put install cd in your machine and follow the prompts. You have to connect the usb for initial install, but during the cd install, you will be prompted to remove the cable. Then, no more cables. Took 3 minutes. Hold down the "x" button on the printer for 5 seconds after finishing the install and print the "settings" page. You'll use this to setup for on a Mac (below - you need the IP address it prints on the page).
Mac - first, go to the hp website and download and install the Mac OS X driver (the .dmg file). There is no icon associated - so click on the file name and run the driver install once it's done downloading. When prompted about the "allow network", say "ok". Then, go to your system preferences. Click on "Print and Fax". Click on the "+" sign below the "Printers" list to add a printer. In the pop-up window, click on the "IP" icon. Leave the "Protocol" to "Line Printer Daemon - LPD". In the "Address" box - type the IP address that was on the printout from your new printer (the "settings" page). If you've done the driver install correctly, the HP driver will automatically pull up and all you do is click on the "Add" button. Of course, it goes without saying to make sure during all of this that you have your Airport enabled and are on the wireless network when adding the printer. Total time for Mac install: 5 minutes including the driver download. Done.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Toner hog!
by Goldfinch33 on May 8, 2010
Pros: People tend to be reluctant to buy refurbished printers that have no CD with drivers. By including them, HP has made it easier to remanufacture and recycle these printers.
Cons: Look at toner costs. At 5% coverage, it costs over 4 cents per page with this printer in HP's drive to sell toner faster, more expensively. Look at cost per page first then the printer cost. A good reman printer is faster, better, less than 1 cent.
Summary: Bottom line is that over the last 5 years HP has reduced price per printer but increased cost per page. Look at toner costs, not printer costs and demand more ...

No regrets - installation tip
by Count_zero on March 14, 2011
Pros: Print to it from laptops all over the house.
Fast first-page-out and good speed.
Works well with cheaper LD toner
Manual duplex a plus - saves paperCons: Initial setup was tricky BUT found out that my wirless phone was next to it on the desk. Moved the phone and it connected right up. Do not have possible interferring devices around it when installing. Also, give it a fixed IP address, not DHCP.
Summary: For the money, good. My manual duplexing stopped working from my desktop PC. Still works from the laptops. Cannot find out why. Have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times. ...
Summary: For the money, good. My manual duplexing stopped working from my desktop PC. Still works from the laptops. Cannot find out why. Have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times. Windows 7 Ult. Just stopped one day but I have a ton of stuff on this PC as well as an all-in-one on the net, so a lot of HP software on the PC. HP over-complicates their software and google finds many people having conflicts that require uninstalling ALL hp software and starting over.
I do really like this printer performance and versatility and wireless capability.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Easy installation, quiet, fast, wireless, no ink.
by mabasr1 on September 26, 2012
Pros: Good price, compact, installation into my network was a breeze. Love the fact that it's wireless. Can print from anywhere in range of network not just from inside the house. A ton more prints than my ink printer for about the same price.
Cons: Need longer USB cable. 6 foot would be better.
Summary: Bought the first printer from a fellow employee that was moving to France for $110.00. Setup was easy, added to my home network, with 2 other printers, no problem. ...

I like the the eprint function and the fact that it reverts to sleep mode until it is sent a print request. It's quiet not like my HP G85 that sounds like it's going to break, but still going strong by the way.
Bought another from Office Depot for $99.99. I will give update after some more use. -
Install awkward, did not work with Air Print.
by JDebes1 on December 1, 2011
Pros: * Wifi self-standing
* ePrint: you can send email print attachments, it has it's own email print address.
* Auto formats ePrint for you
* Initial Cost competitive
* Very low energy consumption
* Apple Air Print compatible
* HP live person supportCons: Setup awkward, poorly planned, missing critical information, & user guides written with improper non-English speaker grammar.
AirPrint did not work out-of-the-box.
Security flaw leaves this machine vulnerable to attack: see MSNBC news articleSummary: I found a very good initial price for the features of this printer. ($100) After many difficulties with with setup, this machine eventually was setup and worked very well for ...
Summary: I found a very good initial price for the features of this printer. ($100) After many difficulties with with setup, this machine eventually was setup and worked very well for me. It is easy and fun to use with ePrint and Air Print via iPone and iPad and other MAC devices, also works well with PC devices. I bought it because I wanted the Air Print feature, but i like the ePrint option also.
This printer was difficult to setup due to disorganized instruction sequence and out-of-date firmware. There was no indication of need to upgrade firmware in the box.
I had to call HP to resolve the lack of Air Print feature, however, they resolved the issue with a firmware upgrade. HP live person support was excellent and i had no waiting.
Some of the setup instructions used improper grammar (typical of a non-native language English speaker) I found this offensive.
I was also annoyed at the documentation references for problem solving using internet forums. When I buy a product, I don't want to hear anything about going to some blog for information of solving product setup quality problems.
I returned two other HP products due to poor setup, lack of out-of the-box Air Print operation and this makes me wonder about how much money HP loses, how inefficient they are due to the setup problems.
After setup, this machine appears to work very well. I really like the ePrint / email feature, it auto formats my iPhone printing for me, does not require PCL, PS to be sent. Air Print is a step / advance above PC world printing , I like Air Print as well and hope all printers come to support it.
November 29 2011, MSNBC had news on a security hole with this and some other HP laser printers, I hope that HP fixes this quickly. Please google MSNBC article on HP LaserJet security for more information.
Please note: most setup issues with this printer were due to out-of-date firmware. It is a good machine but if you buy one, expect that you should download the most recent upgrades to firmware.
HP is generally a good company, Im sure htat they will provide fixes for the security hole problem. -
Fast, simple, reliable.
by boki1978_CNET on November 5, 2011
Pros: Initial price is OK. It is easy to install and it works whenever you need it. WIFI functionality is great feature. If you have a router, your HP 1102w can be a network printer, always online, never depending on another PC.
Cons: Original HP toner is way too much expensive for the number of pages it can print, but if you can find toner that is 4-5 times cheaper then original, than this is not a problem.
Summary:
Fast, simple, reliable. If you are not printing that often, you should definitely buy it. First page comes out pretty fast.

Works great with my both my Mac and Windows machines
by estephan500 on March 8, 2011
Pros: MAC USERS:
(1) First use the normal manual to install the drivers from the CD-ROM
(2) then go to the instructions on the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c972ybZvZzo
(3) use your own wireless type (WPA?) & network name in that processCons: -- apparently the toner (and drum is combined) cartridge only lasts around 1500 pages, and I guess some competitors go up to 2500. but I haven't had the time to use the printer to see if that feels like a too-often replacement.

-- Printed resolution is extremely sharp, and greys / highlighted color areas are a smooth grey color, not some strange halftone dots
-- a previous reviewer complained that the printer turned itself off after five minutes. Actually it is going into a sleep mode, and it will wake itself totally the next time you print something! That is not something to complain about, it is totally cool.
-- I view this as a fast printer. pages come right on out. I guess it's "only" 18-19 PPM but that is fast.
-- there is a normal paper supply tray, and then there is a separate place to feel paper manually, in case you want to feed an envelope, or some kind of letterhead, or something.
-- external design is sharp and professional, I love that boxy "just a laser printer" look compared to the kooky appearance of all-in-ones and inkjets.
-- Cute design, fast printer. Feels professional. -
Nice little printer but wireless Mac setup a challenge
by mrvolvo371 on January 1, 2011
Pros: Inexpensive ($99.99), compact, portable, easy Mac setup with USB cable, prints fast, clear sharp text.
Cons: Comes with virtually no instructions on how to setup for wireless operation on a current Mac OS X. Once I figured it out, it does seem to work OK in wireless mode. (Solution explained below.)

Summary: I bought the H-P LaserJet P1102w printer as a replacement for an older, similar LaserJet for which Mac drivers are not available. I initially set it up by following the instructions for software/driver installation and connection to my MacBook (OS X 10.6.5) via the supplied USB cable. It worked fine in that mode. I then looked for the instructions on how to set up wireless (Mac) operation and there were NONE. After a couple hours of trial and error, I started searching the Net for help. The H-P web site was no help at all.
Then I stumbled upon a 2-1/3 minute video on YouTube entitled "Mac Wireless Setup - HP LaserJet P1102w", which provided just what I needed. It included detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to go about setting up the wireless system on my Mac. It's a little complex but without the video, I would never have figured it out on my own. (The H-P software must be installed first.) Once I got through making the changes in the right places and hit the wireless button on the printer, the LaserJet appeared as an available printer. The printer now works fine in wireless mode.
Only time will tell how well this little LaserJet will otherwise perform, but at least I have it working as advertised.
