The good: Fast; inexpensive; good-quality text; easy to set up and use; PC, Mac, and Linux compatible.
The bad: Small paper capacity; mediocre graphics quality; doesn't include USB cable.
The bottom line: The Samsung ML-2010 markedly improves on its predecessor but remains a personal laser rather than a serious business printer.
The Samsung ML-2010 is a small, attractive, and affordable monochrome laser printer suitable for a home office, a modest business, or a well-equipped dorm room. Like any low-cost laser printer, the ML-2010 has its limitations, such as a small 150-sheet-capacity main paper tray and only 8MB of memory, neither of which you can expand. That should be no problem if you do only occasional black-and-white document printing at your home or small shop. In fact, the ML-2010's clean, compact design and decent output make it desirable for anyone with limited office space, especially students. We prefer this Samsung to the entry-level Dell 1100. But larger or growing businesses will be better off with a hardy network printer or even a color laser printer.
The Samsung ML-2010 follows in the footsteps of its well-liked predecessor, the Samsung ML-1740. Prices have dropped on laser printers that aim to serve space-squeezed small offices, most notably the sub-$100 Dell 1100. But thanks to better paper handling and more RAM, we prefer the $150 Samsung ML-2010.
The Samsung ML-2010 has a bright white plastic front and soft gray sides and back. The footprint takes up a small 9 by 14 by 18 inches (HWD) with paper installed and the front cover open. The ML-2010 is so petite that the input paper tray, like the one on the Dell 1100, protrudes from the front cover. However, where Dell leaves the paper uncovered and the interior of the 1100 unprotected, Samsung provides a heavy-duty clear plastic cover to shield the paper from spills and help keep dust out of the printer's interior.
The ML-2010 holds 150 sheets of paper in its input tray, and the output bin on top holds 50 sheets, which is adequate. The control panel consists of a dime-size chrome button and two tiny LEDs. The button allows you to switch between automatic feed for plain paper and manual mode for hand-feeding envelopes into the one-page auxiliary slot. You can also choose toner-save mode for draft copies. The LEDs tell you when the printer is ready to print, when it's busy processing a job, or if printing is stalled because of a jam or an empty paper tray.
The ML-2010's combination toner cartridge and print drum sits deep inside the printer behind the front cover. It has a long handle, so it's easy to manage. The ML-2010 is simple to set up and install. All you need is a USB cable; the setup poster comes with the printer, and the drivers are self-loading.
Like the Dell 1100, the ML-2010 ships with a skimpy "starter" toner cartridge that you need to replace after 1,000 pages; the replacement costs $80, and Samsung says it will print about 3,000 pages. With the replacement cartridge, you'll pay around 2.7 cents per page--better than the Dell 1100's per-page cost of 3.3 cents but still not as low as you get with a bigger, pricier laser printer such as the 1.5-cents-per-page Dell 1700n.
The Samsung ML-2010's processor speed is 150MHz--a big upgrade from the ML-1740's wee 66MHz processor. The 8MB of RAM has not been upgraded since the ML-1740, nor can you expand it; however, it's still superior to the Dell 1100's meager 2MB.
Speed
The ML-2010 is fast for a printer in its price range and quicker than both the pricier HP LaserJet 1022 and the less expensive Dell 1100. In CNET Labs' speed tests, the ML-2010 printed text at 16.46 pages per minute (ppm) and graphics at 15.66ppm, easily beating the Dell 1100's speed of 12.48ppm for text and 10.68ppm for graphics.

Quality
The Samsung ML-2010's text, printed at the 600dpi default setting, had crisp, sharp edges and was legible even at 2-point size. However, unlike the dark, bold-looking output of the HP LaserJet 1022, the letters printed by the Samsung ML-2010 came out a tad lighter than black.
Unfortunately, graphics prints were mediocre, with horizontal banding apparent in the gradients and in photographs. When we reset the print driver from default to best quality, some of the banding disappeared and the gradients lost some of their paleness, but overall, the improvements were moot.

The Samsung ML-2010 comes with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty. Samsung provides toll-free telephone tech support weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m ET for the life of the printer. This seems like a wealth of support compared to what you get with the Dell 1100, which makes you pay for a warranty after a pitiful 90 days. Manuals, answers to FAQs, and drivers for the Samsung ML-2010 are also available on Samsung's Web site.

It's worth more than you paid for it!

Pros: Fast printing, small footprint, inexpensive initial cost
Cons: A bit noisy, higher lifetime cost, text printing may be "inexact"

The starter toner that comes with it is a little skimpy (1000 pages as opposed to the 4000 you can buy), and the lack of a supplied USB cable may be a pain for some people that don't have an extra one (and there is no parallel port connection). The toner saver feature claims 40% reduction but I would say it's close to 25-30% from my experience. Also, the duty cycle before certain maintainence is needed is shorter than many printers and this cost can be considerable (I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting a new one instead of doing the maintainence) Also, I have noticed that some fonts print in grey as opposed to black. Generally these are fonts I added (not pre-installed), or certain fancy ones that are thin - like script fonts. Also, the printer is noisy in compairson to many other laser (and ink for that matter) printers on the market. Finally, paper capacity is just plain poor.
And now for the good:
If you catch a sale on this printer, a mere $80 for a laser printer is a great buy. The cost per page is exceptional compared to the ink route, not to mention the toner saver feature actually does help extend some extra life if you're willing to trade that pitch black print for one a little lighter. If your like me, having the printer on your desk is no problem since the printer has a small footprint. Which is good as the printer is exceptionally fast so you don't have to wait...and wait. Last but not least, the easy installation allows for anyyone to be able to set everything up and get printing in no time.
**This printer should be used for general, personal use. Many people complain about the functionality for what I consider to be more business-oriented uses. Given the price of the unit and it's ability to complete most basic needs, it would be inane for a person to pass on this laser printer if they are a first-time buyer or only do light printing (<50 pages/week). Just my two cents**20 out of 20 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: How can you beat this printer for $50?! I've had mine for about 2 weeks, and I love it! It does exactly what I need it to do, which is print basic B&W documents.
It is louder than my old laser printer (which was a little startling at first). Also, if you print too many pages at once (25+), it may get a little hot and/or feed multiple sheets of paper.
Overall, a great printer!7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best B&W laser printer for the price!

Summary: Great printer, graphics are mediocre, text and fonts are clear and crisp. I bought this printer from NewEGG, and with a $50.00 rebate, this was a no brainer deal! I added a Zonet print server, and everyone in my house (6 computers) have access to this laser printer. Toner is expensive, but this seems to be standard with entry level laser printers.

Best mono laser printer in this price range
by A. Hubert on October 14, 2006
Pros: Very fast, excellent print quality (text), small desk space needed, toner save feature
Cons: Graphics quality medium (even at 1200 ppm), USB cable not supplied, power hungry when starting-up (see opinion)

But for under $150 cdn, I am more than pleased with it. It is fast! Only about 3 seconds per page and it was very easy to set-up, and print quality is far more supperior than inkjet.
Note: the first time I powered the printer, it tripped my power-bar's safety braker. So be aware that the unit requires plenty of juice to power-up! In the documentation they mention that it consumes about 400 watts when printing. But I suspect that the initial surge is greater than that. You'll see the lights flicker in the room when using it. On the plus side; there is a sleep mode features that you can adjust that powers-down the printer after a set time lapse.
I switched from inkjet printer to laser because I print only occasionally and the ink was drying-up and rendered the inkjet printer useless between uses. And the price of ink cartridges was so high ($40 for only a 400 pages life!)
Speaking of ink, the toner cartridge for this model is about $95 cdn for an estimated 3000 pages life (but at 5% fill).
Which is about the price range of many other models, too. The "toner save" feature is a good idea to save about 40% toner, and it has a very subtle effect on printing quality, just a tad lighter.
Overall great little laser printer for occasional use. Ideal for students with its small size, and price. Couldn't ask for more at this price...well maybe the USB cable could have been included.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Economical printer, but doesn't last as long as expected.

Summary: I bought this printer two years ago and it worked fairly well while I had it. I can't complain too much about its performance. It was fast, the quality was good enough for essays and assignments, and it fit nicely on my bookshelf (small). However, the paper feeder suddenly stopped working one day. I read some other reviews and apparently, I'm not the only one who experienced this problem. I don't know if this is a standard -- a two year lifespan. You can take the chance. I paid 130 bucks for it and it lasted 2 years, which isn't bad at all. However, I'm going to have to either pay to have it 'recycled' or toss it to the landfill...ideally, a printer should last at least 5 years.

Summary: I got this printer because I was printing so much text on my little inkjet that it was costing a fortune. This printer handles text great and prints amazingly fast for the price! It is nice and tiny-- just a bit taller and deeper then my inkjet, but no wider. My one complaint- the fan that cools it down is kinda loud (at least on mine) and it stays on for a few minutes after printing, so you have to deal with the noise... and when it starts to warm up, it makes my desk lamp flicker... which is kinda weird, but oh well. Over all, this is a super printer for the price and I would highly recommend it!

Summary: The ML-2010 is a bargain buy to be sure. And not in a bad way. This printer produces high quality text outputs and does so quickly by home office standards. I run a resume service and use this for printing on a high-quality cotton blend paper. The text is always super sharp and crisp, however, because the printer generates such extreme heat when printing it often "rolls" the paper as it is printing and is VERY susceptible to paper jams, which will then leave smears and streaks of toner on your next couple of pages. I have probably wasted 100 sheets of paper in two years a result of this inconvenience. However the quality for the price is hard to beat.

Summary: OK, its cheap. I picked it up at Staples today for $139, which includes tax, but I get a $90 rebate, leaving my final cost under $50. Its plug & play baby, didn't even need the driver disc, XP installed in quickly.
I've printed several sheets, adjusted the preferences to make it a little darker but I can't complain. It is really quick compared to my old Lexmark inkjet and the quality of print is good. How can you complain about a laser jet for under $50?1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Get more then your moneys worth. It pays to shop!

Summary: I was tired of Ink Jet and Bubble Jet printers. It gets old when you have to replace ink cartridges every time you turn around. One of the other reviews mentioned that the toner that came with the Samsung ML-2010 seemed to be limited. If this person were to read the box or research the product they would have known that the printer comes with a 1000 page Toner Cartridge and the regular refill promises about 3000 copies. Remember that Samsung promises you will get much more if you utilize the (Toner Saver Option.) It seems the normal price for a 3000 page refill is about 75.00 but with little effort I was able to find the same refill for approximately 40.00 on line. Lets not forget about EBay. I was able to purchase and have this printer shiped for 88.00 with a Buy It Now purchase from a Samsung dealer. When I registered on line Samsung gave me an instant 3 month extension on my warranty. A very good printer from a very good company.
