Summary: The monitor was purchased as an upgrade from a non HDMI viewsonic 24 inch set. I can say this unit is sharper and clearer although having so far only used DVI cables,,I feel there is room for some improvement in overall clarity and sharpness. Having said that, I believe the HDMI format will somewhat eliminate the forementioned, as already you can see details of clarity previously remiss on the viewsonic. The in built speakers are an atrocity! Stereo? the sound is festered towards the middle of the panel...even my viewsonic which had less wattage had a better spread and sound quality, and thats not saying much! Otherwise, if you use outboard speakers, go for this monitor.
Pros: Bright, lots of controls, LED backlights, and a 2Mp webcam.
Cons: Wobbly stand, no height adjustment, monitor sits too close to the desk.

Summary: This is a great monitor. I have two 27" ASUS monitors, and they both measure up. I was using a Samsung 23" monitor as my 2ndary monitor, but I decided I would like a 2nd 27". I was going to pick up the same monitor I already have but they are discontinued. The VK278Q was the same price as the VK278 (which has no webcam) so the choice was pretty obvious. I selected ASUS because I was so happy with the first one. Unfortunately, the stand that comes with this monitor sucks. It's very wobbly and doesn't sit high enough off the desk to align it with my 2nd ASUS monitor. I would have thought by now the viewing height of a monitor off of the surface of a desk would be standardized. I had to remove the stand and replace it with a VISA standard compatible stand I had kicking around. It was only for a 22" monitor so I was very lucky it fit and could support the weight of the 27" monitor. Stands like these are $60 new. Personally, I feel if the manufacturers are not going to follow a standard for height of the LCD panel from the desktop, then they should damn well make the stand height adjustable. Anyway, I have no other complaints about this monitor. The picture is great, the pixel response is 2ms, the backlights are LED, the brightness is great and the contrast looks fantastic. Out of 2 ASUS monitors I have gotten zero dead pixels (but then again I can say the same for 2 Samsungs and 3 Viewsonics and 4 Acers).
Whatever monitor you decide on, make sure you check the warranty. I've seen Acers, BenQs and AOC/Envisions with only 1 year warranties. These ASUS (and the Samsungs and Viewsonics) all have a 3 year warranty which is the standard. Those other companies are below standard.
For any manufacturers reading this (as if), my next widescreen TV I purchase is going to be based on the length of the warranty. I don't see why we should pay $350 for a monitor and get a 3 year warranty but pay $2000 for a TV and only get a 1 year warranty. Next time I narrow my TV selection down to 5 or so models, the one with the best warranty will be the one I purchase.
