Terrible image quality...
by dorkus77 on June 26, 2006

Summary: As the satisfied owner of a Dell 2005FPW, I had high hopes for the 1707FP. Based on the glowing reviews here, I figured it would offer comparable image quality in a smaller package for a lot less money. Based on what Dell sent me though, I have a hard time believing it is the same monitor people here are talking about.
The picture quality is abysmal. It is quite a bit worse than my mid-level 3 year old Samsung VGA-only 17" LCD, or even my nearly 5 year old cheapo KDS 15" LCD. Out of the box, there is a heavy bluish color cast that is difficult to fix with the monitor color controls or with software calibration. Even worse is the dynamic range, contrast and color banding... even with the DVI input, colors look rough and contrast is very uneven from light to dark. On VGA it only gets worse... my PowerBook hooked up via VGA looked fantastic on my 2005FPW, but on the 1707FP it is beyond bad. White-on-black terminal fonts are blotchy, anti-aliased text is jagged and the subtle gradients used throughout Mac OS X are so splotchy, you'd think you were looking at a really bad GIF screenshot.
Finally, the slightest change in viewing angle can bring about very large changes in color fidelity. Looking at the color calibration patterns in Mac OS X monitor calibration, even the slightest tip of the head will change contrast noticably. I do not have this problem with any other LCD I own, including the Dell 2005FPW which is a viewing angle champ.
In short, I really don't know how this monitor is gaining such great reviews. I did not even realize it was only a 6-bit panel until I did a little more research. If you're just looking for a basic DVI-input monitor and don't need good color fidelity, I suppose it's passable. But if you care even the slightest bit about image quality, steer way clear of this one. I'm most definitely returning mine.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I ordered this monitor through Costco.com on 1 Mar 06 for $239.00 which included shipping. What a deal! I received it in 2 days directly from Dell. This is a great LCD. The colors are vivid, the text is crisp. I am using an ATI 9600 AIW analog card. This LCD performs perfectly in analog mode! DVDs and television feed look great. The only adjustment that I need to make was to reduce the brightness to 60%. The other settings were fine. CNET says the stand is a bit wobbly. I disagree. It is very stable and extremely adjustable. I have seen few LCDs with adjustabe stands as good as what you find on a Dell. Since I can't test it in DVI mode, I will only rate it a 9 to be fair. If what I have seen in analog mode is any indication, then the DVI picture should be outstanding! At $239 this is a great buy.

Pros: Great Value and Build Quality. Stylish Look. Physical adjustments in every direction.
Cons: The height adjustment isn't very secure. It only looks it place at the very bottom position. I also have backlight bleeding at the top of bottom ridge of the screen.

Summary: I got bought this from SamsClub.Com; The order arrived in 4 days. Unlike the CNET review I feel that the stand is very secure. The backlight issues are not a big deal to me. I only notice them when the screen is totally black and all of the lights are out. My monitor came with no dead pixels. Overall this monitor is a great buy. Highly recommend.

Summary: Got this used very cheap. I use it as a 2nd monitor connected to my Compaq 2195us in dual monitor mode. It's great to have the extra screen space to help with productivity. This is my first LCD monitor.
Text is sharp, image is excellent. I haven't really tried video except Hulu. However, I get some weird artifact that I think is a function of the video card. I haven't tried connecting this to desktop.
I like the feature of 4 USB ports. My laptop only has 2, but this monitor increases the # of usable ports to 5 (1 free on laptop and 4 on monitor).
The other great feature is the ability to adjust the screen position. I can raise the height, tilt the screen, and swivel. The base is sturdy and I'm not experiencing any wobble. The monitor can be removed from the base and mounted (VESA compatible).
With the limited space on my desk, I like how this has a small footprint.
This monitor has a 5:4 format, and these are probably going by the wayside now that widescreen has taken over. -

Summary: I love this monitor - it's my first flat panel, upgrading from a damaged CRT, so I guess anything would look great at this point. It was shockingly bright when I first hooked it all up but after I got it all adjusted it looks great. I love the fact that I can adjust the height and angles for better viewing, and the extra USB ports are great too. I've had it about two weeks, have had no problems with it at all. The price was a bit high, but you get what you pay for and this has definitely been worth it.

Still the best 17" monitor for the price

Summary: As of the beginning of 2007, the 1707FP remains the best 17" monitor you can get for the price. The CNET review pretty much nails it, as far as features and performance go (though I agree with others here that the stand isn't as wobbly as CNET suggests). Best price you can get on this thing these days is from Dell Outlet--they sell refurbished monitors there, but if there's one piece of computer equipment you can safely buy refurbished, it's the monitor. Mine was $169 and Dell shipped it to me within a week for free. It arrived looking brand new. (EBay prices were 20% higher, when you included shipping.) For $169, you just won't beat this monitor. Period.
