This monitor and an Apple G5 work beautilfully

Summary: I started out thinking I would buy a 20' Apple Cinema. Then I came across the HP 23' and I liked the price but wondered how it compared to the Cinema displays. They were very similar. Then I found Dell's 2405fpw and since it isn't avaible to view, did as much research as possible and bought it. NOT A SINGLE REGRET! For the price of Apple's 20' you get 4 more inches, a multi compact flash card reader, 4 USB ports, the ability to turn this into a TV and Picture in Picture. Here's a good thing to know about all LCD's. They all have similar problems when they occur. If you're seriously worried about accurate color representation, then DON"T BUY AN LCD. NOT APPLE'S NOT SONY'S. This monitor holds it's own to the "top of the line LCD's"
NOTE TO READERS: I'm a film editor and graphic designer by trade.50 out of 51 users found this user opinion helpful.

Perfect!!!

Summary: I bought this monitor for $860 shortly after it came out and after having used it for a couple of months, I have to say that this is the most satisfying computer/electronics purchase I've every made. There are no dead pixel or backlight problems. The monitor is solidly built as is the highly-adjustable stand that it comes with. The color and picture quality are superb for desktop applications. This is immediately apparent when I walk into the Apple store. Where I once stood in awe of the Apple 30" I now think it looks dull and lacking in contrast in comparison to this monitor. Much of the same can be said about every other LCD I've seen since owning this one, including the Dell 2005fpw, which I upgraded from. I do a bit of gaming too and I must say that this is as good as any nice CRT I've played on. There's no picture lag that I can see and the monitor is great in that it lets you choose how you want to scale lower resolutions rather than just stretching them to full screen like so many other brands of LCDs do. So if I'm playing a FPS at 1280x1024 to get higher frame rates, I can leave the picture sharp and unstretched in the center of the display rather than have to deal with the usual graniness that acompanies using lower resolutions on an LCD. I have to say though, that even unstretched the picture at 1280x768 is very useable at about 17". Likewise, games that don't support widescreen can simply be played at 1600x1200 with two black strips on the sides and no funky stretching of the picture. The bottom line is that there are simply no compromises that need to be made with this monitor. Whether your gaming, working, or surfing the web, you will not regret getting one of these babies.

Great monitor for graphic programs, and works as an HDTV

Summary: I waited for this monitor to go on sale, and finally picked one up for $1066 after tax and shipping. When I opened the box it had both analog and DVI connectors. Plugged in the DVI cable and my computer launched as though nothing had changed (I was worried about driver issues popping up). I readjusted my resolution and had nearly twice my usual 1024x768. I downloaded a dead pixel tester, and all of the pixels were good. I then opened up Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere and readjusted my toolbar positions. WOW, major difference in work space. The next test was testing the component inputs.
I could not tell from searching the internet if I would be able to use this as an HDTV, but let me assure you it is possible, as I watched HDTV last night on this monitor. I went to Comcast and asked for one of their HD receivers, and they gave me one, complete with the HD composite cables. I got home, plugged them into this monitor and I was watching SD (standard def) cable. I switched to an HD station and low and behold I was watching HDTV on my new monitor. I had to change one setting (I do not remember what it was) on the monitor for it to disply properly, but that was easy.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Now I just need to track down how to download HD content off of my DVR receiver to my computer.
Highly recommned this monitor for both computer users and TV users (experience wiring a home stereo, or a friend who knows how, is a must). PIP is great also, you can work away on your computer, and watch TV in the window at the same time.29 out of 29 users found this user opinion helpful.

You may have to go through a few returns to get one with no squeal and no dead pixels. Mine was perfect outside of the squeal. See this Dell forum message for details:

Bad for graphic design pros

This monitor is beautiful and perfect for someone that doesn't intend to do design work on it.
I have tried it out for a week now on my dell precision workstation and have to return it due to banding in color blends and tesselated gradients.
Have run tests with the same gradients and color blends on an apple 23" and the difference is big. I'm returning mine for a $600 more expensive apple. The LaCie 21" would be a good alternative but I really like the widescreen canvas.16 out of 20 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: It seems to be a great monitor for the price but after it heats up (about 30 minutes) the chipset humms at the same frequence as when your ears ring. It is not loud, but if you sit infront of the unit at a desk it will drive you crazy. I had Dell send me me a replacement--same thing. Both were built in May 2005 (China). Maybe later builds will be better.... Too bad because I really like it.

Orgasm for the eyes, torture for the ears

But wait!!! Some of them have been shipping with a high-pitch squeal that emits from the back of the display. After the monitor is warmed up, the power supply makes a high pitch noise that reminds me of drilling a screw into your forehead. I immediately got on the phone with Dell and they've really been great. A new one was shipped out and I'm pleased to report that this one is much quieter and no dead pixels.
For more info on the noise, see this Dell forum: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=4451811 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

Absolutely Fabulous! Greatest value!
by sublo on June 19, 2005
Pros: Stunning value. Paid $1099 (corporate rate). Sharp text, highly accurate images. Connectivity options galore. Built in media readers. PIP is great! Adjustability fantastic.
Cons: Where's the HDTV tuner? I'd make it 11 if I could. PIP controls a little difficult at first.
Summary: I could not imagine a better value. Even though I got this from my job at the corporate $1099 rate, I'd still pay $1199 street. It's worth hundreds ...
Summary: I could not imagine a better value. Even though I got this from my job at the corporate $1099 rate, I'd still pay $1199 street. It's worth hundreds more when you consider that it successfuly competed with Apple and Sony 23-24" LCDs in quality (I'm used the Appple 23" personally).
I'm a semi-pro photographer (D70) on the side and do occassional video editing using my TRV-900. I've tested a variety of LCDs with image/video editing. This thing is tops - up there with the best. You'll need a very good newer vid card.
Kudos to Dell! I don't know how they do it in this market at this price! This thing is near perfection!10 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.
