average at best, not true 8bit, poor shading and shadow detail
by bronxbombers3 on July 20, 2006
Pros: size, price, lack of backlight bleed, little lag
Cons: banding, no 1080i, terrible for photoshop and subtle photo and DVD viewing

Summary: Looks great, nice stand, fantastic price, great size, very little backlight bleed, very sharp, not much lag for a 24" LCD, quickly reaches full brightness, has tons of inputs BUT:
1. fake 8bit. really 6 + 2dither bit, so it has a tedency to band, apparent on many websites, windows XP logon, photos have less subtle shading, shadow detail merges all to black unless turned up very bright and adjusted (which makes more banding) and this is with latest A02 revision. gradients in photoshop look horrible. Dell warns to not color profile and to not use Adobe Gamma, because this further increase banding. Samsung 244t uses same panel, but exhibits vastly more subtle and smooth shading with much better shadow detail even with brightness low.
2. no true 1080i over any input, either out of range or de-laced by simply dropping every other field (way worse than 2405)
3. gray object quickly moving over bright backgrounds leave a shimmery yellow, pink or green trail a few pixels wide (like quickly scrolling a window or moving mouse)
in sum: unless you are an absolute die-hard FPS player and lag time is life and death to you and you need to be able to aim to the pixel, forget this and grab the Samsung 244t (with the recent price drop, it doesn't even cost much more now) or wait to see the upcoming stuff in the Fall and early winter. Could've been great, but Dell cheaped out on a couple components and really dropped the ball with this. 244t much better for photo, DVD viewing, web design, same panel but better de-lacing and better DVI electronics.Updated
5. also it stretches 1600x1200 games to 1920x1200, grays out 4:3 and 1:1 option, so if your gfx card does not have center or aspect ratio features (such as most ATI), you are out of luck.
6. it forget most settings in the OSD, so you constantly need to wade through menu and reset stuffUpdated
ok, now Dell says that they do drive the 8bit panle as 8bit (which make sense). however, fact is it still bands and something is wrong.17 out of 19 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not an Upgrade from the 2405!

Summary: I currently own a Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW, and purchased the UltraSharp 2407WFP as an "upgrade" and was planning on using it as my primary display and moving the 2405 to the primary family PC.
That is, until I unwrapped this beast and tried it out. My first impression was one of terrible color reproduction and absolutely horrible banding. Compared to the 2405FPW, it strained my eyes, and everytime I went to a new webpage or viewed an image, my eye would catch the banding, and totally ruined my PC experience. You CANNOT do serious graphics work on this monitor.
I didn't even want to subject the wife and kids to this graphical nightmare, so back it went. I also thank God every day that I have a 2405FPW and wish I had bought two.11 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

Unbelievably stupendous...

Summary: My girlfriend and I bought a pair of these monitors last week. Stupidly large, not overly expensive, and beautiful. Neither of us had a single dead pixel, and it's about the best picture I've ever seen on a computer monitor (seriously). It is 95% as good as those huge Mac monitors we all drool over at the electroni cs shop. If you have a grand to spare, this is worth every penny. If you don't have a grand to spare, get another job and save up until you can afford this monitor. Your eyes might bleed from never leaving your desk, but it's worth it. The only drawback I've noticed is that the monitor is of such high quality, and SO big, that JPEG artifacting is significantly more evident (only really affects some web browsing). This is hardly a fault in the monitor though. Any high-quality display exposes more flaws in JPEG compression. C'est la vie.
In recap, BUY THIS MONITOR. You won't regret it.9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

A03 version: issues fixed, gorgeous

Summary: I did a ton of research before selecting a 24-inch monitor. Like many other users, I was disappointed that the early 2407 models sucked so bar compared to the 2405. However, I also noticed users of the A03 firmware revision seemed happy. Well, mine arrived, and the text is sharp, and there are no vertical or horizontal banding issues. To make the most of the text, Google Cleartype and set your cleartype settings to your taste) (you'll need to do this in Internet Explorer, won't work in Firefox). I also used the settings in my ATI videocard to turn the brightness and contrast down some. I am very happy with this purchase, since it is a real improvement over my 19" inch Dell CRT, which served faithfully for 5 years. I'm 42 and these eyes are thankful for the extra contrast and resolution offered by the Dell. I think you will be very happy with this purchase.

Great monitor, defective stand
by rascalnikov on January 26, 2007

Summary: I ordered a Dell 2407FPW (24" widescreen) monitor last week. When I set it up, it had a noticeable tilt to the right. The distance from the top of my desk to the bottom left corner was 1.5cm different from the the top of my desk to the bottom right corner. The level could not be adjusted by rotating the monitor because it rotates clockwise while the adjustment would be a counter-clockwise turn. Applying downward pressure on the top left corner and/or upward pressure on the bottom right corner did not work. The monitor flexed back to its original, tilted position. The only solution was to place an object weighing approximately 16 oz. on the 4.0cm-wide top left corner of the monitor. (A Swingline stapler works well, but a can of Spam is too light.) The problem was not with the monitor but with the stand and bracket that connects it to the monitor. It was a manufacturing or design defect of a few minor parts.
Though the stapler corrected the issue, I still wanted a defect-free monitor. I contacted Dell Customer Care on the day the item was received. They informed me that they would send me a replacement monitor with a pre-paid return shipping label in 5-7 days. The monitor was shipped overnight so I received it 2 days after my call. But when I set up the replacement monitor, I noticed that it had the same flaw. I tried to manually correct it but the stapler was still the only solution. I called Dell back and informed them of the problem with the replacement monitor. They offerred to send me a third monitor with no guarantees of a defect-free product. I suggested that they give me a 10% discount because I thought that that would be quite fair. The support rep. put me on hold and spoke to her manager and they countered with an offer for a $50 coupon on next purchase. But I didn't want to buy another Dell product, I just wanted a proper monitor. So they connected me with Technical Support so that I could once again explain the problem with the monitor stand and connecting bracket. After being put on hold several times, they again offerred to send me a third monitor. I suggested the 10% discount again and it was finally accepted. Excluding my first call to Customer Care, I spent 2 hours on the phone speaking with a customer support and technical support rep. who put me on hold a total of 6 times while speaking with their respective managers. My issue was finally resolved after a lot of wasted time. They are crediting my account slightly over 10% within 3-21 days and they are arranging for someone to pick up the original monitor from my apartment.
Me, my brother, and my father have had many other negative experiences with Dell Customer Support for PCs so our families will never purchase another Dell PC again. I will encourage them to also never buy another Dell product because it's not worth the hassle to deal with their horrible customer support.
This is a great monitor but the stand is not manufactured correctly. If you are on the fence about buying this monitor then buy one from another company or buy the 19" model. But you'd be saving yourself a lot of trouble if you just refused to ever buy another Dell product again.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought this screen new from Dell 6 weeks ago and yesterday it stopped working while I was browsing the net. It shows the backlight but just a black screen, I tried all the imputs and still no images.
I called Dell to get it replaced under the "Advanced Exchange Next Business Day Warranty" only to be told that it would take between 10-14 days. After a lot of shouting to an Indian man who could hardly understand me, they explained that they dont keep stock in Australia even thought they advertise that they will replace it within 1 business day... This is obviosly absolutly impossible as the new LCD had to come from Malaysia. So here I am waiting..... and useing my 15 inch backup.

Summary: This is the 5th LCD I've owned - a by far the best for the money, although the price on the Dell 2007WFP makes it very attractive, the 24" of real estate on this monitor is hard to beat. I also use a Dell 2005WFP for secondary applications on another PC. When I ran my ColorVision ColorPlus hardware monitor calibrator, this display required no adjustments, something that can't be said for the 2 Viewsonic LCD's I owned. I have read comments that the stand is wobbly, but I haven't experienced that, as I built a custom slot on my workstation that this display fits into snugly and firmly. I got mine in Nov ,06 for $550, plus tax, free shipping. It was on sale for $680, but I saw a link for "apply your coupons", and though I wasn't aware of any coupons, I clicked it and it re-calculated the price to $550 (cost me $580 with sales tax). So, if you've ever shopped, registered, or purchased from Dell, look for that "apply my coupons" link - you may be pleasantly surprised.

Don't buy this monitor - serious defects!!!!

I was motivated to buy this because of the
low price, and I had bought laptops earlier
from Dell which were OK.
I was surprised when the monitor I initially
ordered stopped working in 2 days. I thought
it was great for the first two days, and then
suddenly, I saw some major problems with the
image on the screen getting completely garbled.
When I called up Dell, they
agreed to replace it. However, I wasted a
lot of time and money - calling up the
customer service on the phone, talking with
them, getting a return authorization code,
dropping off the defective monitor at an
UPS store, etc. etc.
The worst part is that the replacement
monitor they sent me has a problem too.
I keep seeing horizontal flickering in
random areas of the screen every few seconds!
I wasted some more time on the phone with
their technical support - the person on the
other side had no idea how to repair the
problem - she took remote control and was
looking to increase the vertical frequency
to 75 Hz. (The monitor only supports 60 Hz
vertical frequency at its native 1920x1200
resolution).
Now, I am just keeping my fingers crossed
that that they will return my money (which
they agreed to after some emails back and
forth - some more waste of my time).
I would advise others to look at monitors
from other manufacturers even if they are
a bit more expensive.4 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Living large and happy at a low price
by sleepr0 on August 5, 2006
Pros: Bright, fast, excellent connectivity, easy adjustment, affordable
Cons: Looks "smudgy" at anything but native resolution. Requires an expensive video card for gaming, barely adequate documentation, OSD controls difficult
Summary: The 24" Dell 2407 is as good as it gets in LCD-dom. It's well made and designed, very bright, great for watching DVDs and gaming.
The 2407 (6/6/...Summary: The 24" Dell 2407 is as good as it gets in LCD-dom. It's well made and designed, very bright, great for watching DVDs and gaming.
The 2407 (6/6/06 and later) with the A02 firmware is really smart and easy to live with. Adjusting position is fingertip easy thanks to counterbalancing in the stand. Portrait mode makes one TALL diplay too. The card readers and USB ports are an excellent extra, although the left-sided USB ports would have been better on the right. Portrait mode puts 2 of the 4 ports on the top of the display - pretty silly considering the altitude.
If this id your first LCD, there are some general tradeoffs that you should be aware of. These things only look sharp at native resolutions and maybe one other. Anything else produses that "smudged" look. If your diplay is as big as this, it requires such high resolutions that gaming becomes taxing on the video card.
Also, scaling becomes and issue in widescreens. If your video drivers don't support scaling to non-native resolutions, the display will simply stretch the image horizontally, adding to the "smudging" woes. This display will not allow you to prevent stretching of the image by itself. Your video drivers must do that.
The resolution and scaling issues are not unique to this LCD widesreen, so I give it a 9 of 10 (I don't believe in "10s"). You will not be disappointed in the Dell 2407WFP. I'm happy as a clam.Updated
