The good: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 has a super high-resolution screen that shows images in a fidelity we've not seen on a 27-inch display before. Also, the monitor exhibits deep blacks while watching movies, vibrant color in games, has a robust onscreen display, and has a plethora of connection options.
The bad: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 is missing the pivot option that the U2410 had. Also, buyers may find its price prohibitive.
The bottom line: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 is a feature-rich monitor with incredible performance that earns its high price.

Best monitor I have ever owned.
by bawbee on February 18, 2012
Pros: Superb build quality. Simple to set up. Height adjustment and swivel are excellent and easy to use. Glare free screen. Very reliable.
Cons: No pivot from landscape to portrait, otherwise I would have rated it at 5 stars.
Summary: I bought this monitor to replace another brand which was unreliable. I primarily use it for photography but I also use it for browsing and have installed an HD TV ...
Summary: I bought this monitor to replace another brand which was unreliable. I primarily use it for photography but I also use it for browsing and have installed an HD TV card. It works well with all applications and is particularly good with photo editing. In short, it is a pleasure to use.

Many Problems With This Monitor! Read Forums!

Pros: The pros have pretty much been listed already.

Summary: I had paid nearly $1000 for this monitor, never again nor can I recommend this monitor to anyone because of the issues I've been having and found many other people having the same and similar issuesl Google the search words "Dell U2711 Faulty" and your search with show pages upon pages of people reporting problems with this monitor seeking solutions for the same. In all my searching so far I haven't found one person that has reported having a solution to their issues even after replacing their monitor thru Dell! Does that kind-of hint to the U2711 being faulty in design or what?
As for me I've had horizontal white lines appearing on the left half of the screen varying from mild to extreme at times. This issue was with the 1st U2711 monitor I originally purchased from Dell last year. I had tried changing graphics card drivers, replacing the DVI-D cable with a new one, switching connection ports on the monitor and blowing out any dust inside the cabinet. I had read about people swapping out their graphics cards and still having the same issues I've been having. The computer I've been using with this Dell U2711 monitor is not junk, either. Here's a list showing some specs:
Dell XPS 410 desktop PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Nvidia 9800 GT graphics card (all updated drivers)
8 gigs of RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU - 2.93 GHz
Philips BDD1001 Blu-Ray optical drive
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7221S optical drive w/Lightscribe
Twin single platter hard drives 596GB running RAID 0
I called Dell and they sent a replacement U2711 which arrived yesterday. Luckily I have the 3 year replacement warranty. The replacement monitor isn't displaying white horizontal lines as before, but is occasionally displaying a big bunch of green dots filling the screen! The only thing that helps a bit is if I gently nudge the DVI-D cable connector at the monitor. This also worked a bit as a temporary solution with the 1st U2711 monitor I had.
I don't know what to do anymore! So many people are reporting issues with this monitor that I think the only solution might be to request a different model replacement thru Dell. -
Great, and then some!

Pros: Ultra rich and deep colors, high resolution, first class design and build quality, plenty of connection options, and again, picture quality!!!
Cons: Price. (but it is truly worth it)
Generates considerable amounts of heat.Summary: Forget everything at this price range, this is the one to go for and I dare to say even at any price range.

Avoid Dell's UltraSharp Monitors

Pros: Terrific resolution, lots of ports, attractive, ergonomic

Summary: This is a terrific monitor for gaming and HD movies, but I found it completely unsuitable for my office. As one of the other reviews states, the anti-glare coating on this monitor makes reading plain text extremely difficult. The monitor looks great when displaying video or high-res, colorful images but I quickly developed headaches when trying to use email and word processing. This is unacceptable: as a PC monitor, this unit needs to be suitable for work, not just HD movies or gaming. My current pair of Dell 2407WFPHC monitors are "only" 1920x1200 but at least I can use them for everyday work.

It's okay if you don't mind the anti-glare coating
by gshank on February 9, 2011
Pros: High resolution and lots of ports - I use the mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort with my MacBookPro and the cable was much cheaper than the mini DisplayPort to DualLink DVI.
Cons: The anti-glare coating/film SUCKS - I would have returned it but I got it for a really good price and I do like all the port options (compared to the Apple 27" cinema display).
Summary: Unless you can get a really good price on it AND you can live with the anti-glare coating - you might want to consider another monitor. I've seen some ...
Summary: Unless you can get a really good price on it AND you can live with the anti-glare coating - you might want to consider another monitor. I've seen some people take the anti-glare coating off but I'm not willing to risk damaging the monitor doing it myself. I wish Dell would offer this monitor without the anti-glare.

The price is justified if you are a gamer.
by digitaltangerine on February 7, 2011
Pros: Resolution is a world ahead of other monitors. Color reproduction is fantastic. And if you use it for gaming like I do, it quite literally catapults you into a whole new world you never knew existed. Yes, it's that good - no exageration.
Cons: Runs very hot and not much offered in the way of stand adjustments for pivot/height.

Summary: If you have the cash for it, then this monitor is worth every single penny. When I first saw the price for Dell monitors I laughed and moved on. Several monitors later ( trying different ones and taking them back ), I figured I'd give the Ultrasharp a shot. Well wow. Just wow. First you notice the resolution and all of a sudden you wonder how you ever managed on an old 1050 resolution monitor which is what most are still sold as. Then you see the colors and a small tear of joy forms in the corner of your eye. I use the screen exclusively for gaming and it is just amazing how different the world looks with this monitor ( I play SC2 ... WoW occasionally ...and currently Rift in the beta which REALLY shows what it can do ). For reference - I've got the monitor coupled with a EVGA GTX480. Bottom line is: If you take your gaming seriously, then step up. You may be wondering how Dell can justify the price - but you will understand once you experience it. It'll change your gaming experience.

Worst anti-glare coating ever
by Markarian421 on January 17, 2011
Pros: I like the size, 30" seems to big, this seems just right.
The resolution is really nice.Cons: Sparkly and course anti-glare coating washes things out and it very distracting during photo editing.

Summary: First, full disclosure: I've tried this monitor with a couple macs, Also in general I'm a big fan of Dell monitors, I have two right now at home (where I do a lot of photo image processing) and I've had nothing but Dell monitors at work for years (where I do scientific image processing). I've never had a complaint about their monitors, in general the Ultrasharp series are great quality for a good price.
On to this monitor: I've had two of these now, and while I really like the size and resolution I think I'm going to give up. The first one had a few bad pixels, pretty bad backlight bleedthrough in one corner (and noticeable in all 4 corners) and one dark corner. How do you get a corner to have bleedthrough when it's dark and be dark when it's light? On that one the top layer of the screen also seemed to not fit quite right, it would make a pop when I tried to wipe the screen like it was moving. The second one had much more severe backlight bleedthough in only one corner, and then one spot along the top pf the screen. It was visible in normal computer use, not just dark scenes. So either I'm extremely unlucky or the quality control is just not what it should be. None of the other Dell monitors I've used have had a single bad pixel or this level of bleedthrough.
And then there's the truly puzzling antiglare coating. It's not a matte finish like the other Dell monitors I've had, it's more course and kind of sparkly. When the screen is bright it's really annoying, when there's any room light it makes the screen look washed out. It's intolerable for photo editing, which is what I got this monitor for -- it makes my images look noisy and speckled. And again, all of this is in comparison to other Dell monitors. I'd never considered getting a glossy screen for photo editing before looking at photos on this screen, but that would be better than this. Best would be a matte finish like their older monitors had.
I got this monitor for photo editing because of the resolution, size, and color calibration. But the uneven backlight & bleedthrough and sparkly coating make it entirely unsuitable for that. I guess it's going back. -
Superb, expensive yet very good image quality
by EvilPetey on November 12, 2010
Pros: Excellent image clarity, colour reproduction, viewing angle, resolution and dark detail. This monitor has more than twice the number of pixels than my 22" @ 1680x1050!
Cons: Slight clouding in areas in dark room test, but nothing noticeable in use.

Summary: I used to think all LCD monitor had poor picture quality compared to my Diamondtron CRT, which could produce such a large dynamic range between black and colour - images that looked like you could reach out and touch them. When the CRT died, I baulked at the thought of getting an expensive, nasty LCD. I did my research and decided to get this monitor - I have not looked back.

A superb display!
by goodguy1234ass on October 31, 2010
Pros: Huge size, with a very high resolution and pixel pitch, allowing for very sharp images.
Excellent color accuracy, especially once calibrated.
Very good range of smooth ergonomic adjustments (tilt, swivel and height adjustment)Cons: No pivot option, though for a screen this size then this would be impractical.
Summary:
The vast majority of gamers would not notice the mediocre input lag and response time anyway.

The vast majority of gamers would not notice the mediocre input lag and response time anyway.
Updated on Oct 31, 2010
The 'grainy' anti-glare coating is nowhere near as obtrusive as some make it out to be, and is infinitely less annoying than trying to work with glossy displays such as those in Apple's range.
Though it is quite expensive and it takes a while to get used to its sheer size, the U2711 is worth every penny of its price.

Decent but power button in the wrong place!
by petoi on July 14, 2010
Pros: Nice big bright display, great for spreading things out horizontally. Works well as a companion to Mac Book Pro Laptop.
Cons: They put the power button right where you want to grab the monitor to adjust angle or height. I don't know how many times I have accidentally turned off the monitor in since I have owned the thing! I suspect I will adjust, but did they test this?
