HP 2311x price range: $189.99 - $353.90

The good: The HP 2311x includes the trifecta of connection options, all placed in an easily accessible spot. Don't expect world-beating performance, but for $230 it's quite good and even more impressive currently from Amazon.com for $180.
The bad: The monitor has no ergonomic support beyond tilt, its Movie and Gaming presets are too dark, and it has a plastic-feeling build quality. Some audio options would have been useful.
The bottom line: The HP 2311x is a great monitor deal, with good performance and a great assortment of connections for its price.

One out of 2 failed after 10 months

Summary: I purchased two of these monitors on a Black Friday sale, and used them simultaneously. One decided to sporatically turn on and off, once it reached a normal operating temperature. Because I threw it in a box during moving and didn't get around to reporting it to HP until aver 365 days, it was denied warranty. Fair enough, but there should be a good customer service policy.
As far as technical features, you can not raise the monitor; it is at a fixed position. I built a stand for my monitors, and it works very well. -
A beautiful replacement/upgrade from an HP w2207
by agtrains1 on June 26, 2012
Pros: Thin; glossy finish; very easy set up; perpendicular inputs very nice a comparative hassle with the parallel ones on the old HP w2207); worked as advertised right out of the box; great price point value; another winner for HP!
Cons: Miss the vertical adjustment as on the HP w2207

Summary: This was a replacement for our older HP w2207, so with the HP 2311x, we did get a slightly larger screen. It is part of the main computer hook-up in our home office, so it's primary use is for text, along with some photo archiving. It more than meets this test.
Packaging was very good and secure, and all included items were present. Set-up was a snap, and the minimalist, illustrated instructions were perfect. Matching up to our HP H8 desktop under Windows 7 presented no problems, and we were ready to go in almost no time.
Features are much the same as on our old monitor, so there was no real learning curve here. If there are any display adjustment issues, the CNET's own review and adjustment recommendations are well worth copying for future reference. Love the inclusion of the needed DVI cable (a nice upgrade from our old computer's VGA-only hook-up). Noticed some of the referenced loss of detail in deep black scenes using a DVD, but based on our intended uses, this is a non-issue. The anti-glare screen also presents no problem, as both text and pictures are easy on the eyes. In fairness, our old HP w2207 had a glossy screen, but we had no real problems, so the new 2311x is no big change for us.
The price point at $168.99 through Staples made this a very attractive unit. Though some other brands offer a 3-year warranty, we have been very comfortable and successful with HP products. Their standard 1-year warranty is not an issue, and we have had good experience with HP's customer support.
Reading lots of reviews for some other comparable and highly-rated units yields a surprising number of issues: having to calibrate units to make them properly display; and, questionable customer service and replacement of defective units. Some examples reported: long waits for replacement units in some cases; some customer service encounter that were unintelligible and/or not very helpful/knowledgeable; and, having to pay the freight charges one-way, even for warranty replacement).
After extensive research, it boiled down to our comfort level. Maybe we are not that picky or not that adventurous. Even so, there are many seemingly fine choices in this current price range, so it pays to shop around, see the units up close and personal, and read reviews. After a lot of hunting around, we feel that this HP 2311x will be a great match to our new desktop. -

Beautiful monitor
by SatyrMage on May 6, 2011
Pros: Sized, and priced, just right. Clean, bright display, small footprint, lightweight, energy efficient.
Cons: Lightweight has it's disadvantages: as the control buttons are edge mounted, you're actually moving the monitor (almost lifting it) when you press a button (say, to turn it on!)
Summary: As a 23" widescreen display, I'm very pleased with this model. I was actually shopping for a 25", but nobody in town seemed to have 'em in stock so... ...
Summary: As a 23" widescreen display, I'm very pleased with this model. I was actually shopping for a 25", but nobody in town seemed to have 'em in stock so... I settled for this. Settled, at the store, that is. Very good color - with an auto-adjustment feature that works very cleanly and well. Colors are saturated well (not washed out) considering how bright the monitor is. In fact, I actually had to turn the brightness DOWN a bit, but I have a variably bright room, so it works well for me.
All video modes look great (even standard VGA, factoring in the stretch). Response, while 5ms, is still surprisingly smooth and sharp (though I do rendering, not intensive gaming). I haven't had an opportunity to hook up DVI-D or HDMI yet, and I'm still impressed with only VGA input.
All in all, I'm very happy with this monitor. High value for the money. -
DOn't buy if you use HDMI input
by BK207 on March 20, 2012
Pros: good price
Cons: There is a design flaw in this monitor. It doesn't recognzie HDMI input automatically. you have to manually choose it via the on-screen menu EVERY time you turn it on, as it defaults back to VGA. HP support was of no help.
Summary: see cons. Don't buy if you use HDMI.
