An otherwise beautiful monitor with one fatal flaw
by Montrose on October 14, 2007
Pros: Sharp image, bright colors, high contrast, good viewing angles, good video playback, sharp text.

Summary: This is a nearly perfect monitor with one fatal flaw. It flickers terribly as it warms up. The flicker is not caused by low refresh settings or connection type. It seems to be caused by the backlight itself. Changing connection types or refresh settings does not seem to fix the problem. After the monitor has run for 15-20 minutes and the backlight has warmed up the flicker diminishes but is still noticeable on any bright white screen surface.
Normally I'd simply assume that my specific screen was merely defective and trade it in for another of the same make and model, but I'm not the only one who has noticed this obnoxious problem. If you take a look at any of the major reviews for this product at major resellers you'll see that many other people have also noticed a flicker problem with this monitor. Others reviews have not noticed any problem at all.
I believe that this is for two reasons. First, the monitor does not always flicker. It only seems to do so for about 10 minutes or so while its warming up after being cool from being off. Second, some people are more sensitive to flicker than others. I have always been more sensitive than most to a flickering screen. I can visibly see flicker on almost any CRT screen set to 85Hz lower. My wife however cannot see any flicker at all on a CRT at 60HZ. To me it looks like a strobe light.
In any case, this is a great monitor except for the flicker issue. If you're not the type that can see or is bothered by screen flicker this monitor is a bargain. If you're sensitive to it like I am you may want to consider a different monitor.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Works & Looks Great.

Summary: I've owned this unit for about a week now, and I love it. It works great. So far no problems. At first I wasn't sure about Samsung, until my brother told me that they are very good @ making LCD monitors, and infact they make the monitors for a lot of other companies! I have to say, I am very suprised at how good of a picture this unit has. The adjustments and controls on it are plenty. You can tweak this thing, to look exactly how you want it to look! The setup was a little too much for me, but I think it's probably due to my video card being kind of old! I have to update my video card. I watched the movie Mission to Mars on it, and it looked awesome! I didn't even use the DVI input either! You can't go wrong with this unit. I used to have an Acer unit prior to this, and it was junk! I highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants to upgrade, or replace their monitor. The 21.6" size is awesome...

Great monitor, have used it for a long time!
by rbaylis91 on August 13, 2011
Pros: This monitor has worked flawlessly since I bought it about 4 years ago. Great brightness, ability for vga + dvi switching back and forth.
Cons: Only a few small drawbacks. 1 Its stand base is a little large and 2 It has no built in speakers.
Summary: Even now when it's so old I still love It and it hasn't failed me yet!

Wonderful monitor!

Pros: Excellent clarity of picture, DVI/VGA output, swiveling base, not a CRT
Cons: Where's the HDMI love?

Summary: I despise CRTs. Ever since I got my first laptop and was free of those enormous screens, I've been a different computer user. But when I got a desktop to go alongside my laptop, I needed a screen to go with it -- my parents obliged by giving me their old CRT. Long story short, I found the SyncMaster quite by accident, while looking for something else at the office store I was shopping in at the time.
My SyncMaster's enclosure differs somewhat from the one posted on CNET: the case is glossy black around the screen, with a strip of silver along the bottom; the power button sticks out prominently on the lower right, with adjustment buttons on the bottom. It also boasts a base that can swivel around -- an asset when you have this monitor hooked up to your media center.
My "media center" happened to be an old Power Mac G4, and I had trouble getting the machine to recognize the monitor at first. But after some more attempts at getting it working, it worked just fine, until the G4's logic board gave out on me. Time to look into getting an old PC to serve the purpose... and the monitor's coming along for the ride.
The monitor, no matter the operating system or computer it's attached to, works superbly. The picture quality is positively amazing in comparison to the CRT I bid farewell to, with striking contrast and wonderful brightness. It's a pleasure to browse the 'net in Safari or Firefox, and when it's hooked up to my MacBook (pinch-hitting as my PC running Windows Vista), it's a pleasure to stare at code in Visual Studio 2005. The monitor even works at full resolution with my PowerBook G3, an eight-year-old laptop! The best part? It's not glossy.
My only gripe is the lack of an HDMI port. I realize I can get an HDMI-to-DVI cable that will serve the same purpose, but it would be nice to have the distinct input so that I could incorporate the monitor into my entertainment center setup and still be able to use it with my computer.
In short, Samsung makes fine products, and this monitor is no exception. Anyone who's searching for a CRT replacement, or an upgrade from a smaller LCD, needs to investigate this monitor. -
Good monitor, bad flicker
by tuong.ta on March 20, 2008
Pros: Size, price, Samsung reputation
Cons: Terrible flicker
Summary: Re-iterating what others have already said, this is a great monitor IF you can get over the occasional flicker. I found it extremely distracting. Otherwise, great price, color, etc.

Summary: I have had mine a week now and love it. Got it at Costco for %259. I was concerned about the flickering commments I read, but not a problem what so ever with mine. The text is sharp which was my main criteria. I use mine for strictly work using email, internet, and MS Office. Perfect size. You couldn't do better for the price.

Summary: The monitor worked well for 3 days. Then, it malfunctioned. It started to flicker and display different colors. I will not recommend this. Samsung is said to be good at making LCD screens but my experience has been bad. I would recommend LG. I purchased a 17inch LCD monitor from LG one year ago and it has had absolutely no problems. Samsung is just a waste of time and money.
