Sony PlayStation 3D display price range: $249.96
- Reviewed by: Jeff Bakalar
- Reviewed on: 11/21/2011
- Released on: 11/15/2011
The good: The PlayStation 3D Display successfully enables two players to see their own individual screens while using SimulView technology, though the display only comes with one pair of 3D glasses. Also included is an HDMI cable and a copy of MotorStorm: Apocalypse.
The bad: The display's glare is terrible, as the surface reflects nearly everything in sight. The screen's small 23.5-inch size makes it tough to play at far distances and forces the players to sit nearly shoulder to shoulder to get the right effect. There's no included remote control, which makes it difficult to change sources and settings; the buttons are hidden around the back. The display only comes with one pair of 3D glasses, preventing gamers from using SimulView right out of the box. Finally, the device's auto-off feature triggers too quickly.
The bottom line: While there's some pretty impressive technology built inside, the PlayStation 3D Display isn't a very practical device. Its $500 price tag is too much money considering its laundry list of shortcomings.

Great Picture and Awesome 3D; but a very annoying ISSUE
by Lapwner on January 19, 2012
Pros: -Great picture quality
-Great for new 3D users (such as myself)
-Motorstorm is awesome in 3D
-Includes HDMI cable
-Good audio quality
-Switching from a 40" to this display wasn't as hard as I thought it would be
-1080p looks greatCons: -Not worth the $499 price tag (I got mine for $299)
-Screen blanking ISSUE; blanks the screen for a few seconds randomly; happens often
-No remote included
-Glossy screen can get annoying
-3D glasses can get uncomfortable after continuous playSummary: Overall I enjoy this product, however, the screen blanking issue is very common and can get very annoying...contacted Sony (others have to) and they seem to be oblivious to ...
Summary: Overall I enjoy this product, however, the screen blanking issue is very common and can get very annoying...contacted Sony (others have to) and they seem to be oblivious to this issue for some reason. Also, this isn't worth $500 in my opinion, I picked it up for $299 and was still wondering whether or not I payed too much. But in the end, this is a great display for people who want to try out 3D, or just want a small display to game with in their room or office.

It's a great TV / monitor for a small space
by icedcornholio on November 21, 2011
Pros: Can be used in 3D with your Xbox 360 or PC; picture is goregous and Sony Bravia-like. Two HDMI inputs and one Component input. Audio is decent -- better than I expected but not home theater quality.
Cons: No remote? what was sony thinking? Also, no TV tuner so you'll have to bring your own access (I view TV through my Tivo)
Summary: Don't let this official review fool you, it's a much better TV than the reviewer implies.

Yes, there is no Cable IN, so you'll have to watch TV through another source, like a Cable converter box via HDMI or a Tivo. There's also no remote control but anyone on this site most likely has some sort of universal remote (Harmony) or buys the PS3 Blu-Ray remote which controls the TV, so it's not really a bad thing.
While it's neat that the HDMI signal can control the power (you shut off the PS3 or 360, it will shut off the TV and vice versa, it did seem unable to read the Tivo via HDMI unless I hit the tivo button first. I worked around this by using component instead and turned off the HDMI power control.
These are minor things. the 3D effect is great and the Simulview is a great idea. I hope more games have this, but right now selection is limited.
You can play CoD Black Ops on your 360 in 3D, you just have to change the 3D mode to side-by-side. It's very easy to do. There's a 3d button on the blu ray remote to change the type of 3D.
And of course, the size. 24" is great for my office space and perfect. It's replacing a 24" so I'm okay with it.
If you're looking for a 50" this isn't the TV for you. You get a game, glasses and a 3D TV for under $500. You can't beat it...and it's a SONY television. Did I mention how good 1080p looks -- you can tell the difference even on a 24" from 720 to 1080.
So, don't let the review fool you. This is a great set priced right.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great for Both Playstation, and as a computer monitor!
by reynoldstoronto on January 5, 2012
Pros: Glass like finish
Beautiful design (Quite thin)
Great for desk / Dorm
3D Looks Amazing
Included 1.4 HDMI cable
Other Sony Remotes work (not included)Cons: Glass like finish
HDMI signal must contain the audio signal for use of speakers.
No headphone jack
No VGA port
Ports come out to the right 3" for the edge of the display, so i can visibly see my cables, which also are Very close the the buttons.Summary: This works with my macbook (4 years old) great, some have complained about the text looking "blocky". Summary: This works with my macbook (4 years old) great, some have complained about the text looking "blocky". This can be easily solved by turning down sharpness, and the picture looks smooth yet still very crisp. This display is Very Glossy, The best way to imagine it is that is Very similar to the new macbook pro's glass screen (I dont believe this displays glass) where it seams to be a mirror. If your desk is set up with a window behind you, you will be very disappointed with the results. The Speakers are not bad for a Display, but then again, i have never found ANY tv to have satisfying speakers. If you plan to use the display as a monitor for your computer, and plan to take advantage of the built in speakers, be aware that your computer must output the audio via HDMI. I am Overall VERY Happy with this display, (did not test simulview, It's just for me to play on), and would recommend this at the on sale price ($299) but not at full price.

A fantastic 3D display at a great price!
by jlj9064 on November 29, 2011
Pros: The screen is crisp and colorful. The 3D is amazing(depending on the media source of course). Pretty decent sound for a monitor like this. Including a pair of glasses and an HDMI cable is a nice bonus. Comes with Motorstorm Apocalypse
Cons: No included remote(this can be fixed by purchasing the playstation media remote). Screen might be too small for some. A couple more HDMI inputs would have been nice. Screen glare might be a problem in certain environments because of the glossy glass.
Summary: I think this is a fantastic display that meets all my needs perfectly. It's a really good computer monitor and playing games or Watching HD media on this thing ...
Summary: I think this is a fantastic display that meets all my needs perfectly. It's a really good computer monitor and playing games or Watching HD media on this thing is a real treat(in 2D or 3D). It includes everything you need to jump right into 3D content and any additional things you need like glasses or remotes are fairly priced. All in all I think this is an amazing display that will satisfy anybody looking for a display in this size.

Summary: Bottom line is if you don't need to see 3D on a 50 inch plus screen get this. It does what it should very well. If you already own the new PS3 remote, you have one for this monitor. Without the extra's (HDMI, game, glasses) the monitor cost about $250 which isn't that bad at all.

Died after 1 month, Blinking Red Light. DO NOT BUY!

Summary: I was ecstatic to bring this display home and hook it up to a second 80 GB fat Playstation in the bedroom. It worked fantastically, both with 3D and without. But after 1 month it died. I'd read about the defect, and on some Sony sites it is no longer for sale, but I thought I'd dodged that bullet. For perspective and GT5 fans, I'd gone from start to Level 20 on Gran Turismo 5 by the time this display no longer continued to function. When I turn it on, I get a blue light on the bottom, then a green light, then a red light, then a series of blinking red lights. No picture. No indication of activity in the LCDs. This is unacceptable on Sony's part, when there are clearly so many buyers who experience the same thing. Stop selling the damn thing! Start listening when people call in to describe the issue. And most importantly, fix the problem.

Summary: This became better then i thought, i wasnt expecting this to over do the monitor i was using before for gaming/movies by this much. Real vivid & amazing picture qaulity. And it comes with 3D setup & i dont have to spend mess load to get a 3D TV. I was drooling when i seen the huge difference on the monitor i had used for xbox 360 and hook this up. Skyrim & BF3 & Black Ops 2 looked like a dream. Bought a lcd monitor tuner with remote & for watching tv ($35), so now its gaming/watching tv/sports/ blu-ray movies....all for ($200 & freeshipping). They make another one for the next system down the road, i'll be looking into getting one as well. Its not huge like a 40'-50' but on what you can do with all of this for the price, how can you go wrong. I love mine and didnt expect it to be as good as it is now.

Would be worth 5 stars if it actually worked- ISSUES!
by psybermatt on September 4, 2012
Pros: Compact size, just big enough for office/den. Decent quality video, easay to setup and use. Big fan of 3d tech - this is great entry point.
Cons: Issues, that common to ALL units:
1. Audio - turning up the volume distorts it greatly. Have to sit close and keep it down.
2. Video - Black screens while playing (Often)
3. Blinking RED LED OF DEATH- Sony can't fix. Refurb units last 2 days.Summary: DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE BUYING. KEEP EXTRA $300 TO BUY A SPARE, OR JUST BUY TWO NOW.

I bought my unit in early Feb during the after-Christmas sale period. Best Buy had this for $399 before the holiday, and only $299 after - in a combo with a 3D movie, Game, and Extra pair of glasses. It seemed like an excellent deal at the time.
I played it off an on for about a month and watched maybe 2 3d movies. Then I went off to work, off to vacation.. Came home this summer and turned it on. Used it for about 4 hours and then shut it off. The next day I tried to turn it on, and nothing.. Just a little blinking red light. I went online to research it - I figured there would be a decoder to tell me the difference in 2 blinks vs 3 blinks (mine blinks 3 times) and was hopeful this would lead me to an answer so I could fix it and keep enjoying it. Unfortunately, endless Google searches kept pointing me back to the same discussion across myriad message boards - EVERYONE has had this problem, and NO ONE has a solution. You can try calling Sony and there's a 50/50 chance (and that's being nice, because we assuming that either they help or they don't - in real statistics, maybe it's a 20/80 chance or worse...). By law, they have to honor a 1yr warranty on electronics, but good luck convincing them! On top of that, most people are sent a refurbished unit that lasts anywhere from 2 days to 2 months :( Guys, I'm calling for a class action on this one! Either we get a TV that works, or we get a full refund. I don't need a 20lb paperweight on my dresser. -
GREAT PRODUCT!!!

Summary: The display is like a mirror honestly, but the glare doesn't affect me. I heard such screens make picture quality better, I don't know for sure but believe me the display is super clear. The Cnet reviewer says screen size is small, that's true but not for everyone. It isn't meant for the living room OBVIOUSLY, I'm in a dorm and for me it's PERFECT.The auto-off triggers quickly....lol who cares , not a con for me. The positives outweigh the negatives this isn't a average product it's great, if you can afford it. I'm a gamer, a student and it soothes my needs. GREAT PRODUCT.

Use for PS3 only then you are fine
by Flyguy29 on November 29, 2011
Pros: Good quality LCD, FULL Screen 2 player mkde
Cons: Sony should have this capability on thejr mainstream, sets as initial adopters are gaming enthusiasts will want a bigger screena nd to double it as a mainstream tv.
Summary: The reviewer clearly doesn't unserstand the target audience for this set. Gameroom TV which you set once but not a TV. I agree on the remote
