The good: Optical image stabilization delivers sharper handheld photos at slow shutter speeds; lightweight, compact, and affordably priced; good optics for its class.
The bad: Poor manual focus ring design; plastic construction less desirable than metal; 55mm maximum focal length may leave you short.
The bottom line: The Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens is a solidly performing medium-zoom lens, with good optics and image stabilization, that will appeal to more than just the entry-level crowd.

Excellent Kit Lens...some Flaws

Pros: Small/Compact
Lightweight
Quality to price ratio is excellent
Very good quality images
Very nice wide angle
Cons: 'Flimsy' zoom ring
Moving focus ring
Slightly slow focusing
Zoom strength falls short about 30% of the time
No lens hood included, lens cover is rather easy to fall off

Summary: Overall I believe this lens provides a lot of features for it's cost. The image stabilization is very good and the overall picture quality is excellent.
Although just like several other Canon lenses, the kit does not provide a lens hood.
I also found that the lens cover is quite small and sloppy. The lens can be quite easily taken off the lens which exposes the lens to scratches.
I highly recommend this kit lens for a beginner photography (such as me) in DSLR photography.

Summary: I purchased this lens and after three weeks light usage the Focus Mode Switch/Image Stabiliser Switch housing became detached from the lens body and was lost. The lens is at present being examined by Canon with a view to repairing it if possible. Disappointing for a new product. They should have given me a new one as a replacement.
