The good: Lightweight and compact; affordably priced; very usable manual focus capability; optical image stabilization for sharper handheld photos at slow shutter speeds.
The bad: All-plastic construction, which is less durable than metal; sharpness falls off at 250mm where it is likely to see a lot of use.
The bottom line: A lightweight, compact design coupled with its stabilized 400mm-equivalent focal length zoom and affordable price make the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS a versatile lens for entry-level shooters and amateurs on a budget.

Excellent budget telephoto lens

Summary: I've been using this lens for a short time and have found it to be an nice compliment to the standard lens kit on my Canon Xsi (EOS 450D). I typically do a lot of landscape photography, however when I want to get a shot of some distant features this lens allows me to capture some of the details that the 18-55mm lens can't capture. I would recommend it to anyone on a budget (especially college students like me), and those who are just delving into dSLR photography. This lens can also be dificult to purchase from physical stores (had to order from an online store).

Summary: Great value for a lense for someone looking to keep photo records of fun family events/outings or someone who does photography as a hobby. Not so great for pro & day-to-day use. Image quality is definitely lacking once you get beyond 100mm with focus, sharpness, and color. Needed a longer lense in a pinch, realized quickly that I can't use this for work other than as a back up.

This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88 - 400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. This EF-S telephoto lens with great features delivers excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers.
