As good as people are saying
by elob on April 29, 2005
Pros: 64-bit architecture, very powerful search, efficient and easy to use automation features, much more
Cons: User interface is inconsistent, don't see much use for Dashboard

Summary: As far as raw power and professional features go, this is the new gold standard of computing. As a user in the legal profession, I've searched forever for the best way to organize the tens of thousands of Microsoft Word documents on my computer. Spotlight, Apple's new global search feature, has completely solved that problem. I've set up smart folders based on all sorts of criteria and the system automatically updates to find anything.
The same praise should be extended to Automator. Every day, I think of more and more repetitive tasks that can be turned over to the Mac. It's one of those features that you easily could forget you had. But if you think creatively about how it could help your work, you won't know how you lived without it.
The 64-bit architecture makes this an essential upgrade for G5 users.
I have two complaints:
1. Dashboard, though more useful than Sherlock, doesn't seem particularly compelling to me. Others may find it useful, but it doesn't fit into my workflow. That's not a big deal, of course, since there are plenty of other features that do catch my interest.
2. A more significant concern, from my perspective, is that the user interface continues to become less consistent. Safari/iTunes/Finder look one way; Mail looks another; most of the rest of the applications look yet another way. Why Apple's interface designers can't pick up on the consistency of Apple's hardware is beyond me. Still, it's much better than Windows even in this respect (and vastly better in terms the power of its features), so there's really no competition at present.
With those qualifiers, I think this is an outstanding system that is helping me to work more efficiently. Highly recommended.10 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

This changes everything.

Pros: Faster, Spotlight Search, Spotlight Search, did I mention Spotlight?
Cons: Mail, while still in good working order, clashes with rest of GUI.

Summary: Apple's latest is definately worth the money. Spotlight will, without a doubt, change the way you work, from finding documents, to opening programs, it makes everything truly easier and faster. Dashboard is a great plus. Though nothing necessarily groundbreaking, it is nice to have all that info without having to move in a web browser. The best improvements are going to be the ones that you don't see with improved security, stability, and speed. My only (extremely minor) complaint is Mail's graphical update. While I don't mind it by itself, it does not fit in with the rest of Apple's programs visually. If they all were changed it would be one thing, but Mail now is the 'odd man out' visually.

Massive speed boost for 5-year-old hardware!
by Peter Barrett on April 29, 2005
Pros: Slicker, faster, Mail interface right, Dashboard cool
Cons: QT7 blows away QT6 Pro key

Summary: This is a great update that makes my 5-year-old Sawtooth feel new again. FCP HD seems to run flawlessly in it (bring on FCP5!) and a mere 1GHz upgraded CPU feels like a G5! Might retrofit my old 400 and see what that's like... all the responsiveness we had with OS9 is back!

Good upgrade, even for Panther users.
by Chiatzu on May 1, 2005
Pros: Speedier and feature packed. Improvements made inside and out.

Summary: I backed up my Mac laptop and performed an upgrade over my existing install. Spotlight did its thing to index the drive. I've noticed snappier response from my 1.25Ghz G4 PowerBook (15" and lovin' it). Permission checking which was a bit of a dog on Panther, is noticeably faster in Tiger. I've experienced an overall better feel than Panther on my well-worn hard drive.
Spotlight is incredibly fast and with the help of smart folders will make data easier to find.
The new widgets are nice, but having used Konfabulator they are little more than eye candy to me. Yet, some users will find them extremely useful and are there if you like them.
I've only begun to "scratch" the surface of Tiger, but given time, I intend to take a very close look at Automator. This is the one feature that really caught my interest. Scripting for the masses, IOW. How many times I have wanted to have an relatively simple way to do a series of tasks, without learning a script language, but couldn't. Apple heard my cries of anguish and I will accept the challenge.
In Safari, top-notch RSS handling and faster performance for browsing the web. Not to mention a new 'private browsing' feature. This isn't anything like Anonymizer disguising your IP, it's an as you browse "cover your tracks" of normally stored browser data.
A few programs didn't play well with Tiger, but that's normal. Check the web site of the program for Tiger-ized updates, if an update is necessary. Be extra careful about using utility programs made for Panther in Tiger, such as backup and hard disk utilities. Tiger is different under the hood and older programs won't back up all of your data properly.
There are other things I don't have the time or space to touch on. Suffice to say I'm pleased with Tiger thus far and glad I made the upgrade.4 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

The Best of Apple, the Best of Computers
by eat on May 11, 2005
Pros: Beautiful, simple and easy-to-learn functionality

Summary: It's the best OS available, and it requires the best hardware available. No problems there. The only problem I've found is that the new HD codec (H.264) only works on certain G5 computers, not on my 1.67 GHz G4 PowerBook, even with the added RAM and upgraded GPU. In the four years now that I'v been using Macs, I have never experienced a crash, a virus, or even the slightest freeze. Like Apple says, "It just works."

Tiger leads today's future

Summary: This is the best OS I have ever used. I got my first mac, a mac mini, on 4/29 when tiger came out. the mac mini is the cheapest one you can get, the 1.25 GHz base model. Tiger works smoothly on this miniscule mac with meager allotments of ram (256 MB). This OS provides a more interactive interface than WINXP (which is crap). The dock and widgets are cool, and spotlight is integrated with the finder bar, which makes it easier to search for something. I plan to upgrade the hard drive and memory to make Tiger work as smoothly as possible. I tried to open the mac mini, but to no avail. If you have a good tip as to where to insert the blade to pop the mini open, please comment** thanx

Pleasantly surprised...
by DoBoy on May 3, 2005
Pros: Lives up to the hype and is noticeably faster than 10.3 on a G4
Cons: Partially broken (for now) Virtual PC, occasional blank Inbox in Mail.app
Summary: As a recent convert from Windows, I viewed Tiger's claims of "better performance" on older hardware with a high degree of skepticism (see: any Windows upgrade).
Forgive my ignorance, ...Summary: As a recent convert from Windows, I viewed Tiger's claims of "better performance" on older hardware with a high degree of skepticism (see: any Windows upgrade).
Forgive my ignorance, old habits die hard.
My girlfriend immediately noticed that everything was faster on my 12" Powerbook G4 without having to tell her I had upgraded the OS.
The widgets in Dashboard (especially the weather and phone book) are nice, but I still mourn the loss of Sherlock (or Karelia's Watson). As more widgets become available, I'll get used to Dashboard.
Mail seems to be much more polished and the Exchange setup is easier, though setting it up to use Exchange/AD to get the addressing auto-completion was a 2-day fight. The fix was to point LDAP to my domain controller's Global Catalog at TCP/3268 instead of Exchange's LDAP at TCP/389. I have a bug where my Inbox root folder will go blank on occasion (no set pattern) requiring me to close and reopen Mail to refresh the content.
Safari is faster and the RSS features are nice, but I'm not sold because it's still unusable with some of my key web-based apps (work-related), Firefox shares a similar browser id string (Mozilla-based, etc.) so I'm not sure why Safari doesn't work with those apps if Firefox does. So, I choose to use Opera 8 instead because it seems to be faster than either Firefox or Safari.
My biggest gripe is that Tiger broke the virtual switch for Virtual PC 7 for Mac. It also absolutely dogs the client OS (Windows 2000) almost to the point of unusability right now. I expect a fix soon, but this shouldn't have happened in the first place. Virtual PC for Mac isn't exactly a rare/obscure application.
All in all, Tiger is a worthwhile upgrade based on the performance improvements alone. The eye-candy (Dashboard, Safari, etc. ) and improving connectivity with Active Directory is all gravy.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Some evolution but a some revolution too
Pros: Several key features that add real value to home user

Summary: This is no Panther upgrade. Spotlight, Dashboard, Automator, Safari RSS...all these features significantly increase the value of a home PC by making getting email, working with files, surfing the web, etc. simpler, faster and more elegant than with previous Mac OS releases. (Certainly more than the alternatives.) I think the only downfall of this release is that people with PC's will to wait 18+ months for similar features with Longhorn.

Summary: I AM A SWITCHER!!! I have been a PC Loyalist for many years, and I have become a MacHead. There is a reason for everything they do. This upgrade will add very usefull tools like spotlight. If spotlight is integratged into the system properly, which it probably is knowing apple, then it may just save you seconds when they really count the most. Like during a business phone call, when you need that one piece of information from excel but you just cant remember where it is exactly. You can just type in as much as you can remember and it will give you what you need. Im hoping this will be an upgrade worthy of the cost because im not used to this in the windows world. But judging by how well OS X 10.3.8 (A.K.A. Panther) works then OS X 10.4.? should be worth the price.
