- Bottom Line:
- Apple's new wireless Magic Mouse gets a sleek makeover and even has multitouch controls, but it's better as a portable laptop companion rather than a full-size desktop accessory. The swiping gestures add interactivity to Web browsing and media, but the awkwardly narrow single button design leaves us reaching for better mice from Logitech and others.

The good: Sexy design; vertical scrolling works like a physical scroll wheel; pairs easily with Mac computers; ambidextrous.
The bad: Awkwardly narrow profile; doesn't work with Windows PCs; laser sensor not as advanced as Darkfield and BlueTrack competition; horizontal swipes don't feel as natural as thumb buttons; can't customize swiping functions; no pinching.
The bottom line: Apple's new wireless Magic Mouse gets a sleek makeover and even has multitouch controls, but it's better as a portable laptop companion rather than a full-size desktop accessory. The swiping gestures add interactivity to Web browsing and media, but the awkwardly narrow single button design leaves us reaching for better mice from Logitech and others.

Almost as bad as the original "Hockey Puck" mouse
by MacTechG42 on January 7, 2012
Pros: It comes "free" with new Macs
It uses common AA batteries and can use rechargables (free hint, buy four rechargables, keep two on charge and two in the mouse, swap them once a week)
It gives you a "taste" of Multi-Touch GesturesCons: Horrible ergonomics, it's too low profile and has very little grippable area
no tactile indicator of the "up" position, 50% chance of holding it upside down
Missing some Multitouch gestures like Pinch/Zoom and Rotate
It feels cheap and insubstantialSummary: I've been a Mac user since 1984, I've worked as an Apple Authorized repair tech, and I've used almost every incarnation of Apple hardware, and let me ...
Summary: I've been a Mac user since 1984, I've worked as an Apple Authorized repair tech, and I've used almost every incarnation of Apple hardware, and let me just say that the "Magic Mouse" is right down there with the worst of them, right down there with the infamous Hockey Puck iMac mouse, just like the old Hockey Puck mouse on the original CRT iMacs (Bondi Blue and original "Colours" tray-load CD models), there is no tactile indicator of which direction is "up", there's a 50% chance of using it upside down the first time you use it
I got one with my new 21.5" iMac i5 2.5GHz, and hated it from the moment I first laid hand on it
it feels cheap, cheesy, and plasticky, it's too slim and low profile to get a decent grip on, within ten minutes, I had reconnected my old Kensington Expert Mouse Pro USB corded trackball to the new iMac (I love that trackball, it's outlasted at least five computers) and relegated the Magic to be used as a glorified scrollwheel, as it's multitouch scrolling was excellent, the only commendable thing about it
(then again, I'm biased towards trackballs and trackpads anyway, not a fan of mice)
Today, I replaced it with an Apple Magic Trackpad, which *IS* worth purchasing and highly reccomended, in fact, I can see the Magic Trackpad becoming my primary input device, oh I'll still keep my Kensington Expert Mouse Pro corded trackball and Apple Extended USB keyboard connected to the iMac, as I'm not completely sold on wireless, battery powered input devices as my only means of input.
There are just some situations when you *NEED* a corded input device, like when booting into the Boot Manager and the computer hasn't even loaded the Bluetooth drivers yet, at that point, wireless input devices are useless, as the computer doesn't even know they exist yet
so, to wind up and stop rambling;
Magic Mouse BAAAAD! Do Not Want!
Magic Trackpad GOOOD! well worth owning
Backup USB keyboard and mouse/trackball GOOOD!, always good to have backup hardware, just in case.... -
magic or just a trick
by eccybut123 on December 18, 2011
Pros: this thing is a pretty ,sleek design and has awesome touch controls ,scrolling clicking and swiping are all made easy by this compact device
Cons: compared to MS Bluetrack technology the movement of the mouse on a surface is too rough and shakes occasionally on the screen due to the movement , also on my 27" iMac it takes a lot of momentum to push the mouse to the other side of the screen
Summary: the mouse tries too hard to be a trackpad instead of a mouse , the movement is too rough and juddery and the aluminium bottom cover is a scratch magnet

The Magic Mouse is environmentally irresponsible.
by Jasperonymous on November 16, 2011
Pros: I can't find any.
Cons: The Magic Mouse has connectivity problems. It goes through two batteries every ten days or so. Apple refuses to offer a credit or refund - or, indeed, to even acknowledge that we've complained to them several times.
Summary: Apple should discontinue the Magic Mouse on the grounds that it is bad for the environment (it uses two batteries every ten days or so and still has connectivity issues ...
Summary: Apple should discontinue the Magic Mouse on the grounds that it is bad for the environment (it uses two batteries every ten days or so and still has connectivity issues when around other wireless devices). Apple should offer a refund or credit to those of us who care enough about the environment to have purchased a new mouse, which was foisted off on many of us with our computer systems. But, as I'm discovering, what Apple should do and what Apple does are entirely different things.

one word: SUPERFAIL!!
by ggdebgg on September 13, 2011
Pros: I keep looking....
Cons: This thing's a veritable slug!!! Trying to do a silo in photoshop or scroll thru hundreds of pages with placed art in Indesign is a nightmare. It lags behind and can't keep up, I almost deleted a job because the mouse was just not 'with' me. The swiping

Most natural feeling ever
by Count Boni on August 29, 2011
Pros: Multitouch is superb, accurate and natural feeling, I can hardly work with an "older" mouse now
Cons: No middle "click" button, there is scrolling but no middle click, that's the only thing I miss.
Summary: If you have a Mac, it's a must, I just wish Apple updates the OS to provides us with middle click, specially for CAD apps or video games.

Simply the best user interface.
by john_l_uk on August 27, 2011
Pros: Simplicity and elegance - if you are happy to use a laptop trackpad then this is the biggest trackpad you will ever use but with gestures familiar from the iPad and iPhone.
The whole surface is clickable - click on the right for a right mouse click. TwoCons: Only available for MacOS X.
Summary:
For some reason my review for the Magic Trackpad has been added to the Magic Mouse topic - I hope somebody can fix it!

Nearly Perfect
by NickyBeavers on July 29, 2011
Pros: Good looking, sleek, works like a charm, easy setup.
Cons: Sometimes when grasping it tightly it registers swipes that aren't supposed to happen. Somewhat expensive.

Summary: I love this mouse, it is the best apple mouse I have ever owned. It retains left an right click (right click is available in the preferences), yet many finger swipe gestures are included, an get this: it feels natural! Scroll is the most noticeable feature, one, two, three fingers, it works and it works perfectly. Side swipe is equally satisfying, and with lion it is even more integrated with the operating system and core applications.
Only con is that if you grasp the mouse tightly, the side of your hand may register inputs on the mouse, but this rarely happens.
TAKE NOTE: This is NOT a gaming mouse. For everything else, however, this mouse works flawlessly. If you can get it for a cheaper price than that on the Apple Store, do so. -
Smooth, slick and comfortable, now that Lion is out!
by mohanman on July 27, 2011
Pros: Lightweight, multiple function, its comfortable, I like the click.
Cons: Maybe not the most comfortable mouse
Summary: Not a bad option, especially now that more gestures are available with Lion

Great Mouse! Beautiful and Precise! love multitouch!!!!
Pros: wonderful style and design and works very well. never lags or has any connection problems. love how it connects through bluetooth, and multitouch is the most amazing part. It really makes everything feel immersive. I recommend this mouse to anyone.
Cons: After a while of use, it tends to get uncomfortable for your wrist.eventually got used to it, but the first week:painful on the wrist. lacks a few multitouch gestures that are on the trackpad such as the 3 and 4 finger gestures(Expose, Show desktop)

One outstanding mouse, especially for a Mac!
by cale239404 on June 10, 2011
Pros: It tracks very well! The mouse is very accurate. It is also highly customizable.
Cons: Occasionally, you can scroll with the touch feature, yet not mean to.
Summary: It is great, but too expensive. I would recommend this mouse to anyone with a Mac.
