The good: Customizable weight and sensor resolution let you tailor the feel of the mouse to different activities; 2,000dpi maximum-resolution laser sensor provides the highest sensitivity available.
The bad: Designed for righties; only one thumb-side button.

It is like going from dial up to broadband.

Pros: Very fast , and never skips and works on any surface. Not wireless.
Cons: Right-handed only. Annoying ridge on the right side of it. Bad color scheme. Uh, price.

Summary: I was amazed when I bought this yesterday. My old MS optical mouse officially crapped out, so I bought the most high-end mouse at the first store I went to as I was sick of going through mice. It is really nice. All of the features in the review above work well. It is not only good for gaming, but great for Photoshop, etc. Who would have thought that a mouse makes that much of a difference? I actually am swapping the mouse to my two computers because it is that good. I don't think I will lay out another $60 U.S. to get a second one, though. The price is a bit much. The whole adjust the weight thing is silly, too. I can't decide if I like it better with full weight or without the tray even in. Oh, and it has a light on the bottom by the weight tray in case you need to change it in pitch black. What? It is very nice to be able to change the sensitivity with the click of a button. That is a great feature, as is the long ass frabric cord (I hate wireless mice). But the thing is expensive.

Summary: after i destroyed my Mx518 during a fit of gaming rage, i decided to try the G5 Logitech. the G5 is even better than the G5. my main gripe w/the Mx518 was it lack of weight, as i have always liked a heavier mouse. that's why i love the weighting system in the G5. one thing i miss though, is the side forward button. i had all my buttons on the 518 set to a function on my games; i really miss it on the G5. also, some of my games, even the new ones have trouble recognizing the G5 for some reason; a problem i never had w/the 518. overall, an excellent mouse; definitely worth the $55 i paid for it.
btw: the only thing that kept this mouse from a perfect 10 were the missing side button and the hideous finish....3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great mouse for FPS games

Summary: This mouse is great for playing First-Person-Shooter games. You can change the sensitivity and it has customizable weight so that you can get a personalized gaming experience. But the major flaw is this mouse does not work with some mouse pads that usually works with ordinary optical mouse. For example, when used with Icemat Mouse Pad, this mouse will not recognized any movement. Also, when used with a mousepad without a smooth surface, this mouse will give a weird mouse pointer movement. (In my case, my mouse pad had a coarse surface due to the fact that I like friction. But this mouse did not work on it)

G5 Gaming Mouse - Not Up to Par for Gamers

I have been playing video games for about 6 years now. I've had my share of mice. My first mouse was a Microsoft Intellimouse which worked wonders. It had the mouse wheel and the side buttons which I needed. When that broke, I upgraded to the Logitech MX510. Another great mouse. It had the mouse wheel and the two side buttons I needed. I went through plenty of those and then changed to an MX518 as technology changed. Once again, a great mouse. Unfortunately, I switched to the G5 when my MX518 broke. The only pros I see in the 518 are it's DPI LED that tells you the sensitivity you're at as well as the durability of it. It is a strong mouse. If you drop your MX518 it will break, not the same for the G5.
Unfortunately, if you are a video gamer, I would not get the G5. First of all, with all the new games coming out, you need to bind so many keys to so many different commands. The G5 takes away one of the side buttons on the mouse leaving you with just one. I was disappointed in this. Even worse, the mouse wheel is an absolute piece of trash. I play Call of Duty 2. I use the mouse wheel often and quickly during play. I push the mouse wheel in to reload my weapon and I scroll up and down to change weapons. Something must have went wrong at the Logitech factory when designing this mouse wheel because it's either way too sensitive or just way too stupid. If I try to reload my gun, I will most likely end up changing weapons. Maybe it's the fact that they implented the side scroll. But honestly, no person in their right mind needs a side scroller unless you're a damn secretery and even then, why would you need it?
Would I buy this mouse again if it broke? Hell no. Unless Logitech fixes the mouse wheel on this mouse, I will probably buy another MX518. And please...why would you take the second side button off the mouse?2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

If you're not into gaming, consider Logitech MX610 laser wireless as alternative.
by techgal27 on February 26, 2006
Pros: Better tracking than Optical Mouse, comfortable grip.
Cons: Bigger than average mouse, only one button not two for forward and reverse on browser; complicated to customize; cord does not lay smooth.

Summary: I bought this as a replacement to an optical mouse that died wanting better tracking. Although comfortable, it is a larger mouse more suited to bigger hands. Tracking was not extra-ordinary. The nylon cord got in my way with my laptop. It doesn't lay smooth like the traditional vinyl mouse cords. After a month of using it, I happened to test a Logitech cordless laser mouse - smaller, forward and back button as well as e-mail button, and small USB base.
I came home and used both the G5 and MX610. The cordless laser MX610 tracked better than the corded laser G5. And no problems with also having wireless. My G5 went to my nephew who is into gaming. If you're not into gaming don't get the G5 laser. Logitech offers a better alternative in the MX610 laser.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I use AutoCAD, and had been using an optical trackball for the last couple years, and it finnaly died. I really like being able to change the nouse speed on the fly, really helps when you are zoomed in and zoomed out. Works great on my desk surface, and feels natural in my hand. Buttons are well placed, just would expect a forward button a mouse such as this, but oh well.

Summary: A while back I bought a MX1000 with the intent on upgrading from the MX510. For web-surfing the MX1000 was a more flexible mouse. When I used it for gaming or pixel-by-pixel graphics editing the MX1000 was an exercise in frustration. The MX1000 went back into the box, and the MX510 was back on the PC. Now here comes the G5.
When used for gaming and editing the G5 is extremely accurate. Unfortunately, the G5 lost three function buttons and a functional wheel button. This made web surfing a chore in comparison. The end result was I ended up pulling out the MX1000 of the box again. Both the MX1000 and G5 use the same SetPoint Drivers/Control center. Fortunately, moth mice can be connected at the same time. My G5 is now weighted the same as the MX1000, and each is being used for specific applications. I can only hope that Logitech will build a corded MX1000, or at least a Laser MX510.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Teh 1337 of mice

Summary: This is the most amazing mouse of all time. I just replaced a Kensington Optical Elite, by no means a bad mouse, but this... Wow. While the Kensington was nice ergonomically, this fits your palm like a glove.
The dpi changer is great both in and out of games: in Battlefield 2, you become a krazy tank pilot with 2000 dpi, or a better sniper on 800. In a photo editer, you could choose 800 for precision, or 2000 if its not something you need at the time. The three-light screen also does a good job showing you exactly which dpi you're on, and the buttons are positioned conveniently.
Another nice feature: Logitech's software gives you five customizable dpis, as well as a hotkey for the button on the side of the mouse. The scroll wheel has a nice feel, jutting out so that you're scrolling with precision. It can also be pushed left/right, which can also be programmed. The clicky-ness feels just rite, and the front mouse buttons also fit, your hand well.
The included weights can make this mouse feel like a plastic toy, or an expensive heavyweight, depending on how you like your mouse to feel. Not important, you say? While it may seem like an apparently useless feature, it can actually make the mouse much more comfortable. Finally the mouse itself looks beautiful, although mine has an orange tint, unlike the grey one shown in these pictures.
The Good: Comfortable beyond belief, dpi changer, customizable weights, customizable side button/scroll wheel, included Logitech software is easy and effective to use.
The Bad: This mouse is for right-handed people only, lefties won't be able to hold the mouse comfortably. Check Razr's competition for an almost-as-good ambidextrous mouse. The inclusion of only one side button wasn't great either.
In Conclusion:
Buy this mouse. Its now only $50,(check out newegg.com) making it much more of a bargain. Every single feature of this mouse was designed perfectly, and I would buy this mouse again in a heartbeat.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I upgraded the mouse from MX510 and so far quite satisfied with its improvements. Currently, I'm using it as my desktop mouse in pair with the dell 2405fpw high res LCD. I have to concur, I finally felt the sense of swiftness after upgrading from the MX510 800dpi mouse to the G5 2000dpi mouse, extremely precise! I do a lot of Photoshop works, the preciseness helps a lot. I liked the grip feel, however, my hand felt a little bit warm after several hours of use ( This is pretty much I missed from the MX510, this mouse won't make me sweat ). I also liked the idea of adding the weight adjuster, especially I prefer heavy mice. So far I have no problem tracking with any of the surfaces that I encountered with. One of my desk was pretty glossy, and the mouse have no trouble at all.
Lacking a few buttons from its predecessors, I would say this mouse might not suitable for some office productivity applications. But still, tracking ability accounts for everything regarding a mouse, and the Logitech G5 indeed, tracks extremely well, especially useful for high resolution screens. You will notice the difference with the resolution larger than UXGA ( On my SXGA IBM laptop, I felt the mouse too fast for my taste). I would recommend this mouse to anyone who does a lot of picture retouching jobs.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

The last mouse you will need.. until G9 comes out ;]
by naisanza on January 8, 2006
Pros: Moves like silk, fits and feels great in your hand, laser sesor, on-the-fly dpi changer, looks leet, tilt-wheel, adjustable weight, and has the Logitech logo.
Cons: One thumb button

Summary: From ball mice to my first logitech optical mouse, to mx518, G7, and finally now G5. I have to say that every step from the previous mouse is always up. Though from the G7 to G5 it was fairly level. The only drawback to the G7 was the ~8 hours of usage before needing a fresh clip. Although, the glossy coating on the G7 feels so nice there is only one issue with it; moist hands = this wierd feeling.
Mostly because of the glossy coating is why i decided to make the jump, well more like in a downward direction since it's from a 7 to a 5. But for fps gaming it was def a big thumbs up.
The reason for the jump to laser is (well obviously its LASER!) my trouble with the tracking on the mx518. On the same mousepad the G5/G7 can track extremely good where the mx518 cannot. At a sensitivity of.. one the mx518 is unable to keep up with the fast constant flicking of the mouse(in CS:S).
I was very pleased with how well the G5/G7 satisfied my gaming needs. Even though the new razor has the same laser technology and has two thumb buttons the G5 is still my fav mouse to use because I like how it fits nicely and fully supports my large hand where as the razor design is for people who uses their fingers to aim rather than the whole hand.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
