- Bottom Line:
- Usually we're fans of Logitech's gaming mice, but its highest-end G9 Laser Mouse is expensive, overly complex, and lacks the ergonomic thought we've come to expect. If you like to brag about dot-per-inch limits, perhaps the G9's 3,200dpi laser will be enough to sell you, but for the price, we expect the design to match.

The good: Customizable weights and grips; most sensitive laser sensor available; flexible configuration software; free-spinning scroll wheel.
The bad: Grip attachment and weight kit hardware are too convoluted; inconveniently designed buttons.

Simply the best
by Shadow II on March 20, 2010
Pros: Size, shape ,feel and button locations
Cons: None since you can get it for $30.00 now that the g9x is out.

Summary: I have the g9x and g9, can't tell the difference except if the g9x lasers DPI is set way up. Normally I agree with C-NET but they missed it on this review. The DPI switching button location could not be better. Set and forget or seldom change buttons and the weight change system are in the right place. I don't change grips, so if it takes two hands to do that when necessary thats not an issue. Great choice by Logitech. Save money get the G9 unless you have really quick reflexes. 5000 vs 3200 , I can't use it that high. The g9 can be picked up for $30.00 now

Summary: This mouse replaced the long used, and beloved MX518, and honestly the mouse is the only one on the market that is a true upgrade. It has a host of features that make it the little marvel that it is, but ultimately what matters is how it feels and how it plays in games as well as day to day use ... which it does amazingly well.
Overview -
I'm going to deviate from the Cnet guys and say that the improvements made to the G9 over previous Logitech mice with weight systems are actually a good thing. You do have to remove the body of the mouse before you can adjust the weight to your liking, but that's not an inconvenience for me, as once I found the weight that was right for me I never had to change the weights again. The decision to hide the weight change system under the body gives the mouse a smoother appearance, as the weight cartridge doesn't break up the lines of the mouse. As for the shape of the weights, I don't even really see what their complaining about. Also changing bodies on the mouse is easy, and I think the button that releases the body is well-placed as it prevents you from accidentally removing the body in-game.
That said, the precision of this mouse is unbeatable. At the highest settings you may find the mouse unwieldy, simply because it's so sensitive at the highest levels. When I first booted up and loaded the software I hated the fact that "three light" setting on the mouse was way too high for any application I would use. However within the software you can change the different DPI settings for each on mouse level, so after a bit of playing around I have the mouse customized to my preferences. I have a different setting for FPS's, MMO's, and web browsing, as well as a much lower setting for guests that use the computer and find the mouse too sensitive. Honestly I never even expected to utilize as many DPI settings as I have, but once you get used to it it's hard to imagine living without it.
The mouse 4 and 5 buttons are both easy to reach, and the 4 button is about 1/3 smaller so if your hand somehow slips out of position you can easily feel, without having to look, which button is which. Another nice touch. The mouse wheel button actually felt much too stiff when I first started using this mouse, but now I appreciate the different feel over that of the MX518, as I avoid any unintentional button presses. The wheel itself is very precise, and features a microgear switch at the bottom of the mouse which will allow the wheel to spin very quickly. This mode is good for paging through long .pdf or other documents. The placement of the button on the bottom of the mouse is also a smart design decision, since I only need to use the microgear feature in specific situations it's nice to have the button somewhere where it won't add to button clutter.
The feet on the base of the mouse are also very slick, so any drag you may have experienced on older models has been done away with. Even after months of use, after the mouse has collected dust in the grooves on the feet, the mouse still feels super slick on the mousepad. Not sure what material was used to make this possible, but the effect is truly amazing.
All of the other bells and whistles are nice, from the customizable LEDs to the on board memory for profile storage, but I've found that I don't ever actually change these settings. Setting up your mouse right the first time practically eliminates the need for multiple profiles, but I can imagine scenarios where picky players would find some utility in this feature.
Final Thoughts -
This mouse is, in every imaginable way, superior to my MX518. It feels good in my hand, stays slick on the mousepad, is amazingly precise, and is endlessly customizable. If there's one complaint I have, and I always have to have one, I just wish the mouse were better incorporated with the G15 keyboard. Being able to see which profile is active, just in case, on the LCD screen of the keyboard would be dope ... but that's really not even a flaw. You absolutely must try this mouse to see how revolutionary it is. It's perfect.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: After I saw the Cnet review, I was alittle nervous in purchasing it. Seeing other owner's review, I decided to give it a shot. I previously own the MX518, G7, MXRevo <==(this mouse sucks btw). So after I returned the MX Revo, I decided to go back to corded since my room are having some problems cordless products. I didn't want to get the G5 since its pretty much the same as my old G7. I picked the G9 and loved it since (Just bought it today btw). Even with my small hands, I am using the large grip which is more comfortable. All the 4 buttons are easy to reach which is very very important as CNET said the buttons layout sucked. I need all the buttons for games damn it
. The wheel is nice but I am still using the traditional mode on it.
It has all the quality of a good mouse.
Looks cool, feels excellent, accurate laser, easy to reach buttons BUT there is one down side to this. Since the outer shell is interchangable, it does jiggle when u lift up the mouse. A simple scotch tape under the shell and bang, its fixed and feels nice and firm. Personally I really don;t think a $100 top of the line mouse should require scotch tape to reinforce...... but what can u do.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

so, after awhile, i've really warmed up to this mouse, i upgraded from an optical mouse and i can really get precise, compared to the optical mouse, sniping at long distances on bfbc2 has become fun, instead of frusterating; before i always couldnt get right where i needed the scope to be, it would either end up too much in one direction, but the DPI really REALLY makes a diffence.
I like it.
Major Upgrade from my optical p.o.s.
i dont like how it has unnecessary venting on the sides.
i dont like how the grip doesnt cover the whole mouse.
and the buttons for the thumb are placed a little far back for easy use.
I love the speed. This things FAST.
Love the customize ability.
The mouse wheel is ******* too...
Updated on Apr 29, 2010
and i stand to my word, good mouse, could use more grips, and the thumb buttons could be further forward, and that would make this thing a HELL of alot better. -

Summary: This mouse is an incredible mouse. It feels very comfortable, more so than and other mouse i tried, and when cnet says grip changing is a hassle, thats total BS. Grip changing is so simple, it takes less than 10 seconds to do it. Also, the weight changing is very simple and not cumbersome at all. And by no means are the buttons inconviently designed, I find ti very easy to use all of them.

Outstanding mouse, great options and feel
by 7dee on May 16, 2008
Pros: Profiles, accuracy, design accomodates my hand very well
Cons: Steep for a mouse...
Summary: very comfortable unit that has enough customization and management options to satisfy anyone. I wish they'd push the grip replacement thing even further.
The ability to switch mouse config ...Summary: very comfortable unit that has enough customization and management options to satisfy anyone. I wish they'd push the grip replacement thing even further.
The ability to switch mouse config presets and sensitivity on the fly is just a great feature which I use all the time when switching between games and even working/gaming.
CNET, I visit your site for nearly any piece of gear I'm interested in, but please, get die-hard users to review die-hard gear. Under more than one circomstance have I noticed that top-in-class gear got the same time put into the review as any other mid-line device.
Second... the grip and weight you choose are, apart from tryout, simply definitive, so why compromise any functionality to somehow 'make it easier to remove the grip or change the weight'?
Anyway...
The ability to customize the width and well... anything is for me, a breath of fresh air from the preious slew of oversized, overly ergonomic (nearly forcing your hand into a position) mice. And yes, I am comparing mainly against G5 here, since the statement that the G9 would not best it is, for me, a false statement.
I do agree on the side button placement thing, kind of. It somehow feels like they are too far to the back, but my fingers are quite long. Still, it took only minor time to adjust to this. The feel of the side buttons is not as crispy no, because of a lot of key travel. this is because the detachable casings include the buttons, so they need the travel to contact the mouse body.
Apart from that, all other controls are where and how they belong imo.
Pick one up yourself, or better, borrow it from someone and use it all day. Then switch back to your G5 or diamondback and notice just why the G9 is sharper in all aspects.
Thanks for reading. -

Summary: My previous mouse was a Razer Deathadder, and a lovely thing at that. When it came time to upgrade and hand down, I opted for the G9, and by god I love the little bugger.
While it took some getting used to the size (the Deathadder is a HUGE mouse, nearly half again the length of the G9), I adapted quickly enough. The only thing that bugs me at all is the thumb buttons; my Deathadder had nice, resistant, loud side buttons, while those of the G9 are, by comparison, quite soft. Still, that is a minor issue at worst.
The build quality is divine, the buttons responsive, and where some users claim to have experienced 'wiggle' in the snap-on grips, I have experienced none. The custom-colo LED for the DPI display is bling, but it's cute enough to count as icing.
Yes, friends, this mouse is a dear, and it's a dear that you can color as you please. Totally worth the money.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Logitech
- Part number: 910-000173
- Description: With the corded G9 mouse, gamers can enjoy interchangeable grips, on-the-fly dpi switching ranging from 200 dpi to 3200 dpi, full-speed USB laser tracking, an onboard-memory profiling system, weight tuning, a custom-color LED and the hyper-fast MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel, which was introduced last year and is exclusive to Logitech. To help gamers get the best fit, the Logitech G9 mouse features a wealth of customizable features, including two interchangeable grips: Wide-Load grip and Precision grip. Designed to deliver comfort even during the longest gaming sessions, the Wide-Load grip provides a fuller shape and soft-touch, satin feel, while the Precision grip's DryGrip technology and compact shape offer fingertip control and a surer handle for any hand. For an even more comfortable feel, the G9 mouse allows for customized weight tuning and weight distribution. The innovative weight-tuning system enables gamers to choose from among hundreds of weight settings by inserting up to four additional weights in the mouse's weight tray, adding up to a maximum of 28 grams. In total, gamers can choose from eight additional weights. Using the new Logitech SetPoint software, gamers can create a number of profiles for their mouse. And with the mouse's onboard memory, gamers can take their personalized settings anywhere - it's no longer necessary to install SetPoint software on the gaming rig every time a gamer changes computers. Instead, up to five profiles - including specified keyboard macros, dpi settings and LED color settings - can be stored on the mouse for on-the-go gaming. Unlike other gaming mice that offer a range of 400 dpi to 2000 dpi, the G9 mouse can be shifted on the fly to up to 3200 dpi for faster, more precise cursor movements, or down to as low as 200 dpi for games that require pixel-precise control. A full-speed USB connection delivers up to 1,000 reports per second for smooth tracking without cursor lag Finally, the G9 laser mouse features the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel. Using a toggle mechanism on the bottom of the mouse, gamers can choose between precise click-to-click scrolling that is perfect for weapon selection, or nearly frictionless hyper-fast scrolling.
