The good: Comfortable; five programmable buttons; 1,600dpi optical sensor with on-the-fly sensitivity buttons.
The bad: Designed for right-handed users only.
The bottom line: The Logitech MX518's adjustable sensitivity, customizable buttons, and comfortable grip are sure to please right-handed gamers.
In many ways, the MX518 is a logical update to the company's widely popular MX510 performance mouse. Outfitted in slick gray and black, the MX518 boasts five user-programmable buttons; a scrollwheel; two buttons, located above and below the scrollwheel, that allow the user to adjust the mouse's sensitivity on the go; and an application-switching button (the equivalent of hitting Alt+Tab). The MX518, which connects to your PC via a USB cable, is designed for right-handed gamers only. It's extremely comfortable to use, and during several rousing Unreal Tournament 2003 death matches, we never once hit the wrong button.
While many will bemoan the MX518's lack of wireless capability, serious gamers understand that many wireless mice suffer from lag that can occasionally mean the difference between LAN party supremacy and failure. With that in mind, the MX518 sports an amazingly quick 1,600dpi (dots per inch) resolution. At first, we found the MX518 almost too sensitive, but the dedicated buttons for increasing and decreasing the sensitivity helped us find the sweet spot. In fact, during gameplay, we consistently found ourselves changing the mouse's sensitivity depending on what was happening in the game. This is one of those features that you never thought you'd want (or need), but once you use it, you'll wonder how you ever did without it.
At $49, the MX518 is fairly priced, and right-handed gamers will no doubt be pleased with its performance.

Summary: i just got this mouse yesterday and i already see a huge difference in my gaming. i've mostly played CS:S with it and im already shooting more accurately and therefore, getting more kills. this mouse felt alittle weird at first but now fits perfectly in my hand. im disappointed that the software for it isn't compatible with Windows 2000 but at least it comes preset with 400, 800, and 1600 dpi so i can adjust the sensitivity alittle. i dont know if ill be able to handle 1600 dpi because that's pretty extreme, even 800 dpi is pushing it but at least i kno i can go that high if i really need to do some serious twitch-gaming. overall, great job logitech on an amazing mouse that every gamer shouldn't be without.

A previous generation mouse that's better than most of the current generation
by DP76211 on January 26, 2006
Pros: Very comfortable and egromatic; many extra buttons; nice response; Sensitivity switching; application switching; extra buttons are easy to reach; relatively long wire; supports pretty high 1600DPI
Cons: Right-handed only; optical rather than laser; doesn't support 2000DPI (which is a little much anyway)
Summary: Though the MX518 is a mouse of the previous generation of gaming mice, it is much better than most of the mice of the current generation.

The MX518 is very, very comfortable, and never annoying or straining to use. All the buttons are well-placed. Its comfort is where the Razer Copperhead fails, the latter not being very egromatic at all.
The MX518 has two extra buttons for games and applications, and sensitivity switching/application switching buttons. This is where its successors, the G5 and G7, fail. The G5 and G7 lack a second thumb button and an application switcher.
The MX518 is an optical mouse; therefore, it will not be exactly as accurate as the current generation but will definatly be accurate enough. It supports up to 1600DPI, which should be good for FPS's. Though the current generation (excluding Microsoft's offering) supports 2000DPI, 2000DPI is a bit too sensitive for most cases, anyway.
If you don't need an application switcher (which most don't) and a second thumb button (which less hardcore gamers don't), definatly go for the G5 or G7. If you want a flashier mouse with as many buttons as sensible, go with the Razer Copperhead. But if you want a great mouse with great potential for gaming and normal use and great comfort, look no further than the MX518.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is a great mouse, but it is priced way too high, and if i could i would return it for the 510, which looks better anyway. I also wish they lit the buttons up on this mouse, they would look much better.
Anyway it moves very easily, it has more pads than most mice, it is very comfortable, and it looks cool with the shiny covering and random patterns. I have not found the sensitivity adjustment to be that useful in games, but it is nice to have it there incase i need it. The software is subpar, and i prefer to just use Windows to adjust settings.3 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have the MX500; which is basically the MX518 w/o the cool color; mine is a plainer silver; i spend many hours picking out the right mouse; and this has a great response time... a lot faster than my old hp mouse; i found my skill in first person shooting games went up quite a bit when i got this mouse with a much better refrest rate. It has two conviently located buttons on the left side for forward and back...which i use on web browsers all the time. Then it has a good speed continuous speed buttons below and above the scroll wheel; bottom line is that this mouse cannot be beaten by any other wired mouse; this is the BEST!!!

Summary: As far as mice go I could never get better ergo's from any mouse.......this is it for me.....the holy grail if you will of mice ergo's........but thats all this mouse has going for it....
The quality of the electronics aren't as up to par (quick and accurate)as the Razer I had to buy when this thing went bad the first time.
I'm a hardcore UT guy....and this mouse has yet to fail to let me down. Now on my third MX518 (Warranties)and the left button has failed once again....so frustrating.
I could also never use the software....it did nothing but mess things up. Thankful I didn't need the software but it would have been nice to have.
....I swore I'd never rely on a Logitech mouse again.....but the ergo's just keep me coming back....Razer has great quality....but the ergo's are designed for an 8 year girl.... I.E. to small and dumb button placement.....so I'm stuck with Logitech.....Just noticed the G7 so I may try it.....but I also noticed that they changed to just having one thumb button??!!?? Why can't they just leave whats not broke alone and fix what is broke.
In case mouse makers are reading this........STOP CHANGING THE ERGO'S AND BUTTON PLACEMENT.....PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE HAVING TO RELEARN ALL THAT JUST FOR YOUR MARKETING GAME.
The only reason it got a four is for the ergo's.....
I'm in mouse heck.......arggggg2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

MX 518 > G5 > G7. For a cheap price, you get a high performance mouse.
by QuickShortReviews on May 8, 2008
Pros: Easy and smooth to track, Adjustable DPI on the fly, Cheap, Lightweight, Plug and Play, Good precision, comfortable grip, 2 thumb button instead of one (G7, G5)

One of my friend who bought a G7 complained that it was too heavy to his liking due to the batteries that were under the mouse.
The MX518 is Light weight, making it so much easier to glide and comfortable with the right hand grip.
It's so easy to install as it is plug and play, making it noob-proof.
MX518 also allows you to adjust DPI on the fly. It's really irritating to exit a game specially just to change your DPI.
2 thumb buttons are also available for great experience of web surfing and added unfair advantage in games; specifically for additional game control binding (e.g. reload, switch weapon)
However, the only setback is that it's for right hand users and would take a while before left hand users (my sister) can get used to it.
Sidenote: One of my friends tried the MX518 drivers and it did not work on a MAC.
My Take: Definitely one alternative to consider if the G5 and G7 is not within your budget, provided you're fine with the 1600 DPI. My best investment for fragging on Quake.

Not reliable for gaming
by Elilirien on September 20, 2009

Summary: I bought this mouse a few weeks ago because I was looking for a few extra buttons to use with one of my games. I did NOT want or need the dpi settings. I installed the software and the mouse became very "laggy" while in game regardless of what dpi setting I used. I tried configuring it every way possible and it still lagged out on me. I uninstalled the software and still laggy. It works fine for web browsing and in game away from any action buttons but it's useless for actually playing with.
It's also called an 8 button mouse but there are really only 2 extra programmable buttons for your use. The 2 extra buttons were nice but the lag is just unacceptable.
This mouse also seems to have been made for a man with very large hands since it fits my boyfriend well but doesn't fit me at all. As a female gamer I'm used to products not quite fitting me but this one was ridiculous. I'm unable to reach the front thumb and the dpi increase buttons at all unless I let go of the mouse & lift my hand up to use them which isn't alway possible in game without killing your whole group.
I am highly disappointed and I WILL be returning this mouse. -

Summary: I'm very pleased with this mouse. I went down to my local store and bought a hp mouse for just over $40. My 2 year old Microsoft Optical Comfort was better. I went back to exchange it and bought this mouse. At the store it was $60 :S. I desperately wanted it right there and then, so I bought it. But you can get it from newegg.com for onlly $39. I'm glad I made the right choice. Buy this mouse. =)

Great mouse but could use one more button
by SkywayTraveler on February 17, 2009
Pros: The feel of this mouse is perfect for my medium-to-large hand. The smoothness of movement, the variable sensitivity and the programmability are its greatest features in my opinion. They stand behind their five-year warranty 100%.
Cons: I had to replace this model twice in two years due to the same problem, extraneous double clicking in the left clicker.
I'd like to see one more button that I could assign to double-click. I am now using the wheel-click for that feature.Summary: In summary I really like the feel and functionality over any other mouse that I have used. Best of all, you know if you have a problem that Logitech will ...
Summary: In summary I really like the feel and functionality over any other mouse that I have used. Best of all, you know if you have a problem that Logitech will stand behind their products. Try that with a Microsoft mouse or an off-brand mouse.
