  Summary: To start off, I am a casual gamer (a few first person shooters) and mainly a web and desktop user. For those purposes, this mouse is absolutely perfect. I upgraded from an older Logitech two-button scroll mouse. The back, forward, and search keys are a must-have for any internet user and the scroll wheel eliminates any fatigue that the finger might feel in surfing through long documents or web pages.
  The mouse uses two accompanying AA batteries, which adds a comfortable weight to the device. The batteries also last forever (one year to be exact), so there is no worry in having to deal with recharging batteries, recharging stations and all that extra clutter.
  The mouse has four, polytetraflouride I believe, feet that are unbelievably smooth and long lasting. Also on the bottom are a power button, the laser, and a switch to change the setting of the scroll wheel.
  The scroll wheel feels like spinning an Abec 7 bearing in both the free-spin mode and the click-to-click mode, though obviously more choppy in the latter. The wheel moves effortlessly but with precision in scrolling up and down. In scrolling in side-to-side or clicking the middle button can be slightly more difficult. Because the wheel is made to spin frictionlessly, it is difficult to press down with out scrolling down since the hand is at an angle to the wheel. I was able to solve this quite easily, though, by using the second segment of my finger instead of the tip of my index. The grip on the scroll wheels helps a ton, a definite plus.
  Wireless range is good. It works flawlessly from the other side of my room, which is about 20 feet in length. No interference from my wireless Netgear WG311 card.
  Setup was simple. I plugged the USB device in and turned on the mouse. Windows XP recognized and installed the standard human interface device and I was ready to use my mouse in a cinch. I stopped by the Logitech website and downloaded the latest compatible Setpoint software to test out. After installing successfully, I began testing its capabilities. I soon found it to be highly customizable. Every program that is launched on the user's computer can be customized with certain key functionality. So in one program, the left click can do the copy function and in another program the left click can be the cut function. Very convenient and intuitive. The problem has arisen with games and is the only negative I have found so far with this mouse. I opened Call of Duty 4 and upon clicking the center button, which I programmed to use as a document flip button as well as the look-down-the-sight button, the game quickly minimized and brought up the document flip window, without zooming down the sight of the gun. I reopened the Setpoint software and checked on the option to detect games. This only affected the search button, which was convenient but not what I wanted. I have yet to find a solution to this problem.
  Overall, I absolutely love this mouse. It eliminated all the wire and drag from my previous corded mouse, and it is amazingly comfortable. The mouse is oddly not very popular compared to the MX and the VX revolution even though it shares all the same features except a zoom toggle in the case of the VX and an extra scroll wheel in the case of the MX. A definite recommendation. The mouse does what it is supposed to and nothing less. This is the first product review I have written and that is why. A very polished product.
  Definitely buy one if you have the chance. I managed to snag one from Sam's Choice for $30.00.

  Summary: I'm only focusing on the scroll wheel here - the rest of the mouse appears to be fine, but like a lot of people I use the scroll wheel very frequently. There are 3 settings for the scroll wheel, hard ratchet (microgear), softer ratchet & free spinning. On all modes the scroll wheel feels cheap. The ratchet modes vibrate the entire mouse and consequently feels very tacky. The free spinning mode has a very flimsey feel to it - but here's the worst part of this mouse (and for a mouse that costs around £40 it's staggering). When the scroll wheel is in free spinning mode (considering how tacky the ratchet modes feel I think most people would be using this mouse this way) without touching the scroll wheel you'll find that the document or web page you're viewing starts to scroll by itself! What is actually happening is the scroll wheel will start to turn due to the mouse itself being moved around as you navigate around your document. Needless to say this is very annoying. This mouse was plugged into my computer for about 20 minutes before I'd had enough.

  Summary: For ease of use, the mouse is overall an ok mouse. I wouldn't buy it again for a few reasons. First and foremost, the wheel lock mechanism never will stay put in the position you want it in. It constantly will move from soft ratchet or free wheel to hard ratchet. It doesn't matter. The other, and more important reason I wouldn't recommend this mouse is that the tracking seems to jump around. I bought this mouse and thought it was a single problem with 1 defective mouse, so I returned it and got another. When it did the same thing with the replacement, I knew it had to be something with the product it's self. The mouse kind of "locks up" and won't track properly and as a result if you were, say, to be playing a game, it has the potential to do not respond at the correct time. I use mine for architecture and because of the flaws it has caused in my work, I have found errors when dragging things around my workspace. Not an accurate mouse by any means if you need one. Definitely a low end mouse that is not worth the money spent on it.

  Pros: Standard Duracell Copper Top AA batteries last over 6 months with use of mouse for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I use in a call center where mouse is being moved at all times.

  Battery life is unbelievable. I do not know any product that runs on 2 x AA batteries used 40+ hours a week to last more than 6 months.
  
  The mouse is very comfortable in your hand.
  
  It does not come with drivers to get the mouse working. I have plugged it into a work station at my job and did not require installation of any drivers.

  Summary: I've owned a ton of Logitech products and they have always been great. This mouse however has a serious flaw. The scroll wheel scrolls by itself in free scroll mode!! Imagine you are scrolling a webpage, emails, whatever and as you lift your finger off the scroll wheel... the scrolling continues for a moment and then goes back in the other direction before finally stopping in a different spot than where you expected. Yes you can use the ratchet mode and it doesn't do that but I previously owned the notebook version of this mouse which did not have the same issue in free scroll mode.
  
  I am using this on a Mac, and haven't tested this behavior on a PC yet.

  I forgot to mention that in addition to the free scroll issue, the scrolling has issues in ratchet mode as well. In Picasa, you cannot scroll one thumbnail at a time no matter how you adjust the settings in Logitech control panel.

  Treat yourself to a great mouse

  Pros: Solid in-hand, fast scrolling, "back" click button has ideal feel to it. Wheel material won't gum up eventually the way Microsoft & similar mice can.

  Cons: Cost. No documentation really - it works out of the box but the little flyer should mention why I should visit logitech.com/download (works with driver I have already, but I'm guessing the custom-configuration of buttons relies on theirs).

Wireless - of course, once you cut the cord you never go back. But I've tried a bunch and this one has the best feel to it. The 5-year warranty is nice & helps rationalize the cost.
  
  I don't understand the comments about the scroll wheel - maybe this is new but there's a small slider on the back that lets you set the resistance, everywhere from free-wheeling to a heavy, notchy click, with many notches in between those extremes.
  
  The MacBook trackpad is great but I may become one of those geeks who carries around a USB mouse with me (I'm already a geek, just not that kind of one =) )

  Fix the Free Wheel

  Pros: Setpoint software lets me swtich to any of my Logitech Mice instantly. Comfortable design. Thumb buttons where they should be. Can be configured for document flip. Battery doesn't need to be specially ordered when needing replacement.

  Cons: Smaller feel than my previous MX1000 Acceleration with this has to be turned off. Same as my MX1000. Scroll wheel in free mode doesn't stay still when you take your finger off the wheel.

Impossible to fill out forms or make drop down menu selections. No documentation support. Help menu doesn't accurately describe the functions and settings. After 15 minutes, I've switched it to clik clik mode. At least I can type this without the cursor and page moving on me now. I would love that freewheel if it would stay put after you take your finger off of it, otherwise this seems to be just as good as my last mouse. Never used the zoom feature so the wheel button is configured for document flip which was a must have feature for all the multitasking applications I have opened on 2 desktops.

  Excellent Mouse; Glad I Got It!

  Pros: Nice feel, weight, design. I've had a lot of mice over the last 25 years and this one, by far, is the best I've owned. It goes nicely with my Das Keyboard, which is the nicest keyboard I've ever owned, too.

  Great mouse. Goes forever on 2 lithium ion AA batteries. Nothing wrong with the scroll wheel. I personally don't like the free spinning scroll wheel so I don't use it. Nothing wrong with it except it's not for me. It certainly doesn't merit lowering my overall score of such an excellent mouse. I purchased two of them; one for home and one for the office. Don't complain about battery life if you put cheap batteries in it. You get what you pay for. Use either Duracell or some Energizer lithium batteries and they will go on and on, etc.

  Pros: Has a MicroGear precision scroll, long battery life, 6 buttons, easy to use configuration driver and Mac compatible.

  Cons: Lack of control on mouse speed and tracking on Mac OSX. I find it hard to configure it to my preference. I need it to make very small movement (for work) but the cursor either doesn't move or moves too much. Odd shape for small-handed person like me.

  Summary: I think it's a definitely more than average wireless mouse. It has great control and comfort for an average user. The software is really easy to follow (on Mac anyway). The battery life is awesome. I have been using it for over 2 months and the batteries are still 80% full. The MicroGear precision scroll is great, if you're not used to it, you'll find it hard to control or jagged feeling (as per other review) but it is MicroGear. It is how it is. The only problem with free-wheel setting is the wheel would rock slightly forward when I move the mouse. Making the screen scrolls upward slightly every time I touch the mouse. It is hard when I'm working (as graphic designer). Also, because of the nature of my job, the lack of control of the cursor is making my job difficult. Very often the cursor couldn't make small & precise movement. It takes many left-right maneuver to get it to the point I wanted. But, having said that, it's a great mouse. It just doesn't suit what I need it to do.
