Laser stopped working right

Summary: Not much to say beyond the pros/cons. This is a well built, solid mouse. It looks great and feels better. You can adjust just about everything to get the exact feel that you want.
My mouse was perfect at first, but after a few months of use (I'd say moderate use) the laser stopped registering on most surfaces - I'm not sure why. It works fine on white pieces of paper and some mousepads, but not much else. My 10 year old logitech mouse, on the other hand, registers on just about any surface.
In addition one of the side knobs fell off, but that was because I dropped the mouse. However, I've dropped my logitech mouse numerous times and nothing has broken (though it has less protrusions).
There is a chance my mouse is a lemon, but I've heard similar stories regarding this mouse so its something to watch out for. If the laser would work properly I'd definitely give the mouse 5 stars. As is, the most important feature of the mouse has issues so I have to dock quite a few stars off for that.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wow, talk about adjustable.
by Mergatroid Mania on December 12, 2010
Pros: Adjusts for any size of hand, nice feel, sensitivity and speed.
Cons: Easy to accidentally hit the side thumb buttons.
Summary: Owned MX Revolution for 3-4 years, awesome mouse but wore out buttons.
Tried: Razer Mamba - wouldn't always wake up, poor battery life, poor cable attachment mechanism.
Tried: Logitech ...Summary: Owned MX Revolution for 3-4 years, awesome mouse but wore out buttons.
I have come across a few people for whom the laser failed. My own mouse is also acting up. Twice the X axis failed completely and the unit had to be removed and plugged in again. The final straw was when we were all playing LAN games and the tracking on the mouse was acting up so badly that I ended up throwing it in a drawer and using my old Logitech mouse for the rest of the labor day weekend. I took the mouse back for RMA and the store cannot get it to act up again. This may be an exception but it's looking more and more like I'm going to end up with a $150 + taxes paper weight. The store has had it for two weeks or more. I tried it on multiple computers and could always get it to act up (lots of large movements to get a very small movement on the pointer). If I get it back from the store un-repaired, I'll have to deal with Saitek which will add shipping costs on top of this already most-expensive-mouse-you-can-buy.
Tried: Razer Mamba - wouldn't always wake up, poor battery life, poor cable attachment mechanism.
Tried: Logitech G700 - poor battery life but pretty good otherwise. Uses standard AA NmH battery.
Tried Saitek Cyborg RAT9 - just right.
Wish I had of tried: Microsoft Sidewinder X8 (looks nice).
The RAT9 is a HEAVY mouse. It comes with 5 6g weights installed and two extras, but even though I like a heavy mouse, I removed all the weights. I found it pretty much perfect with no weights installed.
The mouse comes with three palm rest attachments and three pinky finger grips too allow you to select what works best for you. The left side thumb rest can be moved forwards and backwards along with out and in, allowing for different widths and lengths. Finally the palm rest itself can also be moved forwards and back. This is pretty much all you need to accommodate most adult hand sizes.
The buttons all have a nice tactile click and good movement. Unlike some other reviewers I have no problems with the resistance that must be overcome to click the side buttons or the up/down dpi buttons.
I have not noticed any lag (although I have no other wireless devices currently running for interference testing).
I have noticed in Boarderlands that I need to make use of the dpi buttons because the pointer in menus seems to need to go faster than the actual game play. Oddly enough the same thing happened with the G700, but not with the Mamba.
The battery life seems to be between 7 and 8 hours. I can get a couple of days of occasional use or, if in an extreme gaming session, I can use the spare battery to easily swap out the used battery. I like this solution much better than the wireless/wired hybrid mouse design manufacturers have all copied off each other lately.
The Mamba is especially bad for this since it uses a custom battery AND the cable attachment system is so poor. You cannot swap out the battery at all. I suppose you could order a replacement battery for swapping but then you would have to charge it.
The Logitech g700 and (from what I hear) the MS X8 both use standard AA NmH batteries, so you could grab yourself a quick recharger and some spare rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, the NmH batteries only last about 5 hours, so have a few on-hand. The RAT9, however, comes with this convenience built into the receiver. This little unit plugs into your USB port, contains a space to recharge your spare Lithium-ion battery, and a space to store the unused weights.
Another nice addition to the mouse is the "aim" button on the side. You can program it to make the pointer move at a percentage of the current mouse speed, so you can have faster movement, and slower aiming speeds. Just hold that button in and watch all the little red "criticals" floating over your target.
For desktop usage this mouse is also pretty good. I did miss the side to side rocker function of the mouse wheel on the MX Revolution (and others) mouse, however I have been getting used to the thumb wheel on the RAT9. It feels like the adjustment on a fine caliper. Program it to use the arrow keys and you have a great side scroll function. (on my first RAT9, this thumb wheel was stuck, and after we freed it up it still would not function, so I had to return it) Watch out for Saitek support. I left a message to their support email asking how to test the thumb wheel and I still have not received an answer. Glad I didn't wait because after returning the mouse for a new one, I found the thumb wheel had a fantastic clicky feel to it, similar to the mouse wheel but finer. I would have missed out on that if they had of managed to get the defective one working.
I have read some bad things about the laser sensor in this mouse, but I haven't had any problems with it myself. I have also heard bad things about this mouse working on various mouse pads (one reviewer saying his expensive black Razer pad made the mouse go bonkers, but a white one worked). Again, I have not had any issue with the black cloth pad I use. HOWEVER, since my pad has a gel wrist pad, my hand is at a slight downward angle when gripping the mouse, and that seems to make it easy for my thumb to accidentally hit the two side thumb buttons. I'm pretty picky about my mouse, and have been a pain in the butt to local electronics and computer stores over the last week, but I have finally settled on my replacement. This mouse is not perfect, but what it does it woes well enough to be a keeper. Ok, I'll admit it, it doesn't hurt that it looks freaky too...

I really love this mouse so I hope this problem gets resolved.
Updated on Jan 14, 2012I had to RMA the mouse, and now the new RAT9 is acting up again. I think it's some type of interference, but I can't be positive. I've given up and changed to a Logitech G9x.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: the mouse is a good idea, and the adjustable parts are cool. But the 1 issue EVERYONE i have ever seen with these mice (rat9, rat7, ect) is the sensor fails and is a very poor quality for a gaming mouse. and when you are playing a fps and you are forced to fight with a mouse for control over what you are doing....lets just say you just use another mouse. I made this account to warm people that yes this is a good mouse but for REAL computer gaming DO NOT choose this product.

Great with small flaws

Summary: This mouse is pretty much a logitech g5 that you can shift all the parts on, it feels about the same in quality, but yeah, it's nice to be able to customize. I slapped on the larger pinky rest and thumb rest and my hand never touches the mouse pad...I really like that :)
The sniper button seems really hard to use, and I have big hands, it's just awkwardly placed.
I use my thumb when I'm moving my mouse as well, so the thumb scroll seems awkward for a gaming mouse, as I can't actually move the mouse while scrolling.
Aside from that I have to make sure my mousepad is clean, the laser is very sensitive so if it's not it can wig the mouse out, but overall I really like the mouse, if it's in the budget and you want a gaming mouse I'd recommend it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cons: The price is a bit hefty. Would be nice if it came in different colors like red to match my Alienware R3.

Summary: The optics of this particular mouse are so sensitive that it registers the smallest movement at the highest DPI setting however it also registers and is confused by even minor reflections at ALL DPI settings. What this means is that the device DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY on nearly all gaming surfaces, some do not even register.
What ends up working best is actually a piece of white paper. Paper makes a terrible surface however has NO reflections so it appears to work better.
If one where to remove the reflection problem from their gaming surface the mouse works FANTASTIC. Here are steps to eliminate reflections from your gaming surface so that you come to love your new mouse instead of wanting to hurl it out the window. Please perform this at your own risk, damage to ones property is of course ones own fault. This work with any gaming surface which is comprised of a hard plastic. Do not attempt with other materials.
Test subject - rocketfish gaming pad (2 sides)
1. Take a GREEN scoth brite pad (NOT A GREY ONE!!!) and lightly press and rub in a circular motion. You want the mouse to see the scratches NOT you so do not press hard. Do this untill the mouse registers the surface properly. Reflection is nolonger a problem however now your surface is full of scratches causing undesired drag on the mouse. The surface is still bad.
2. Tear the metal top off an EMPTY plastic bic lighter, the metal can scratch and ruin your surface.
3. Turn the lighter on its side and press the smooth rounded plastic in a smooth straight motion scross the gaming surface applying a liberal ammount of pressure. Repeat untill you cannot feel any roughness on the surface. If you go to far you may have to use the scotch brite pad again.
The ridges of the added scrathes are now smoothed off so the mouse glides as smoothly as before however the indentations from the scratches are still there so the laser is sufficiently scattered as to prevent reflections.
Hope this helps someone, the materials on most gaming pads are just too reflective for this device. -
Sub-par Laser
by rveldpau on May 28, 2012
Pros: Nice design, great customization options. solid feeling
Cons: Laser stopped working properly. I read another review on this site and it said that it still worked on a white piece of paper, so that's what I'm doing now.
