- Bottom Line:
- Microsoft's SideWinder X8 isn't the only mouse that can swap seamlessly between wired and wireless modes; however, between its BlueTrack sensor and its on-the-fly macro recording capability--not to mention a competitive price--we imagine few PC gamers won't want to get their hands on it.

The good: Hybrid wired/wireless design eliminates downtime between battery charges; BlueTrack sensor expands mousing surface options; easy on-the-fly macro recording; 4,000dpi maximum.
The bad: Scroll wheel needs a better grip; signal drop-off in wireless mode at high sensitivity.
The bottom line: Microsoft's SideWinder X8 isn't the only mouse that can swap seamlessly between wired and wireless modes; however, between its BlueTrack sensor and its on-the-fly macro recording capability--not to mention a competitive price--we imagine few PC gamers won't want to get their hands on it.

Very good mouse, does the job well
by thewunderbar on June 5, 2009
Pros: wireless, long battery life, good thumb buttons, on the fly DPI change and multiple sets of feet ensure good customization
Cons: very big, scroll wheel not fantastic, no battery charge indicator
Summary: I've been using this mouse for a month, and it is very high quality, and the best gaming mouse I have ever used.

The reviewer did make an error though. The wire that connects to the mouse supplies power only, no data is transmitted. Thus, there is no hybrid "wired or wireless" mode. All data is transmitted wirelessly, while power is sent through the wire. Except for that point the review is good, and spot on on all the points.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Doesn't work if you use WiFi.
by nanite2000 on February 13, 2012
Pros: Comfortable fit.
Cons: Interferes with WiFi signal, wrecking it's usability.

Summary: The mouse shares the same wireless frequency as Wifi, regardless of whether it's plugged in or not. So if you use a wireless internet connection, expect poor performance from both your mouse *and* your internet connection. The mouse will be jerky under heavy internet load and/or your internet connection will slow to a crawl.
Furthermore, the blue light that is heavily promoted for this product (which is supposed to work "even on wood!")(which it doesn't by the way) is actually worse than the older red lights used on previous mice (which worked perfectly well on wood).
Do yourself a favour - avoid this poorly conceived (but nicely packaged) product. It just doesn't work. -
Mouse wheel breaks, scrolls up or down randomly
by DavyBoyWonder on December 5, 2011
Pros: - good for those with bigger hands
- great for when it works
- magnetic power connector makes charging the mouse easyCons: - mouse wheel broke in less than 9 months, now mouse will scroll one more "click" even though you have stopped scrolling, about 5 to 10 seconds after your last scroll
- feels slightly cheap on the build qualitySummary: sure I can send it in to Microsoft for a refund, or a new mouse, but sending it in costs money that Microsoft won't reimburse me for, and what ...

Looks good, but not worth it
by rlkp on August 10, 2011
Pros: blue-tracking is really accurate, there are 3 speeds which is useful or on the fly switching DPI speeds, nice placement of macro and forward/backward buttons, has a wired/wirelss mode where you can recharge solely by using the "puck" that comes with it.
Cons: only 1 thing..... the recharging contacts for most people become defective within the first month or two. that means you will now have to manually change the batteries yourself so its a bit of pain...
Summary: no longer in production for a good reason, I would pass it up unless you're willing to switch the batteries every so often. otherwise gr5eat bang for your buck

NOT left handed!
by Lensman_1 on February 21, 2011
Pros: The mouse is well built, works flawlessly, the scroll wheel is just fine and the dpi switching is superb.
Also I had a charge from flat via the cable in less than 12 minutes.Cons: There is zero chance of any left handed user, as I am, using this mouse. The design is so right handed as to be almost an insult. The back/forward buttons are exactly where a left handed users little finger sits and the bosy is not grippable.
Summary: A very nice mouse that works flawlessly IF you're right handed.
Change the design slighly Microsoft to allow left handed users to use this item too and we'll ...Summary: A very nice mouse that works flawlessly IF you're right handed.

by killer-mm3 on February 2, 2011
Pros: Fits my hand perfectly, perfect weight, can track on almost any surface, there arent any unnecessary buttons in the way.
Cons: Its hard to get the tiny amount of dust that gets stuck in the hole at the back of the mouse.

Not as good as the Logitec Revolution
by svenist on August 28, 2009
Pros: Recharge method.
Response time.
"Instant" DPI change.
Looks like it could eat your mom & still have room for the rest of your enemies.Cons: Button configuration is limited.
Configurable buttons are limited.
Not ergonomically designed.
Charging station is clunky, making it bad for laptops.
Scroll wheel doesn't free spin.Summary: I own this mouse and the Revolution and, quite frankly, the Revolution makes this mouse look bad.

First, it is more ergonomically made for the hand, which is a big deal when you play for long periods of time. Second, it has many more options for customization where it counts: buttons. The thumb wheel (3 buttons in one), the regular left / right clicking buttons, the ?application? button (top center), the additional front / back thumb buttons, and even the left / right scroll buttons can be customized to basically whatever you want (10 buttons total). By contrast, the sidewinder has limited configuration on a total of 4 buttons. That?s pretty weak by comparison.
The Revolution does not have DPI change, which is significant, especially if you play shooting games, but this makes no difference in any other type of game.
I can appreciate the charging method of this mouse (vs the docking method the Revolution uses), but unless you regularly play for 14+ hours at a time, you shouldn?t have any problems keeping the Revolution charged.
Oh, and after you get used to a ?spin? smooth scrolling scroll wheel, you?ll never want to go back.
Finally, the Revolution works with both my Windows machine and my Macs, whereas the Sidewinder is Windoze only.
Don?t get me wrong, I like my Sidewinder, which is clearly superior to any other mouse I?ve had ? with the exception of the Revolution, which is priced the same. Sorry Sidewinder, you lose. -
Doesn't Live up to the Hype
by Vulcannomad on March 28, 2010
Pros: Lithium battery and charger, additional feet. Programmablilit when it works.
Cons: Mouse Wheel, terrible, forefinger slides off of wheel, wheel get stuck, anything but smooth rotation. Customization doesn't stay, you have to keep re-initiating it. Programmable side buttons rarely work.
Summary: If Microsoft would make the wheel smoother and less "ratchety" and it doesn't hang up, this would be a great improvement. I have small hands, and it seems like ...
Summary: If Microsoft would make the wheel smoother and less "ratchety" and it doesn't hang up, this would be a great improvement. I have small hands, and it seems like a reach for the wheel and the over-all grip is on the large side.
