The good: Smooth performance; comfortable to hold; five configurable buttons; includes magnifier feature.
The bad: Range of wireless reception could be longer; diminished feature set on a Mac.
The bottom line: The Microsoft Windows Optical Mouse 5000 is a straightforward, reliable mouse for basic home or office productivity.
The $40 Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 5000 (WOM 5000) is comfortable to use (for the right-handed, anyway) and offers a simple but useful assortment of features and niceties. Sure, there are less expensive options out there, but we like the WOM 5000 enough to recommend it to anyone who wants a straightforward, reliable mouse for basic home or office productivity.
Almost identical in design to the Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader--just without the fingerprint reader--the WOM 5000 has a cool two-tone, gray color scheme. A right-handed reviewer found it fairly ergonomic and comfortable. The soft plastic sides provide a smooth and comfortable resting place for the thumb and the last two fingers. The two thumb buttons are well placed--comfortable to click, but not so convenient that you'll hit them by accident. The rubber four-way scrollwheel is easy to grip and move, and we dig the horizontal scrolling capability; however, the scrollwheel doesn't click or provide feedback in any way when you roll it; we sort of missed the tactile response.
Setup on our Windows PC was simple. First, we popped in the two included AA batteries; Microsoft claims they'll last for six months, but we did not test this claim. Microsoft recommends installing the software before connecting the mouse, so we did. It took a minute or so, and even though the PC threatened that we'd need to restart, we didn't, and it didn't seem to matter. When we plugged the mouse-shaped receiver into a USB port (a PS/2 adapter is also included), Windows recognized its kindred hardware immediately, and we commenced mousing. Setup on a Mac was a bit slower and more complicated: we had to install software, and configuration options weren't as plentiful.
Once you've installed the software, the Mouse control panel displays the battery level and the signal quality, lets you adjust vertical and horizontal scrolling settings, and offers configuration options for all five buttons--you can choose from 30 preset actions or have the button launch an application. The WOM 5000's other interesting feature is its magnifier. Click one of the thumb buttons, and a square box appears onscreen, magnifying its contents about 2.5 times; for those who work with huge spreadsheets or on high-resolution monitors, this feature could be truly useful; we became bored with it in about 11 seconds.
When we kept our mouse and receiver within about nine feet of one another, the WOM 5000's performance was very good; going any farther than that brought our mousing to an end, so the WOM 5000 might not be the ideal choice for a big conference room. The mouse's 1,000dpi (dots per inch) rating--about average for mice in the $40 price range--delivered smooth, precise, and uninterrupted performance. Gamers who require a higher dpi and more programmability options should look to the slightly more expensive Logitech MX518.
Microsoft offers a three-year limited warranty on the hardware and free phone and e-mail support for the first 90 days--after that, support will cost you $35 per request. Online self-support, downloads, and updates are also available via Microsoft's support Web site.

Very satisfied

Summary: Based on the reviews here, I would not buy this mouse. That's why I'm glad I didn't read them before I picked this up. I had to replace a pretty bad Logitech one, and this was on sale at Best Buy.
The only bad thing I find about it is the middle button. It's hard to click, and when browsing, using the middle click is imperative for me. Luckily, the excellent management options for the mouse allowed me to map the middle click on to the large thumb button for just Firefox and Internet Explorer!
A cool feature about this mouse is Instant View. You can click the scroll wheel and it will show you all of your windows. Like how you can see all the tabs in Internet Explorer. I had never seen this feature in XP, so I was impressed.
I think the other reviewers were biased by Micro$oft's often bad rep. Honestly, this mouse is high quality and a good one to choose. Don't rule it out.
I'll close out on the scroll wheel, because it's true there's no tactile feedback. It took awhile to get used to, but now I actually like it better. It just kind of glides, and it feels really nice. And the speed of the scroll can be adjusted per preference, just one more great feature.
I'd definitely recommend this mouse for the average to power computer user.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wish I had spent more money on a better mouse

Summary: I purchased this mouse because it had the feel I liked and was wireless AND it was on sale. I wish I had spent more for a better Logitec unit. I don't really like the smooth scroll wheel. I am used to the click feel of the Logitec. Also, it will work great for a short while then for no reason become jerky and pause for a second or 2 and the only way to get it working is to push the reset button on both mouse and transmitter. I have to do this at least twice a day. I have put 3 sets of new batteries in and it doesn't help at all. I have had to move the transmitter to within a foot of the mouse. Any farther away than that and it will stop working. I am going to purchase a Logitec as I have never had trouble in the past with those units.

Compatible with my wireless keyboard--sort of
by HiF|yer on October 29, 2008
Pros: I didn't need to install new drivers. The mouse found the dual receiver and paired up painlessly. It was purchased because the scroll wheel on the mouse that came with that keyboard, 3 years ago, had worn out. Very happy not to have technical issues.
Cons: No directions or information on what to do if you have a dual receiver and a keyboard. I have no magnifier capability because I can't change receivers or my keyboard won't work. Should probably have shipped with a dual receiver and the new drivers.
Summary: Just a fine little simple 5-button mouse that replaces my old worn out 3 button model. Microsoft has kept the change over easy but incomplete...can't use the new ...

Great mouse if it works

Summary: I purchased this mouse in early November 2006. At first, it worked great. It felt nice in my hand. I liked the smooth scrolling of the scroll wheel (although I wonder why mice manufacturers don't give us scroll buttons instead). The tilt wheel was a nice feature. I didn't really consider the two left side buttons to have any value, but they didn't get in the way.
Around christmas, the mouse died without warning. No matter how I moved it, what button I clicked or how much I scrolled, the computer did not respond to the mouse. I verified that the batteries were good; I verified that the wireless signal was strong; I unplugged and replugged the mouse; I uninstalled and reinstalled the software; and I rebooted the computer. Nothing could get it working again.
I returned the mouse to the retailer for another one of the same model. Earlier today, after using it for about two months, the same thing has happened. The mouse is just dead. Consequently, I cannot recommend it. -
Not too bad although could be better

Summary: Overall, I'm satisfied with this mouse. I haven't experienced the problem of being stuck in "stand-by" that other users complained about. Seems to come right out of standby with no hesitation. I miss the "clicking" feeling that my previous scroll wheel would give. My only big complaint is that when "middle-clicking" the scroll wheel, it is very stiff and hard to push down. I have 3 of these mice and they're all the same. With the new IE7 browser, middle-clicking is a must. I also find the left side button a little hard to click too but hardly use it anyway.

Good feel, but slow response
by makxsh1mum on May 12, 2006
Pros: Perfect fit for a normal right hander, lots of customizability

Summary: This mouse is available at a good price. Definitely has a very good ergonomic feel for my right hand. Buttons function nicely. Scroll button is nice and large and the 5 button customizable setup is a definite plus. What i was very disappointed with was the lack of sensitivy of the vertical scroll, which you can change, however, even at the highest level, it was delayed in reaction. You can literally scroll slowly and the page won't scroll. The mouse forces you to scroll rapidly in order to get anything done. For someone who reads a lot of articles online, this is a major drawback. Another problem i encountered was problems "warming up" the mouse after i step away from the computer for a period of time. I don't engage in sleep mode, but it takes a while (and sometimes even a plug/replug of the usb port) in order to get the mouse to function again. And in some cases, i've had to restart my whole computer just to get it to function. Granted this is my first time using this mouse and i have not returned it for another one to test.
Updated
I had the intellimouse explorer optical (corded) mouse and loved it. Needed a new one and therefore i bought this one. Now that was the ultimate mouse and had large back and forward brower buttons (not like the standard small ones on all the new models), and the scroll was top notch. -
A $10 Mouse glide better then this

Summary: The Design is bad... can't open to test the feel. the twisted design of mouse suppose to contour to fit human hands... somehow this one is either over-twisted causing the wrist and finger to rest in a very uncomfortable pose while using. Extended usage will cause further problem in wrist and other osteo-related problems. Should be design to fit our hand and not contour our hand to fit the contours!
Tried to bear with the design and get to work with it. First thing to realize is the gliding of the cursor is not sensitive to the movement of the actual gliding of the mouse. It jerks regardless the physical mouse glide across the mousepad at different speeds.
Previous to shift ur cursor to a specific point on the screen is the BASIC REQUIREMENT a mouse suppose to meet. Have problem to slide the cursor across the screen to the title bar of a window in the middle of the screen. Either the cursor 'OVER-GLIDE' or 'UNDER-GLIDE'. and the title bar is consider a BIG target area for the standard mouse cursor. Tested with Different mouse's speed and Acceleration on/off. Same problem. Require to do work wrt graphics & multimedia... this is intolerable (suppose even normal surfer cant stand it)
Thus be it surfing on Browser or Window Explorer, to aim and click at a particular file or hyperlink text is frustrating. bye to the days with one click and hit target, got to hit a few clicks before targeted link is hit.
Plug back my faulty mouse (with sometimes stuck mouse key) ... its works better then this brand new mouse. what an irony...0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
