The good: Inexpensive wireless mouse; three programmable buttons; ambidextrous design.
The bad: Poor wireless range; software not included in package; not completely comfortable.
The bottom line: The Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 is a basic and inexpensive mouse that will serve left- and right-handed users alike. But anyone in search of extra buttons or special software should look elsewhere.
To start using the Optical Mouse 2000, you need only to insert two AA batteries into the bottom of the mouse and plug in the wireless receiver to a free USB port. Microsoft's IntelliPoint software isn't included in the package, but you can download it from Microsoft's Web site. This software adds a tab to your regular mouse control panel. From there, you can select the left and right buttons as well as the scrollwheel and customize them from a list of functions and tasks.
In our tests, the Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 wasn't completely comfortable, but its flat, slightly molded shape is ambidextrous and fits both hands better than the Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 does. The Optical Mouse 2000's red optic sensor reads 1,000 dots per inch, which is average for today's mice. This sensitivity level is adequate for nearly any task--only gamers and graphic artists would need a more precise mouse. In our tests, we didn't experience any cursor lag or tracking errors. We were, however, disappointed in the mouse's wireless range: Microsoft rates the Optical Mouse 2000 with a six-foot range, but we only got four feet of good reception.
The mouse comes with a two-year warranty. The included manual lists support phone numbers and directs you to Microsoft's support Web site, where you can search for FAQs and helpful articles.

It's going back

Summary: I bought this mouse as a wireless combo with a MS 1000 wireless keyboard. I replaced a great Logitech wireless combo that worked great for about 3 years but after too many cigar burns and beer spills it was time for something new. The MS Keyboard is OK. Not special but does the job. But the mouse is junk. The worst is scrolling. I have to turn the wheel forever to get it to respond. I have Windows 7 and sometimes when I scroll it shows all of the windows as if I pushed-in the scroll button. The mouse has an old school shape which is OK with me but it's old technology being sold as new in a wireless combo dated 2009 on the box. I really like the keyboard. Too bad the mouse stinks.

Only works on cardboard surface
by Zeffig232 on April 16, 2011
Pros: Works on cardboard
Cons: Doesn't work on anything else, outdated and clunky design, heavy, and scroll wheel too rough

Summary: I bought this mouse as part of MS Wireless Media Desktop 1000. The keyboard is functional, but the mouse is absolute junk - an old-school cast-off repackaged to look new. When first installed, the mouse pointer jumped around erratically, or moved sluggishly or not at all. Often, I tried to click on something and had to click three times before I hit the target, because there just isn't any precision. I was clicking all around the icon instead of on the icon. The scroll wheel feels rough and you can feel the CLICK, swoop, CLICK, swoop, CLICK reverberating into your fingers. Quite annoying. Since I never had any problem with my other Microsoft mouse, a MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000, I did some experimenting and discovered that the MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 doesn't like my table, nor does it like black poster board, or dull red plastic, or a regular Dell mouse pad. Strangely, it works acceptably (but not great) with a piece of cardboard as its mouse pad. If you can't stand an imprecise mouse and don't mind changing batteries relatively frequently, buy the Bluetooth-based MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 instead, which uses a much more accurate tracking technology (I think it is called BlueTrack or something like that), looks more modern, and feels more elegant than this outdated piece of junk. As long as its laser area isn't clogged with dust or cat hair, the MS Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 works on every surface I've tried it on, even smooth glass.
UPDATE: Doing some further research, I learned that BlueTrack does NOT use Bluetooth, but rather uses a wide-angle blue LED and 2.4 GHz frequency to communicate with the nano-receiver. I saw "blue" in the name and assumed Bluetooth connectivity.

Also, Microsoft 2.4 GHz devices *may* be interchangeable. In other words, if buy an MS 2.4 GHz keyboard-and-mouse combination package with a single shared USB tranceiver, and you love the keyboard but can't stand the mouse (or vice versa), you might be able to simply swap in another MS 2.4 GHz device that you do like. I haven't been able to confirm this, but I've read a few posts on other websites where users report having done this. -
Zoom pops up with no way to turn it off
by raineyamcdonald on May 18, 2010
Pros: Performs the general mouse functions correctly most of the time
Cons: The mouse zooms in (zoom window pops up) occasionally with no apparent way to turn it off. There is no extra button to bring up a zoom window or turn it off. Microsoft has no documentation and wants $35 an hour to look at the problem.
Summary: Extremely frustrating. When it malfunctions the only way (other than paying microsoft to help troubleshoot a defective product) to fix the problem is to shut down all my windows and ...
Summary: Extremely frustrating. When it malfunctions the only way (other than paying microsoft to help troubleshoot a defective product) to fix the problem is to shut down all my windows and reboot. That in itself can be difficult with a zoom window taking up most of the screen and often being in the way of actually closing a window.

Summary: I have had this ever since circuit city closed down. I got it really cheap. When i got home to use it i plugged it in and it worked but it would not scroll correctly. well with no returns at circuit city i was screwed. so i thought. Anyways i put it in a closet and never got it out until today when my gateway mouse screws up (over 3 years old) i got it out and it still has the same problem. so i looked it up and it said change the batteries and it will work great! so i did and now its great. i love it

Piece of Junk
by Ihatenadyasuleman on February 22, 2009
Pros: yeah, it's wireless. that's about it.
Cons: went through 2 AA batteries weekly, randomly stopped working.
Summary: this product was a piece of junk from the beginning. it is inconsistent and goes through more batteries than anyone could reasonably afford. I give it a negative 50 billion.
