Pros: keeps camcorder audio recording away from potential unwanted camera noise

Summary: The external mic does not improve sound acquisition in the slightest, but it does allow the mic to be away from the body of the camera. That practically eliminates camera noise such as tape advance, zoom, or inadvertant starting or stopping recording noises. Basically, what you get is the same recording ability of the camera, just moved up about two inches. The biggest disappointment came when you purchased the DCRHC90 and found out that the external mic means only this choice, and you are stuck with essentially an on-camera mic. If your plans for both the camera and the mic include excellent sound, you will be forced to place the camera very close to your subject to get it, I tested about three to five feet. You will not be able to attach a wireless or regular cabled mic to the camera which is a shame on such an otherwise great camera. It is a proprietary mic connection, and this is the optional mic choice, take it or leave it. I wish I had left it.
