  good directional mic

  Pros: ignores most behind the camera noises (or at least reduces them)

  Cons: not much better than camcorder mic on what it DOES pick up

  Summary: got this mic to do some interviews after realizing the camcoreder mic picked up extraneous noises and had a sort of low buzzing sound when turned up. with this mic, the volume of the interviews didnt change much but the extraneous noises and buzzing was cut out quite a bit.

  Sony ECM-MSD1 Camcorder Mic

  Pros: Capable of excellent sound recording. Good size, long battery life.

  Cons: Picks up too much motor noise from the camcorder. In fact, every time you touch the camcorder, the vibration is picked up by the mic. In quiet passages, this is unbearable.

  A good cheap microphone

  Pros: I love the size of this thing, it is pretty compact. The wind screen that comes with this works pretty good. The audio this gives is light years better than the mic on my Sony handycam. This jack work on my Olympus digital recorder also.

  Cons: There is no battery indicator light to confirm it is on. I just shot my sons 4th birthday and the battery was dead and I didn't know it! Now I have 45 minutes of video with no audio.

  Summary: Good microphones cost a good amount of money. The one draw back, the battery indicator light not on this unit is small enough to say that I am very happy with the performance I get for the $60 I paid 3 years ago for this. The battery does last a long time. The multiple use out of this between the video camera and my portable voice recorder really stretches the value of this. I am fairly happy with this product. Still a little chapped about it not working for my sons 4th birthday party, but a mic check would have solved this problem. I WILL be doing that in the future.
