The good: Inexpensive media; well-designed desktop software; stores a lot of music on each cartridge; slick Sony design.
The bad: Terrible interface; awkward controls; small, low-resolution LCD; plays only Sony's proprietary ATRAC files; extremely slow file transfers; beeps when playback is paused.
The bottom line: Sony's latest MiniDisc player, the entry-level MZ-NH600D, shows improvement. But we encountered too many usability issues to recommend it wholeheartedly.

not bad of a hi-md player, software is awful

Summary: Well, its not a bad player, sounds not too bad if you know how to adjust the EQ right. Makes quite a racket when it reads the md though, sounds like its straining most of the time. You can use it to store files, but try putting big items like movies and stuff because it'll read it forever and if you leave it in there too long it seems to not be able to read the md anymore so you'll have to reformat/initialize it. However even with all its little imperfections I would really like this player if it wasnt for Sonic Stage. Problems always occur when I use it even after mulitple reinstalling and rebooting. It takes way to long to import music into the library and locks up now and then when i transfer music. Because of sonic stage, I will no longer be getting any DAPs from them until they realize their software is crap and that their excellent products dont deserve such **** software.

Great Sound! No Microphone Support!!
Pros: Compact, x-tra long battery life, adequate anti-jog mechanism. Instant Chat support.
Cons: No Microphone Support!! It's just a storage unit--an expensive, compact CD case. I'm selling my brand-new unit on eBay this week to buy something more versatile.

"beeps when playback is paused", no, this is wrong
u can disable it in menu
if u wanna record, then pay more to have one that can record
and, it can be used with the existing remote control u have(only sony ones)
and the best advantage of this unit is its reading ability
not like the previous years of MD player, this unit's reading ability is really very very very good! -
Simply Perfect

Pros: Great sound, long battery, unlimited storage, small, light, sleek design, cool and easy to use controls (love the jog dial!)

Summary: I thought it was finally time to replace my Irock 520 32MB mp3 player. I looked around, but I couldn't find anything that really suited it, especially in my price range of under 90 bucks. So I talked to one of my friends and he recommended a MiniDisc Player. So I looked them up and I was impressed. I ordered the MZNH600D and I am blown away by it. Long battery life, GREAT sound quality (at 48kbps!), unlimited storage, sleek and small design, and very easy to use controls. I love the jog dial wheel, makes it very easy to flip through large numbers of songs. Anyone who has a large library of songs to flip through will quickly grow to love this jog wheel. I currently have 230 songs on the 1GB disc it came with, I still have over 655MB left. And you can hold a total of 675 songs per 1GB disc, and for 6 bucks a pop, thats an awesome deal, unlimited storage! I bought a five pack of regular discs instead though for only $6.25 ($1.05 a disc). Each disc holds 300MB, about 200 songs. Dispite what I have heard about ATRAC, I love it. ATRAC3plus sounds fantastic, even at 48kbps, which is the minumum rate and I use it. The LCD is great, you see everything you need and the song/artist name scroll across the screen so you can see all of it. I couldn't be happier. And best of all this thing was only 80 bucks, and with ipods as much as 300, this is a steal.

Summary: I own Sony MD-NH700 which I bought last year and now wish I had waited. The interface is good and I like the scrool wheel and nipple but there are way better options out there now even from Sony. I have never used the record function (though I still might) or changed the 1gig disc at all (no need). Also way to expensive for a unit (in Canada). If you want to record on multiple discs its fine but otherwise look elsewhere, I'm already am.

100x download speed??? Almost Great, Backlite Please!!!
by rollad_nolium on August 24, 2005
Pros: I have had this unit for about 3 months now and I really like it. Very afforable($100 - $150) 25hrs on 1 AA battery wow! 20+ hrs on a MD 56 hrs on a 1 Gig MD!
Cons: No backlite!!! You HAVE to read the instructions to use the features. Some of them would be difficult otherwise. Fragile be very careful with it!
Summary: There are some definite downfalls that make me want to slap the person that designed it. With such a small screen and print on it, illumination is a no brainer. ...
Summary: There are some definite downfalls that make me want to slap the person that designed it. With such a small screen and print on it, illumination is a no brainer. I read alot of reviews before buying this thing and one complaint is slow download speeds. The product says 100x faster. I have a really good computer and the download speeds very. I can fill a gig MD in about 15-45 min! It depends on the format you choose to download it in. The smaller the bit rate you choose, the longer it'll take. I hate the fact that it has to convert it to it's own format. If it could playback MP3 without the convertion, downloads wouldn't be an issue. If you don't have a good computer this thing could tick you off.
I got this because I was looking to buy an MP3 player, but found this instead. Cheap Removable Memory!(MP3 you have to delete data to put more on and do it with a computer) Massive storage! 1 Gig MD $7.00 5 MDs for $10.00 campare to Memory sticks/cards 128mb $20+ 25hrs on 1 AA Battery! There aren't many devices out there that you can fit 2 full length audio books on. This is a great device with definite room for improvement. I do however recommend this MD player. -
Decent sound, good price

Summary: I bought this player for $40 off the clearance rack at Target. It was a good decision as my Creative Labs Nomad Zen Xtra died and I was w/o my aresenal of tunes! My main purpose for this player is to load a disc full of songs and put it on shuffle in the car (played over a Belkin FM modulator). My IPAQ (H2200) sounds like crap this way. The Zen Xtra jukebox sounded great.
Setup was ok - intalled the software and registered trouble-free. Then, I imported my large library of music into SonicStage. THAT took a LONG time!
Copying files to the MD Walkman was slow. First, selecting the files to copy was tedious. I found that it's easier to select them in MY LIBRARY view (so you can see all of the song data), then click on TRANSFER.
The transfer process is SLOW. The packaging of this player is misleading. It led me to believe that only WMA files needed conversion to ATRAC3plus. Not so. EVERY file I had selected was first converted to ATRAC3plus (I picked the middle quality option - 64kbps). After conversion it's copied to the mini disc. I was able to load up 671 files and had 66MB left over. This was easily more than 1GB of music in original MP3 format (most are recorded at 160 to 225 kbps VBR). I was concerned that they'd sound crappy...
I took the player to my car. Turned it on and played some tunes (can not running). Surprisingly, the sound quality was almost as good as the Jukebox! Apparently, the file conversion from MP3 to ATRAC3plus didn't cut the sound quality very much. I noticed the sound is a little less crisp and highs aren't as good, but once tha car was running and on the road I couldn't tell the difference. Volume is good and bass is good.
So, it's not as great as my jukebox was but it's working, sounds good, and I can expand my collection easily. Even a normal MD recorded in HI-MD mode can fit over 10 hours of music at 64kbps - roughly one third of a 1GB disc. For my purposes, it works great. For $40 - how could I complain? -
Overall not too bad, but still can be better
by u8myfoood on March 13, 2005
Pros: 1 gig mini disc, n the ability to store things other than music in it
Cons: the battery life is shorter than regular md's, and quite bucky compared to other music player on the market
Summary: not bad overall... sound is alrite, but styll sony can improve sum stuff

Updated
Md's are expandable unlike the CRAP ASS ipod... which is a load of shyt cover by modiocre advertisments, and md's, though only uses atrac format, which has better sounds than mp3 at low bit rates arent that bad. who ever says md's suck are the idiot who never had one and only thinks it suck because they dont kno shyt. Md's are cheap expandable media and can be used efficently as a type of media, IF sony learns to make a DECENT software to support them -
Once your set, its great...
Pros: endless capacity, good sound, relative ease of use, portability, no skips...
Cons: keeping track of your MD disks.
-
Cheap media, huge storage, brand name, I'll take one!
Pros: Read above. I've had it for two weeks and I am still on the original battery using it daily. That battery life is because I am running it it PC--MD mode and USB is powering it.
Cons: Small controls, no back light, no recording.
