There is a fix if you know you will not need 4G.
by TNSearcher on February 10, 2011
Pros: Easy to set up.
Verizon email support tried to help and gave me several things I could try. (not successful)Cons: Set up should offer more options to configure the modem to each user's needs and location.
The modem constantly disconnected and did not reconnect on its own. I had to manually connect every 5-10 minutes.Summary: I live in the country and will never get 4G. My previous UM175 modem did a great job. It did not disconnect when the signal was weak. It just kept ...
Summary: I live in the country and will never get 4G. My previous UM175 modem did a great job. It did not disconnect when the signal was weak. It just kept trying. I also use a router on occasion (Cradlepoint CTR35 now, previously CTR350).
I switched because the 4G plan is less expensive.
After trying the fixes suggested by Verizon email support and before spending more time calling Verizon Support, I spent a few hours searching for an answer myself. I found a fix at the EVDOinfo.com site
http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/3492/64/
Although it is intended for those using the router, the Pantech Modem Utility download will allow the modem to work in 3G whether connected to the computer or the router.
At this time, I have been connected for over 2 hours and have not had a bit of trouble.
I hope this information is helpful to others.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not sufficiently tested and constantly disconnects.
by Bigun89 on August 4, 2011
Pros: In a pure 4G area (no 3G) this product would work fine, it would also work fine if left on "Manual Connect" settings.
Cons: Everything else, leaving it on the default settings it disconnects constantly and doesn't consistently find the 4G network and connects to 3G instead.
Summary: Until they come out with some newer firmware or a newer device.... STAY AWAY! This review is current as of 8/4/2011.

Drops connections every few minutes
by Fast Eddy on April 11, 2011
Pros: Haven't found any yet
Cons: Unreliable. Verizon replaced my first one and the replacement does exactly the same thing. I've tried to convince their customer service folks that there is a generic problem, and told them to just do a google search and they will see hundreds of referenc

Summary: I've tried using this directly connected to a laptop, and also with a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router. Makes no difference; it drops the signal every few minutes and requires being reset. This is a major pain. I've gone back to my good old reliable V740 Expresscard, which works flawlessly in the MBR1000.

Unbelievably horrible - Do not purchase this product!
by jellycarroll on January 31, 2011
Pros: When it works it is very fast, but it only works about 10% of the time. I am in NYC, a "full coverage area".
Cons: The connection is constantly dropped. Also, it's supposed to toggle back and forth between 4G to 3G if needed but this transition is never seamless and 99% of the time the coverage is dropped anyway.
Summary: I am sincerely shocked at the poor quality of this product. I've been using VZ USB modems for approx 5 years and the other 3G products worked far better. ...
Summary: I am sincerely shocked at the poor quality of this product. I've been using VZ USB modems for approx 5 years and the other 3G products worked far better. I was recently forced to replace my UM175 (it was lost) which was a lot slower, but much more reliable. I've had this UML290 for approx 3-4 weeks and the maximum connection time I've experienced is 25 minutes, most sessions are 5-8 minutes, then I'm dropped. There seems to be a software issue as well because once it drops it can no longer detect the device without restarting VZAccess Manager. 50% of the time I have to reboot the entire laptop to fix the problem. It's important to note that I have 3 laptops (2 with Windows XP, and 1 with Windows 7) and this problem happens on all 3 machines. It's clearly a problem with the product. I've spent many hours on the phone with tech support and they can't help me. I will most likely be leaving Verizon after 5 years because of the poor quality of this product.

this product sucks
by sfchef2 on January 11, 2011
Pros: Its fast when it does work but is not reliable
Cons: oftentimes you cannot connect at all and when you do its dropped. I live in SF where there is complete coverage
Summary: do not buy this product. It seems that it was not tested very much before it was sent to market. It might be a software problem.

Disconnects, can be decent when working which is rare
by mrely2 on December 31, 2010
Pros: It is OK when working correctly. I expected faster but what can I say.
Cons: Hard to stay logged in and does not work well with a supported router. So much for a wireless home and office with this product.
Summary: It could be a Verizon problem more than the Pantech 290 but one will never know. I would like to hear input from people that bought the other aircard that ...

In a tribute to Wadsworth, here's an analogy for you
by JJOhio on December 28, 2010
Pros: When the signal is good, it is lightning fast!
I like the texting capability right through the modem!
I like the fact there are antenna ports on it for both 3G and 4G (albeit they are separate)Cons: When the signal is bad, there's nothing! (I live on the outskirts of 4G)
The tether cable could be just a tad bit longer!
It would be nice if they had really bothered to have someone actually make an antenna that works with 4G for it!Summary: So, in my tribute to Henry Wadsworth, here's a little poem (and analogy) for you:
"There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle ...Summary: So, in my tribute to Henry Wadsworth, here's a little poem (and analogy) for you:
"There was a little girl,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid."
By analogy, one might say, that when the signal is good, the modem is very good indeed, but when the signal is bad the modem is horrid!
Once the signal and service for 4G LTE becomes ubiquitous throughout the country, this might deserve a higher rating. Until that happens, it still is a bit lower in my book.
Again, I live on the outskirts of 4G, so if I were more centrally located, the signal might be better, and in that instance I might give it a higher rating also.
As for speed, it really is way faster than 3G, and way faster than Clearwire's older service (although I'm anxious to see what their 4G is like). I've watched YouTube uninterrupted in 4G that has absolutely no breaks or pauses, which is amazing for a wireless signal!
If you live in a 4G area, by all means, go for it! Verizon will love you!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
