Griffin iTrip Auto for iPod price range: $24.95 - $42.99

The bottom line: Griffin's iTrip Auto is well designed and easy on the eyes, but it fails to outperform the DLO TransPod, our current favorite FM transmitter for the Apple iPod.
But we also disliked that the transmitter lacked preset buttons; although the Griffin iTrip Auto remembers the last station it was on before powering off, we'd rather be able to scroll through a series of preset frequencies to find the best sound. The most interesting feature of the iTrip Auto is the integration of two sound-quality settings: DX and LX. Recognizing the issues that arise in real-world application, Griffin gives users the option of switching between LX for stereo transmission and DX mode for a stronger but mono auditory signal. The iTrip is also capable of transmitting in both U.S. and international modes for a wide array of radio stations.
In terms of clarity of transmission, the Griffin iTrip Auto performed better than previous versions but still experienced bouts with static interference and fuzz in certain areas around the city. We weren't able to find a clear radio station that provided a continuous, uninterrupted signal for our music. Switching to DX mode helped with the signal but at the expense of the sound quality. The $70 price tag is worth it for a combination FM transmitter and car charger, but due to the absence of preset stations, the lack of a stationary cradle, and the sketchy audio transmission, the iTrip can't hold a candle to our current king of the ring, the DLO TransPod.

Better but still room to improve.
by lds1313 on February 19, 2006
Pros: Digital display, Built in charging capability, Cord Length, Gets power from car instead of iPod, More powerful signal than the original iTrip.
Cons: Still not as Powerful as it needs to be. Can't use it anywhere that does not have a cigerette lighter power outlet. Only comes in Black.

Summary: I have had the Original iTrip for nearly a year, and have struggled to get a decent signal in my car because of its antenna location. My car has a rear mounted antenna which caused signal problems within the car in addition to station bleed that is a problem with the iTrip. I was convinced that the problem was power. Because the iTrip used power from the iPod it was not strong enough to "reach" my antenna. The new iTrip Auto seems to have made progress in this area, by getting its power from the car. The signal strength is definitely stronger. It even seems to overpower weak stations I have tuned in to while testing it. The original could not overpower even the weakest station.
This Auto version also Charges your iPod instead of draining the battery like the previous model.
As far as programing is concerned it is far superior. No more iTrip stations on your iPod! The stations are easily selected by the in-line module. (A huge improvement!) The volume control is also different. On the Original the volume of the iPod has to be set between 50 and 75% to get optimum sound quality from your receiver. The Auto version does not require and input from the iPod for volume. Your car stereo will make all volume adjustments.
Overall I feel it is a big improvement for those of us restricted to an FM transmitter. If you have the option for a hard wire system you will be much happier. It will cost more but the quality will be worth it.
For style, price and function the iTrip Auto will meet your FM transmitter expectations.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

by serenasloveli on May 7, 2007
Pros: looks nice. easy set up
Cons: the itrip not only transmits music, it transmits a lot of static. so often times I have to hold it to lower the static. way over priced for the quality.

Summary: I've had my iPod and the iTrip for two weeks and I'm here on cNet looking for a better FM transmitter. I find the iTrip's audio to be too low forcing me to crank up the volume on the car radio. The FM transmitter seems to be a little weak which makes it hard to find a spot on the FM dial where I can get clear reception. I'm enjoying my iPod, but not my iTrip.

Great Customer Service -- Low Volume

Summary: I've owned the iTrip for just over a year now and use it virtually everyday. It's never blown me away but has been a convenient way to charge and play my iPod through my car radio. The one thing is I've always wished that it would broadcast a stronger signal so I wouldn't have to crank my stereo's volume up so high.
A few weeks ago I noticed that my left speaker wasn't working while using the iTrip and discovered that there was a short in the cord. Wiggling the cord by the end that connects to the iPod would momentary bring my left speaker back so it was obviously a loose connection. I called up Griffin Support and was very impressed with their Customer Service. It was seriously the best CS experience I've ever had. I didn't have to wait on the phone and the guy I talked to was friendly, knowledgeable and ready to help. Even though I had technically bought it just over a year prior to my talking to him, he didn't hassle me about the one year warranty and basically said send it in and we'll be happy to send you a new one. I received a replacement within a week from when I sent in the defective one which also impressed me.
In summary, you have to like a company that doesn?t make excuses and stands behind its products and customers. The iTrip might not be the best iPod car adapter out there but you won't beat the Customer Service. -
not good for travelling in northeast corridor or NYC area

Summary: High density of radio stations in NE corridor and moving about NYC area means that it is pretty much useless when commuting in NYC metro area, or driving from Boston to NY. Have to keep looking for a new free frequency every few minutes in some places along the way. This is what I bought it for, so I've switched to a cassette adapter that won't work in new cars without cassette players.

Summary: The Griffin Itrip for the Sansa is just crappy. This device will not hold signal to save your life. It fades in and out as you drive and it only hold a constant signal when it is held in the right place. It works ok when you are not driving and you put it in the position that it needs to be in to get its signal out. I wouldn't recommend this item for anything but that that.

Good Performer and Easy to Use

Summary: Set up is simple. The unit operated well right out of the box. This iTrip Auto is installed in a Toyota and is static-free. Volumne is controlled using the car radio volumne control. There is no need to fuss around with the iPod audio level as it is monitored and controlled at the interface by the iTrip Auto system. The iPod Docking connector is smooth and snug fitting and has two small locking clips built-in to prevent any movement of connector. This is much better than the DLO type of unit which allows the iPod to fall out on bumpy roads. Press both sides of the docking connector to release. The LX/DX (stereo/mono) function works by holding down the iTrip Select Switch for 3 seconds. LX gives you stereo and DX gives you mono FM transmission. I use LX for stereo and have no problems with static or cross frequency interference. The unit is small enough so that I toss the whole thing into the center armrest console and drive away. Toyota has a cigarette lighter outlet inside the armrest console which makes this possible. You may prefer the small form factor that this unit offers since you could just lay it out in a coffee cup holder etc. Other types like the highly acclaimed DLO, look more like a construction crane sticking out of your instrument panel. My daughter has a $100 DLO so I do know its ups and downs. In addition, my 8 GB Nano would not mate to the DLO due to the fact that the connector appeared somewhat thicker than it should be. I am able to connect my 8 GB Nano to all other connectors so this may explain why DLO has put out a seond generatio "Silver" model. The Griffen iTrip Auto is certanly worth the money and varies from $39 t0 $69 dollars in the stores as compared to DLO @ $100. Choice is yours though.

Think twice before buying this product!

Summary: The transmitter/antenna is very weak. I have tried in 4 different vehicles and cannot get a clear radio signal on ANY frequency. It is like trying to pull in a very distant radio station. Besides the static, the audio signal is very weak, requiring the radio to be nearly twice as load as normal listening. The signal is so weak that occassionally other vehicles drive on the road with signals that overpower the iTrip. Perhaps there is simply a problem with my unit, but then I wouldn't know since the warranty on this product is at the discretion of the store. I would recommend finding a different product.
