*the* solution for headphones-free iPod listening!
Pros: I have been looking for a way to enjoy my iPod at work and in my car, sans headphones-I'd tried the cassette adapter (only good in the car)- some quality loss, needed to crank up the volume to hear much, long cord to tangle up. I tried an iRock!, but wher
Cons: had to think awhile for this- setting the stations isn't instantly intuitive, but actually reading the instructions took care of that... ; )

Summary: I bought this in Sept. 2006 and used it for the first time on a six hour car trip in Oct. 2006. I could not make it work at all. I didn't bring the instructions because when I tried it out at home, it seemed simple enough and it worked. Once I reached my destination, I found an electronics store and read through the instructions again. It worked sometimes during the six hours back to the airport, but mostly it did not work. I kept thinking it was something I was doing. From that trip through Sept. 2007, I continued to try it when on a car trip. It hardly worked. After calling Griffin, I found out that since I bought it at Target and no longer had the receipt, they couldn't help me. I don't know about most people, but I shop at Target a few times a month, and I don't keep my receipts. I have now purchased an FM transmitter for my Ipod by another manufacturer. I just returned from a 2100 cross country road trip. It worked flawlessly. I had no problems with it at all. I probably should have contacted Griffin earlier, but I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. However, I can't believe they would not help me without the receipt. Maybe my iTrip was defective, however, without help from them, all I know is that it didn't work and I wouldn't recommmend it.

Setting the frequency is a pain.
FM range is pathetic. It's 50% music/ 50% static in my car (an 2004 model GTO). Using it in the house I have to wrap the recievers antenna around the itunes device to get static free reception (for the technically minded it's extremely susceptable to Reileigh fading).
Spend your money on something else, the number o 'hacks' on Google for this device should tell you how bad it is. -

Summary: It's a little complicated to use, but not bad. The real problem is that this transmitter is too weak to produce a good signal. I live in an area with lots of open freq's and it only works well if I hold it 2 inches from my car radio. I guess I could tape my ipod to the front of my radio....or I'll bet I can just find a better product for half the price and call the iTrip the waste of money that it is. Find something with some POWER!

Summary: The interface is excellent, and it looks great. I have a holder that keeps the ipod stable which helps prevent noise. My car is a 94, and there is some problem with crossover noise even when the tuned station is clear and there is nothing on either side. It works very well ar least 90% of the time. This product has no competition in this price range, and gets the job done most of the time.

Very fun, but some limitations

Seems to run about 4-5 hours on a fully
charged iPod at 3/4 volume setting.
Other notes: The more remote you are on the
highway, the less interference from other signals;
the better the sound.
Sometimes the 'fit' of the attachment isn't perfect
and you have to give it a 'love tap' on the
left corner of the iTrip to set it in place.
I'm impressed with the sound quality whether it's
on my car radio or on the reference system
in my home. I use full AIFF files, as opposed, it
MP3. I was astonished at the resolution via
the FM signal when compared to the same
audio file being played, via CD,
through a $ 1,500 CD player. It maintained
at least 80 % of the audio quality. That is amazing
and explains why Stereophile magazine loves
this little gem of a player.
Lastly, I still haven't gotten it to program a
different frequency. I haven't gotten the three
quick flashes yet, it's probably just me.Updated
You MUST have tyhe iPod volume at
atleast 3/4 max or the signal is not
strong enough. Alternatively, at
maximum volume you begn to get
distortion. This is a significant
performance requirement. -

Summary: Well, I read the previous reviews, and was somewhat leary about trying this unit out for my ipod mini, but for $25, and the ability to return, figured I'd give it a go.
I had an iRock! model up until now. Perhaps due to it's limited frequency selection (here in DC, the 88.10 - 88.70 band is actually pretty full) or perhaps due to it's quality overall, I found it all but useless. Had to move it all over the car to get a signal, and then it would fade in and out with a lot of hiss. Plus, the bulky and relatively large design was a pain. Had to carry it around, stuff it someplace when not it use, just bothersome. Plus, it turned on too easily when stored in say, a glove compartment, so batteries were always dead. Based on this unit, don't know why I had the courage to try another.
Well, can tell you, all is peaches and cream now! The default frequency of the iTrip worked wonderfuly right out of the box. I see others had issues with having to change frequencies, but don't really think 87.9 is a commonly used one. And, unless you are driving in a bee line someplace, it should remain open, or at least it does for me.
And true, to change a frequency, you probably should pull over for a minute, about the same concept as using your cell phone. And I see other units have screens to show frequency, but must say, I agree that the iTrip is so aesthetically pleasing that I can put up with this minor issue.
And no, it does not sound as good as hard wiring to a unit. But, if you could do that, I assume you would - meaning one buys this type of unit because they have to to get the tunes over the air. Fade outs are all but absent and always brief.
Be warned though, reviewers seem to say that this boy doesn't seem to effect the ipod battery much, but I found it's use drains the battery down pretty quickly, perhaps due to having to have the ipod set at about 80% of max volume.
At $25, and because it works very well, this bad boy is a no brainer!

- Description: You are looking at the coolest iPod accessory in the world. The iTrip FM transmitter for the iPod can play your music through any FM radio in your car, at a party, wherever the mood strikes you - and you have a radio. It's clear that the iTrip is made specifically for the iPod. This gives iTrip advantages over similar devices. For example, with the iTrip, you can have the cleanest possible signal - because you can choose any radio station on the dial to tune for the best performance possible. You do this by 'playing' special station codes directly from the iPod itself. Simple. Another advantage of the iTrip is that it needs no batteries - it receives its tiny amount of power from the iPod. The Original iTrip can even rotate out of the way to charge the iPod while still in use. No more batteries ever again. There's not even a power switch - just plug it in and go. It shuts off automatically after 60 seconds of silence - just like the iPod. The iTrip is the ultimate accessory for the iPod because it allows you to share the music and share the fun beyond your headphones. Don't leave home without it.
