Apple iPod Touch 2011 (64GB, black) price range: $329.00 - $534.19

The good: Apple's iPod Touch comes with a new color, a new price, and feature-packed OS. It records HD video, chats over video or iMessages, checks your e-mail, keeps your appointments, connects to the cloud, rents movies, plays music, takes pictures, and plays more games than any of its competitors.
The bad: Photo quality doesn't hold up to the iPhone 4's; there's no GPS, and no option for 3G data service.
The bottom line: The iPod Touch is the best iPod yet, offering all the fun of the iPhone experience without a carrier contract or monthly bill.

CNET review mistaken about ipod touch 4 not having GPS.
by lornapat on March 19, 2012
Pros: CNET says the ipod touch 4 has no GPS. Not true. Search for ipod and GPS- you'll find Apple's explanation of how the GPS works. Locate your ipod if it's lost or remotely put a message on the front page- or even remotely wipe your contents if needed.
Cons: I love it... no disappointment here.

Jack of all trades...
by Applerod on October 24, 2011
Pros: Seamless, intuitive touchscreen interface (and OS); wonderful display; thin and portable; crazy amount of features; app access
Cons: No GPS (or 3G option); OS lacks some depth; no custom graphic equalizer or audio enhancements; portability means relatively small screen; battery drains rapidly with gaming and Wi-Fi use; camera is poor; includes crappy headphones but no wall charger
Summary: The iPod Touch is my first Apple device. It's also my first touchscreen or true multifunction gadget, so the thing is a little hard to evaluate.
The phrase "Jack ...Summary: The iPod Touch is my first Apple device. It's also my first touchscreen or true multifunction gadget, so the thing is a little hard to evaluate.
The phrase "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind though in this case the first half of that expression is the truest and most important. Is this "the best" pure portable music player? Not necessarily, because the iPod is no longer centered around just playing music. Sure, the interface is stellar when scrolling through a collection but the device is missing some basic features like a custom equalizer or external buttons to skip songs. That alone combined with the price would be a deal-breaker if it wasn't also a: video player, web browser, camera/camcorder, gaming device, communicator, clock/calendar/calculator/voice recorder/note-taker and several other things. That's just out of the box of course. The expandable functionality of the iPod Touch via apps is the other half of the equation.
In trying to balance so many functions, features, and characteristics, the device is really one giant compromise. The iPod Touch is sleek but you have to fish it out of your pocket just to skip songs. The device is small but so is the screen -- not the best platform for web browsing or watching Lord of the Rings. It's thin but I wouldn't mind it a little thicker if that meant better battery life (or a better camera.) The operating system is simple and accessible, but also pretty shallow.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the newest iPod Touch. I could nitpick its deficiencies forever, or focus on how smartphones are rendering this device obsolete, but that would take away from the fact that for me the iPod Touch is very handy and flat-out cool. (Sidenote: The 64GB model IS expensive, so for many people a better value might be had in the 32GB model.) -
Was great in 2010, merely good in 2011
by PF_ on October 22, 2011
Pros: Easy to carry, easy to use, plenty of apps to make it useful.
Cons: Expensive, fragile, older technology.

Summary: The article's title is deceptive. It sounds like there was a new ipod for 2011, but it's the same old ipod from 2010. The IOS 5 upgrade was ok, but mostly invisible (like any good operating system). The real sizzle for most users is at the Hardware or Application level, so a +1year old ipod touch fails to excite...
This ipod touch is still in dire need of a better camera. Adding the improved processor from the iphone 4s would be nice (to run Siri). -

Summary: Am I the only one horrified at the absurd price of this toy? Yes it is a top-notch player, but $400, REALLY???????? In an age where so many people can't afford to the most basic necessities, where does Apple come off charging this exorbitant price for a toy THAT WILL BE OBSOLETE within a couple years? You know, the Sony Walkman tape player enabled the masses to enjoy their music wherever they went -- it was a real gift to those of us who craved the ability to listen to our own music, follow our own drummers. Apple has not only monopolized the portable music player industry and driven out the competition, it has created a device that only the rich and frivolous can afford. Where's the gift in that? Maybe the OCCUPY WALL STREET rallies should set up camp outside a certain Apple headquarters.

Overpriced and outdated
by primetechv2 on October 19, 2011
Pros: For people who don't know what Android is, what MP3 players are, and how to save money, this device is "the bomb."
Cons: For people who are even somewhat tech-savvy, or already have a smartphone, this oversized device is too much.

Summary: The iPod is an overhyped excuse for an MP3 player, which can only be explained by Apple's cult-like following. And really, sheep, that's all it is: an MP3 player with the letter "i" at the front of it.
The interface is not customizable, although every little detail has been blown out of proportion by Apple as being brand-new. They've finally stolen the Android notification bar, which they have labeled as all their own.
And to top it off, they've added the name of this year (umm, 2011?) and demanded another $399 from their consumers. Lame.
What can this iPod do? Not much. It can't surf the web without being tethered to a wifi connection. It cannot tell you where you're going when it's offline, something a $99 Android device can do (like the prepaid Optimus V off a contract.)
There is no expandable memory. There is no replaceable battery. There's no option for a slide-out keyboard. 3G service is not opt-in at your discretion. There's no choice (unless seeing your phone in white gives you the shivers). There are no third-party apps to be installed, no homescreen widgets, but oh look! I can Twitter without installing something!
Long story short, if you're too dumb to actually bargain shop and customize things, this is a great way to look "different" by being just like everybody else. Flash this around, let people know you can waste money.2 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.
Specifications
- Manufacturer: Apple
- Part number: MC547LL/A
- Description: iPod touch has an all-new design that makes it the thinnest, lightest, most amazing iPod touch ever. Holding one is all the proof you need. With its curved design, iPod touch is now a mere 7.2 millimeters thin. Its engineered glass front and stainless steel back feel sleek and smooth in your hand. Turn it on, and you're instantly blown away by the brilliant Retina display. iPod touch is the perfect combination of stunning design and revolutionary technology - brilliant from the outside in. There are lots of reasons you won't want to take your eyes off the iPod touch. The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display, for one. It packs 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution iPod screen ever. To achieve this, Apple engineers developed pixels so small - a mere 78 micrometers across - that the human eye can't distinguish individual pixels. Even though you can't see them, you'll definitely notice the difference. Text is remarkably sharp and graphics are incredibly vivid. The Apple A4 chip is behind, or rather underneath, all the fun you can have on iPod touch. Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor. With it, iPod touch can easily perform complex jobs such as multitasking, editing video, and placing FaceTime calls. All while maximizing battery life. And fun. iPod touch just learned some new moves. It includes a built-in three-axis gyroscope. When paired with the accelerometer, the gyro makes iPod touch capable of advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience. iPod touch captures video with two built-in cameras. It shoots amazing HD 720p video from the back camera. And with its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful footage even in low-light settings. All while the built-in microphone records conversations, music, or any audio at the same time. And on the front of iPod touch, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits. It's surprising how much fun can fit into something so small. When you put your finger on iPod touch, how does it just start doing what you want it to do? It's a chain reaction, really. The Multi-Touch display layers a protective shield over a capacitive panel that senses your touch using electrical fields. It then transmits that information to the Retina display below it. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, zoom in and out on a section of a web page, and control game elements precisely. FaceTime on iPod touch lets you hang out, catch up, and goof off with friends in an entirely new way. With just a tap, you can see what your friends are up to - literally. Witness a prank in action. Or watch your friend on the other side of the country crack up at your stories from last night - iPod touch to iPod touch or iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. And all you need to get started is an Apple ID and an email account. You can choose an email account you already have or, if you prefer, set up a new one. You'll never see fun the same way again.
