Finally: An Excellent Alternative to the iPod
by cweider on May 20, 2006
Pros: Small size, gorgeous screen, more features, easy to navigate, Battery life, FM

Summary: Wow, I'm an iPod owner, and this little device blew me away! It came in yesterday and the coworker (also an iPod owner) who watched me unbox it immediately said "I'm getting one." upon seeing it.
The screen is MUCH more vivid and detailed than my iPod. Add in FM with auto-tune, line/mic recording, downloadable flash games, 5-band custom EQ in addition to the SRS & WOW, and daily wallpaper & themes that automatically change and it makes the iPod look very "legacy". It sounds great and syncs identically ala iPod/iTunes.
The cradle is a "must have", it looks adorable; just like a miniature TV set w/ stereo speakers and it also includes an IR remote.
Everyone that I've shown it to wants one. You need to see it in person as it's much, much smaller than it appears in pictures without any size references.
I've never bothered looking much past the iTunes/iPod combo until the launch of Urge/WMP11. The Clix coupled with the former software & service make an unbeatable combination for those looking for unrestricted access to a HUGE library of music.
Oh, by the way, order the Clix from iriveramerica.com and look for the coupon code (1PX100) to get free Sennheiser PX100 headphones along with the Clix.
Overall, the Clix is HIGHLY recommended!!54 out of 60 users found this user opinion helpful.

Extremely nice - small - sexy (and useful!) multimedia player

Pros: Breathtaking and original design, bright and colorful screen, easy to control, a lot of features

Don't get ...Summary: The first thing you'll notice when you open the nice box is the Clix design: Oh my God it's so small!! So cool, so beautiful!
Don't get me wrong, the iPods are really nice players, but to be honest, this Clix beats them in sexiness and cool appereance.
You really have to take a look at one Clix to see how cool this little player is. Pictures don't make justice to it. The design is really nice, it's small, it's light and its screen is clean, bright and colorful. And beside the design, the features of this player are also great.
The Clix has a different approach than the rest of mp3 players with its original design. The controls are quite different, but work flawlessly with the player. The synchronization with the computer is easy and fast using WMP11. The video playback is really nice (even if it's 15 fps, it's enough for musical videos, tv series, cartoons, etc.). The video conversion, although not automatic, it's easy enough using the Iriverter software (available on iRiver homepage). The ability to read Text documents is a handy addition. Pictures slideshows work fine, with the ability to play music while watching the pics. FM radio may be helpful (not for me really), as well as the voice recording. And the games are cool enough to expend some time (Sudoku is great!).
The sound quality is really good (I must admit that I'm not an expert on audio anyway).
One cool feature is the ability to create quick playlist on the go; it's really easy (click and hold on a song and then an option menu appear, where you can add it to the playlist).
I have to test yet battery time, to see how's the player's performance in this area.
Another thing: because this player is so nice, you will be always cleaning the screen from fingerprints. It's a good idea to get a screen protector (like the one available in the accesories set, or like those from Clarivue).
Anyway, in my opinion this Clix is one of the better players I've seen. The features are great, but the design is truly breathtaking. It's good to see different and original designs on mp3 players that show that there's life beyond the iPod.19 out of 19 users found this user opinion helpful.

It gets a 9.9999999!
by cubed201 on June 25, 2006
Pros: FABULOUS screen and easy navigation, small, superb battery life, support for pretty much all formats, packed to the gills with features
Cons: Only 2 gigs but this is really only a con if you want to have your entire collection of music with you at all times. This is almost overcome by the fact that you can tune to local radio stations.

Summary: I have had them all, iPods, Archos, Rio Carbon, creative muvo and zen, but i must say that this tops them all. Its ultra portable but the screen still somehow seems big, bright, and detailed. there are all of the features you would want -- support for numerous music formats, FM Tuner, video, photos, and even flash games (blew me away when it came preloaded with SUDOKU!!!!). it even has cool little features like changing the background depending on what day of the week it is.. and oh you can record from the radio on the fly so if you hear a new song on the radio you can record it then and there! i really cant say enough about the screen and the wonderful resolution it has and the text looks crisp and clear. i really want to give this a ten but i have SOOOO much music. However, 2 gigs gives me just enough so that i can have all my favorite cds along with me. i can go on a road trip or business trip, put the clix on shuffle and never hear the same song twice for the entire trip which is great.

1. Janus capable. I have Yahoo music ($60 for 12 months when I got it) and I get whatever I want - even if I am not sure if I will like the tunes. Untill IPod gets subscription based - this is a better MP3 Player. Period.
2. Its tiny - not a thin as a Nano but so much smaller. Better battery life too.
3. Your mother doesn't have one. If you're like me and don't want the same thing everyone else has, but want something awsome... this is it.9 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Read this before you buy- Cute but useless for Musicnow srvc

Pros: small, bright screen, fm radio, great sound

Summary: I agree with everyone that says that this player is cute with a bright screen but you want to buy a player for more than its looks, right? I bought if for the same reason all the high raters below did. When I first showed it to my friends they immediately wanted to get one because it looked so unique. Oh and I agree with the reviewer who said that the pictures do not do it justice, you definitely have to see the actual player itself. The features are great too, it has an FM radio which works perfectly, alarm clock and you know the rest from the cnet review.
I bought this player to use with my AOL musicnow subscription service. I know, why am I using that service to begin with?, it is very basic and not very user friendly. But before I signed up I did some research and that is the only service that I found that will allow me to actually stream music from any computer. All of the other services required you to download some type of program onto the computer. However, I listen to music mainly at work and since I work as a temp I am constantly moving from one company to the next and so I can't be stuck to any one computer. This would be a nice segueway into why I no longer use my ipod but I think I have digressed enough.
Anyway, so when I synched the player with the music from my musicnow portability plan everything seemed fine until I tried to play the music on the player. I got an error message and then the player cycled through each song and gave the same message. This happens automatically, I cannot stop the cycling or return to the homescreen. Eventually the player froze up and I couldn't even shut it off. So I put it back into the box still powered on and by the next morning the battery was dead. I took it back to the store and exchanged it for a new one because I liked the player so much that I really wanted to give it a chance.
The second player had the same problem except that it did not freeze up like the first one. I realized or rather decided that it was not going to work with the Aol Musicnow service. So instead of experimenting with other services I just went ahead and downloaded Urge. It synched fine with Urge but not without a few glitches. When I tried to synch certain albums (Busta Rhymes' Big Bang for eg) some songs synched but a few wouldn't. I guess that is some kind of deal with the record company. Another minor annoyance was that the album art for some albums would not show up on the player even though they showed up on WMP 11. Now this is a comment about Urge: there is no way to keep track of the songs that you have picked out online. It only works through Windows Media Player. So let's say you are at work and you feel the 'urge' to add a certain album to your download list or playlist there is no way for you to do that online with your computer at work. Unless of course you have downloaded WMP11 as well as Urge on your computer at work. Of course if you are a temp you are constantly moving from one computer (loaner) to the next so you don't have that option. Also if I happen to forget my player at home one day I have no access to my music. Another problem which I guess is true for most subscription services is that the Urge music library is expansive but still doesn't have some albums.
Other faults with the player: No wall charger!!! You have to plug it into a computer to charge it and it has to be a PC. Fingerprints like crazy all over the thing, and this is crazy because you have to touch the screen to operate the darn thing. Also, whose stupid idea was it to create a video player that only has 2 gigs of memory and no room for expansion??? Add to that the fact that the battery is nonreplaceable, kinda reminds me of the ipod (in that feature only, ipod lovers calm down). Also no carrying/ clip on case, I was constantly dropping this thing cause I had nothing to put it in when I was walking around without my pocketbook. I don't see a case online either except for that arm thing which I agree (with another reviewer) is useless. Besides I shouldn't have to buy a separate clip on case for it, the manufacturers should have anticipated that we would be carrying the player around and would need to fast forward, pause...music on the go. The pouch that comes in the box is not conducive to that.
Despite all that I gave this player a 6 because if you are perfectly happy with the Urge service and that is all you want the clix for, then go ahead, its a great little player. It just happens to be useless for my purposes. I am unfortunately returning my second one tomorrow. Hate to see it go.12 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have windows xp and have tried both WMP 10 and 11, neither work. They crash anytime I have this MP3 player hooked up. I try getting the latest firmware and it won't even install on the unit. While I love the unit, I've hit a major showstopper in the fact that it causes WMP to crash. The other thing I find very annoying is the fact that I can't use it while it's charging. I thought this unit could really use a review other than perfect, I suppose if it worked with my PC I would probably give it a 9. My fiance's ipod nano works perfectly on my pc. Apple knows how to make a bug free unit which is important to the masses.

Awesome MP3 Player with minimum flaws.
by Bigshowfor69 on August 5, 2006
Pros: Nice Screen, great colors, and easy to use
Cons: unable to support foreign language music files, the accessories really stink, ARMBAND kills all access to your player, and IRIVER support is terrible

Summary: Overall, this is probably the best MP3 player in the market right now. Its really small, but the screen is amazingly big. I like the quality of the pictures and videos I store on it. The screen quality is amazing. Music quality is awesome too and its really loud and clear. The accessories it comes with is nice with a really long and nice ear phone plus a carrying case. Amazing battery life is what totally makes this player worthwhile because its up to 25 hours and I didnt have to charge it for 5-6 days of continuous use. The file organizing ability of the player is awesome. It sorts out your music files based on album, artists, category and etc. Not to mention, the awesome packaging the player comes with and how neat the player looks when you carry it around. Its definitely worth the buy and my co-workers raves about it at work.
However, there are a few flaws. Because IRIVER is pulling out of the MP3 market, I have not been able to get much technical support. The support I wanted to know was whether there is a firmware I can download for viewing Chinese characters on my Mp3 player. I have many chinese songs and some of them shows up and some of them comes up as gibberish. Second, because the controls is touching the screen, your screen can have alot of finger prints and you have to constantly press the lock on the screen so you dont accidentally touch a key. This makes the armband totally useless because once you buy it and you slip your I River Clix in it, it totally locks it. You can not press the screen at all. Third, I am noticing my music skips just a little when i work out, I think it might be bad music download or my player. Im not sure.
But, this is definitely the best player in the market. I hope my Cons dont discourage anyone from purchasing it.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: As soon as I saw this thing reviewed by cNet I had to get one. I had been hesitant about buying the expensive U10 because of it's storage capacity, but 2GB is just enough for me.
Overall, this thing is easy to use, small, and looks awesome. The screen resolution is top-notch, the battery life is great (so far), it charges quickly via the USB cable, the volume levels go extremely high for a player this size, and the features cannot be beat.
Some people complain that its thicker than the iPod Nano, which is true, but I found the Nano to be too thin, like it would easily break in my pocket. I like this because it has some thickness to it.
The FM radio's reception is excellent, I had no problem picking up ANY of my favorite local radio stations, and it's very easy to add them to the presets.
MP3 uploading into the player is lightning fast (if you're using USB 2.0). Each song took about 2 seconds (if that). The songs sound great and the manual EQ settings are hard to find on an MP3 player.
Video playback is okay for a player of this size, a nice capability, but I can't really see myself using this for it's video playback, I already own an Archos AV500 for that (which is awesome).
The Flash games are absolutely an amazing bonus. I'm already addicted to the Soduku in the daily newspaper, and it includes a free version of that among many others. You can even download more on iriver.com (where I bought my Clix) including Blackjack.
I only have two complaints right now. The Hold Button doesn't deactivate the volume and power buttons (those can still be pushed accidentally); and the overall feel of the device is kinda light and cheap. Unlike the regular iPods (excluding the nano and shuffle) which have some substance to them (mass and density). I must note, however, that these drawbacks are MINOR at best.
I've only had it for a couple of days, but so far, I'm glad I bought it. If you're looking for an Digital Media Player w/ FM capabilities, without having to purchase expensive add-ons, and that works FLAWLESSLY with WMP11 and Urge, this is the one to get!
If anything changes, I'll be back to add to my review.Updated
It DOES work for the power button, the only thing that still operates when the unit is set to hold is the volume...which is okay by me.Updated
Good luck getting replies that work from iRiver, I think they have 1st graders answering their tech support inquiries.
I couldn't get the firmware updater to recognize my click and still haven't gotten a solid answer from iRiver (asked on 6/5/06).
My Clix just failed (won't power on or anything) and they haven't responded to my inquiry in well over 72 hours...

Best bang for the buck...
by Patrick Bateman on May 25, 2006
Pros: 2.2 in. screen, unique intuitive navigation, Ogg Vorbis support, loud and good SQ, a bright future with Flash Lite games and applications, small but not too small, screen rotation, long battery life
Cons: Currently the Clix is only MTP capable future implementation of UMS is probable, 15 fps is noticable for fast action/moving sequences in videos (great for cartoons/anime though)
Summary: At $200 USD for a 2gb flash player you cannot get more features along with a great UI like the Clix.
Accessories such as the cradle with remote and armstrap ...Summary: At $200 USD for a 2gb flash player you cannot get more features along with a great UI like the Clix.
Accessories such as the cradle with remote and armstrap and case w/screen protector are a great compliment for this player.
The U10 was a great player but its price was not too great, with the price adjustment of the Clix it cures almost all negatives of its predecessor.
This is an awesome player and probably the best feature-packed flash player for the $200 and under range. It is priced to compete with the ipod nano, and comparing both I believe the wisest choice is evident.8 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.
