The good: The 80GB Microsoft Zune MP3 player features a 3.2-inch glass LCD; a user-friendly interface; exceptional navigation control; audio and video podcast support; a superlative FM radio with RBDS information; wireless syncing and sharing; high-quality earphones; revamped Zune Marketplace PC software; Zune Pass subscription music support; good audio quality; and a built-in composite-video output.
The bad: The Zune is a PC-only device that requires its own software and still does not support older WMA-DRM9 music files; Zune Marketplace does not offer TV or movie downloads; the USB connection is proprietary; no Wi-Fi music streaming; and the EQ feature has been removed.
The bottom line: The Zune has blossomed from an ugly duckling into a worthy iPod alternative.

A rare high score from me
by Milez5858 on July 29, 2008
Pros: Looks, Battery Life, Screen size, XNA open develper game support
Cons: Needs more companies making accessories, more video formats should be supported

Summary: Since getting a Zune, my other popular player collects dust. I simply find the Zune to look and work better. I love the enertia scrolling off the pad. It gives scrolling a smooth feel. The wireless is nice to have, and will be really cool as games are developed for group play. I've alread seen a beta of an FPS. I don't know how the controls will feel, but what a great way to have an instant LAN party. This option simply isn't available anywhere else, and although it's not fully developed yet, you can see the potential here. I find the sync software easier to use than that other player and it does not have to convert all my music, although I prefer a simple hard drive icon in My Computer to simply copy songs. This can be done through some "hacks". Oh.. that's the other thing. Like most microsoft product, third party programmers create ways of doing things that Microsoft forgets. Those other players cannot do this. Music is DRM Free on ZuneMarketplace. You can use it on other players without using soon to be illegal DRM removal software. I've given a 10/10, but that's only because 9.5 isn't available, and 9 isn't high enough. If it supported more movie formats, it would get a 10. Having to convert AVI or MPG seems silly considering they are the most popular. However, at least Windows Movie Maker does this conversion without having to purchase 3rd party software.

Easy navigation, nice appearance, and lots of features.
by mccirclesforever on February 14, 2009
Pros: The touch pad makes this model, much easier to navigate than the previous generation, the large screen makes video watching a pleasure, and the wireless zune marketplace makes remembering which songs you want simple. Stores more video than 80gb ipod.
Cons: Still a little large in size and it would be nice if the zunes with more memory had more of a color selection. It has enough battery life to watch two 1.5 hour movies and listen to music for awhile, but a longer battery life would be awesome.

Summary: If you're in the market for a product with ever improving software, great video capabilities, nice screen size, decent resolution, and want all the other givens (music, games, pictures) along with that, the zune is for you. Plus the new wireless zune marketplace allows you to browse music wirelessly (within wifi range) and mark songs you like so that you can purchase them when you sync to your computer. Speaking of syncing, you can do so wirelessly, you can send pictures and songs to your friends with zunes wirelessly and recieve them as well. It is a social experience as opposed a personal ("i") one. With more and more improvements with time, games are now available, and are exquisite on a device with the screen size of zune. My favorites though, are choosing your own pictures as a background, the quality of the zune premium headphones, and the ease of use. This a product that is definitely hassle-free, innovative, and enjoyable, so join the social!!!

Pros: Headphones!, Interface, Touch Pad Navigation, No iTunes (yay!), Customizable Backgrounds, Large Screen, Scratch Resistant
Cons: No Games (at first), No web browsing with wifi (come on, MS, at least slap IE on it! :D), No Equalizer, Sometimes buggy Software
Summary: I have had my Zune for about 2 months now. I love it and use it almost everyday. The large screen is great, but the picture quality could be improved (...
Summary: I have had my Zune for about 2 months now. I love it and use it almost everyday. The large screen is great, but the picture quality could be improved (especially when you're watching videos, you can kind of see the pixels. The navigation with the touch pad is great, making it able to scroll through lists of music fast. The red color is AMAZING! Overall, I think the Zune is a great competitor to the iPod. It looks better, has a bigger screen, and the Zune software is cooler than iTunes. GO ZUNE!!

Versital, Sturdy device for everyday use.

Summary: Having both an iPod 30gb and and older version ZUNE 30GB, I could not pass up the opportunity to jump on the larger hard drive 80GB device when it went on sale at woot.com one evening. I have maxed out both my previous units, I was searching for something with a larger hard drive. The case design has changed to a nicer metal backed, thinner design which I like much more than the previous one. The shuffle pad has the ability to turn it off and on for those who choose to do it the old way, so that is a nice perk. But the thing that really got me on this unit was the ability to store multiple formats of music. Mostly, constant bit, variable bit and more importantly, LOSSLESS audio. Having that option is very handy. The video playback is second to none.
My only drawback on these newer units, is that they are not able to use in the ZUNE HOME A/V packs, or the Altec Lansing M604 Portable Speaker System for Zune. They moved the bottom charge port so that they no longer fit in either unit. Other than that, this device is VERY handy. I can even store multiple movies on the device for travel, etc. as well as my 6000+ song music collection.
