Philips GoGear SA6045 (4GB) price range: $75.26

The good: The Philips GoGear SA6000 offers a user-friendly design, an ample screen, and dedicated volume controls. It includes desirable features such as an FM tuner and photo and video support. The player is compatible with subscription services, and it has a lot of bass.
The bad: The control pad on the GoGear SA6000 feels cheaply built, and there's no album-art support. The unit is large for a flash player, and some music comes across flat while some bass-heavy tracks are slightly distorted.
The bottom line: The Philips GoGear SA6545 is a feature-filled MP3 player that will suit those looking for good video playback over a compact form factor.
As MP3 players go, the GoGear 6045 is neither cheap nor terribly compact, but it's not expensive and huge, either. The 4GB player goes for about $140 (by contrast, the 4GB Creative Zen V Plus is $110) and measures 3.6x2.1x0.5 inches. The relatively large size has at least one benefit: it allows for an ample 2.2-inch screen. To the right of the screen, you get a five-way control pad, which consists of four directional buttons surrounding a central play/pause/power key. The buttons have a bit of a cheap feel to them in that they wiggle around in the base, but overall, the player has a nice, weighty feel. Above the control pad, you'll find a menu button, and on the top edge, there's a dedicated volume rocker--we always like that.
There are a few more physical characteristics of note. The bottom side of the GoGear 6045 houses a 3.5mm headphone jack, a standard mini USB port, a reset hole, and a hold switch. The right spine features a built-in mic for voice recordings and a rather useful playlist button, which adds the currently playing track to an on-the-go playlist. The player also supports playlists transferred from WMA jukeboxes such as Rhapsody and Windows Media Player (WMP). You can play back MP3 and WMA files (including subscription tracks), and these are handily arranged in the Creative interface structure for easy navigation.
In addition to digital music playback, the GoGear SA6045 offers an FM radio with an autoscan function and 10 preset slots. The player also supports JPEG photos and slide shows, which you can view while listening to music. Sadly, though, there is no album art display on the device, which we think is a waste of the lovely screen. You do get support for WMV videos, which can be automatically converted through Windows Media Player. Despite some noticeable pixilation, photos and videos look quite good when played back on the device. Unfortunately, the placement of the headphone jack makes it pretty much impossible to prop the player up for viewing, but for short clips (when you don't mind holding it up), it works out nicely.
Taking everything into account, the GoGear SA6045 is a decent performer overall, though we wouldn't call the sound quality excellent. Most songs--especially selections from Duran Duran and Kanye West--sounded very good in testing, with a nice, tight bass kick and rich, warm mids. The high end came across clearly as well. However, some Tears for Fears tracks sounded a bit flat while a few bass-heavy Ludacris songs suffered from low-end distortion. Considering both good and bad experiences came from the same two genres--new wave and dance rap--it's impossible to narrow down the best genres. Suffice it to say, it was more good than bad. The rated battery life of 16 hours for audio and 4 hours for video is also passable.

Great product, but terrible time syncing with WMP.

Summary: The user manual says to use WMP to sync music and pictures. WMP 11 doesn't work well at all! It will load around 400 songs or so before it stops completely without giving you any warning and/or reason. The user manual tells you to rollback to WMP 10 in case you have problems with WMP 11. I tried WMP 10 and have the exact same problem.
I ended up using RealPlayer to sync music to my player. It works perfectly. (Though I would have rather used WMP [my personal favorite] who cares what player you use as long as it gets the job done, right?) I use WMP to sync pictures to my player.
The media converter (used to convert and transfer videos to the player) is terribly slow to convert (took 12 hours and 31 seconds to convert 19 half hour episodes, roughly 1.32GB). It transfers quickly, though.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Doesn't work properly, battery failed. Rubbish
by robgee1964 on September 8, 2009
Pros: The styling is quite good, and the build feels a reasonable quality.
Sound quality seems quite adequate, although volume output is a little low, when using with front panel input on a car head unit.Cons: Buggy firmware, sometimes it locks up.
Bundled in media converter is slow to the point of being unusable
On screen text is a bit too small.
After 4 months use, the battery collapsed, now only gives about 4 hours use.Summary: Basically, I would urge people to avoid buying this product. The firmware seems buggy, as it crashes now and then, the only recourse being to press the reset button. Worse ...
Summary: Basically, I would urge people to avoid buying this product. The firmware seems buggy, as it crashes now and then, the only recourse being to press the reset button. Worse still, after only a few months use, the battery collapsed, and now only gives about 3 hours running time. Complete waste of money.

Awesome sound and clear video, screen smallish,
by sammybanana on February 8, 2009
Pros: Had it for 2 years now, use it mainly for gym and travel. The screen could be bigger but than whats the limit, 50 inch hd. Great for general use. I had mine freeze up and do all sorts of rubbish and i formatted it and it only formatted to 800mb. ..
Cons: if pluugen into a car audio system. sound is not loud at all, in fact very low but with headphones, its great. ...Then i rset it a few times and tried different media players and rest and formatted a few more times ...
Summary: at this price point, you cant get any better ...and now its been working like a champ for almost 2 years now.

A very nice player... if only it worked.
by David_Bowman on October 27, 2008
Pros: Good-looking, robust, and easy to use.
Cons: Heavily bugged, the risk of ending up with a non-working device are too high.

Summary: After a while it started malfunctioning: several of my albums were split in two albums having the same name, there were file name changes, the file system got completely garbled, and it was impossible to repair the device using the software on the CD. Then, just 1 month after the end of the guarantee (!), it stopped working completely. Now I'll have to dispose of it as probably it's not worthing repairing.
UPDATE: Philips Consumer Service is terrible, slow, very un-organized and providing non-correct information.
Look on Amazon.com and you'll see loads of users whose player froze and is now unusable.
I believe there's something really wrong with the firmware of this device. That's really too bad because Philips MP3 players look like very nice products, but I'll steer clear from them from now on.

not what I expected from a Philips
by bearwalker on July 28, 2008
Pros: looks & feels like quality
Cons: 5-minute boot/update every on/off cycle. Low volume output - playing in the aux jack of my truck required nearly max volume to listen at a normal volume.
Summary: I sent mine back. The $85 price at Staples was what sold me, but not a good value compared to the ease & volume of my daughter's $19 disney ...

Summary: I got this player recently through my Phillips rewards, so the price was right. This is my first mp3 player to speak of and overall I'm pretty pleased. It is easy to use and load music. So far I have only been ripping CDs to play on it. I also like the radio tuner feature.
However, the volume level does not get very loud. I understand that you do not want to blow out your ears, but I should not have to set the volume to max in order to get something approximating a good listening level.
At the same time I purchased a Logitech Pure-fi Elite speaker/dock. I need to set both the mp3 player and the Elite to max volume to get a decent listening level. Not a party level, a decent, by myself, comfortable volume. Perhaps it is a by-product of ripped files vs. downloaded files; I really don't know (I'm new to all this). But it is really a shortcoming in my view.
In contrast, playing the radio on the Elite (Elite has a tuner), I can get it quite loud.
