Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 price range: $193.00
- Reviewed by: Donald Bell
- Reviewed on: 12/01/2011
- Released on: 11/01/2011
The good: The Galaxy Player 5 offers most of the capabilities of Samsung's popular Android smartphones on a large, 5-inch screen.
The bad: Either a 7-inch tablet or an on-contract Android smartphone would be more useful and potentially less expensive. Parents should know there are no safeguards included to restrict access to age-inappropriate content.
The bottom line: Samsung delivers Android's answer to the iPod Touch at a time when you can spend less for Android's answer to the iPad.

Summary: Very disappointing, just like the ipod to the iphone the galaxy player is basically the phone without the service, this is a good thing. I want the device however; I don't want to pay monthly services especially when I don't use them. So Galaxy player would be a great alternative for the Ipod touch..nuff said

I have no problem with someone who has a preference for apple products.

But Donald Bell should be ashamed of himself for making such a horrid review. Every single pointer about the Samsung Galaxy Player he brings up, he sys along the lines that " Apple does it better."...1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Much better value than I was initially anticipated
by Skyhawk007 on August 16, 2012
Pros: Loaded with built-in features, along with great Android apps which enhance it's abilities. 3.2 mp Camera with Flash, FM Radio (with RDS ability from Android app), Nice screen, ability to play all music files, watching movies, GPS, WiFi.
Cons: Battery life is not as good as I was hoping for. I am only getting about 4 hours of battery life in all.
With a Li-Ion battery like this, I should be getting no less than 10+ hours or so of battery life. Samsung should look into and get it fixed.Summary: As I said in a previous post, I originally was greatly disappointed with this device initially after owning it for a couple of days, but now I see that this ...
Summary: As I said in a previous post, I originally was greatly disappointed with this device initially after owning it for a couple of days, but now I see that this Galaxy Player device has really wowed me with what it can do, despite the bad and WORST advice from BEST BUY and Samsung's HORRIBLE and completely inept/incompetent Customer Service people.
Despite both their bad advice and info, I was able to get great apps from the Android marketplace that enabled my Galaxy Player device to be far better than I ever would have hoped that it would be- especially the FM radio that now has app-enabled RDS functions to make the FM radio even better!
I would HIGHLY recommend people installing the FM RDS app if they are wanting that feature to go along with their FM radio. It's a great app. Also, I recommend installing the JetAudio music player app, because it will enhance the audio quality of their MP3's and MP4's, along with enabling other features for those of us with bad hearing in one of their ears, like me. It's one of the best apps in the Android marketplace, and the best for music lovers.
With all the Android apps that help make the built-in features that much better, this is a great device to own, and is a far better device than the terribly mediocre ratings that CNET gives it. It is far better than the over-rated Apple Ipod, and for it's size, abilities and features, it's the best non-tablet media device on the market today.
As good as this Galaxy Player 5 device is, it can be better with a better battery, a much better and higher resolution camera (the pictures it takes are mediocre at best), enhancing this device with at least a dual-core CPU, and ICS, if possible.
I really hope that Samsung comes out with these enhancements in the new Galaxy Player 6 device by Christmas, if this is their plan to do so.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I was looking around the net before Christmas trying to figure out whether to buy my daughter a Kindle Fire or an ipod touch. After some debating we got her the Samsung 4" player. After a few months I got the 5" version. I think it's great, but I admit this review has kind of gnawed at me for a while, because it is patently unfair. Bell has decided what users want; though he says "I get it" he goes on two paragraphs later to show that he doesn't get it. He makes great leaps and assumptions about what consumers want, okay, that's what a reviewer is supposed to do, but do I have to get talked down to if I don't agree with the wisdom handed down from on high? I compared my daughters with a borrowed ipod touch for almost a month before I decided to buy mine, there is no way I would by a touch after that. Why not? SCREEN SIZE. Would a 7" tablet be nicer to read on? Yeah it would. Does a 7" tablet fit in my back pocket? No. And I'd feel just a little silly walking the dog and holding a 7" tablet in my hand just so I could listen to music. Yes a phone this size with an awesome data plan would be sweet. But I don't want to shell out the monthly bucks for the data plan, so that's out.
I do a ton of reading with this, why? because it can fit in my pocket and the screen is big enough to accommodate it.
I don't have an ax to grind with Apple, is this too late to really compete with the ipod? Why do I care? I just want something that is gonna last and have reasonable support, I'm not buying a product to take sides in a trade war.
So CNET/Mr. Bell, take a look at the customer reviews for this thing, maybe you need to re-calibrate.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I'm sorry, but this review is the most shocking case of unprofessional journalism I've ever seen. If there's one thing I know as a writer, it's never to insult your readers. This reviewer basically says that anyone who is interested in reading the review must not be interested in Apple products. No, actually I enjoy my iPod Touch very much, thank you. I also enjoy having choices and alternatives though. I also enjoy reading reviews that are fair to the product. This article popped up on my computer screen because I wanted to see a review of the Galaxy Player, not a comparison of the Galaxy Player to another device. If you wanted to do that, fine, but try changing the article to a more appropriate title next time.

Shame shame.. bad biased reviewing...

Summary: I'm in the market for a new mp3 smart-player and would like to try an alternative to Apple. I love and live on my iPod touch (Owned it for about 3 years now), but it's becoming slow as a snail, the gyroscope is wonky and the battery life has diminished greatly (although I expect this from a rechargeable, unremovable lithium battery). After a fluke run to Best Buy, I saw the Samsung Galaxy and almost dismissed it for fear it was just another phone. Something pulled me in and I gave it a try. I compared it to my personal view of my iPod and while it does seem like I am bashing it, know that I'm not trying to. Like I said, I LOVE my iPod but the Galaxy sure does have some awesome specs and in my opinion, some of them better than the iPod.
While I was test running the Galaxy I was instantly amazed. It was fluid, instantaneous and accurate. I loved the moving/interactive backgrounds and I was taken aback by the huge screen. Compared to my iPod, it seems gargantuan. I have been dying for the larger screen ever since. The LED flash made my jaw drop as I have been very unhappy with the iPod's camera which does not have flash at all and even in sunlight, takes pretty crappy pictures. The expandable memory is a huge plus; I have a 4 gb mini-sd stick waiting to be used and this is the perfect thing to use it for. 8G's isn't much on the iPod especially when you take loads of pictures with it, so expandable memory is great.
I like to consider myself a person that likes to 'color outside the lines' and I appreciate the 'drag and drop your icons anywhere' ability. The iPod has rows of icons in which you can drop the icons, but you have to stay 'within the lines' or make folders. Not much freedom in this department.
I have to say though, if I wouldn't have tested it out and just went based off of this C-Net review, I would have probably passed it up without much thought. Shame shame.. So many people trust c-net (including myself) for UNBIASED reviews, but this one basically is saying 'don't buy this. It's not worth it."
I live my life on my ipod and the galaxy seems like the perfect player for those that don't need the phone aspect and prefer the pocket-size. I initially wanted an IPad myself, but the fact that it's so large and needs it's own carrying case is really a turn off. At least with the galaxy, I know I can still pocket it or throw it in my purse without too much hassle.
I love change and the android market seems like it would be a good change to make to. The Apple App store is chock-full of crappy apps that take forever to weed through, so I'm looking forward to the market instead. I know it carries my free texting app, which I used on a daily basis at home and most of the games I already have on the ipod. I don't need much else.
I'm hoping to pick this up in the very near future and award my fiance with my decrepit ipod. :31 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
