The good: The affordable SanDisk Sansa c100 series boasts a simple and effective control interface; a small but handy color LCD that displays photos and album art; extra features such as an FM tuner, voice recording, and photo support; and compatibility with Audible and WMA subscription services.
The bad: The SanDisk Sansa c100 series utilizes a proprietary USB cable and has poor battery life for a AAA unit. It also offers poor voice and FM recordings, and you can hear a tiny click when you start a track.
The bottom line: The SanDisk Sansa c100 series gives you a decent set of features for a decent price, but don't expect great battery life.

Hard to judge when the player won't work
by cfsinger on August 5, 2006
Pros: sucking up my time, oh no wait, that's a con

Summary: A few weeks after I bought the SanDisk Sanse, it started playing a beeping sound instead of music. I set up an exchange with SanDisk and got a new one from them. Within an hour of loading songs and playing them, the new player broke. By this time, I could no longer return the player to the store. With all the time spent shipping out the old player and waiting for the new one, I had passed the returns deadline of the store. I should have just returned the first player to the store. Instead SanDIsk refuses to refund my money and I'm stuck with a broken player!

Unit provides good sound and ease of use...when working
by Senso Unico on April 2, 2006
Pros: Easy to download and manage music files.
Cons: On the first day I had problems with the unit hanging up. By the third day the unit is inoperable.

Summary: I could not find a reference to this problem at the SanDisk FAQ's nor a general search of the Internet. Sandisk technical support recommended that I remove the battery for 10 minutes, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, reinstall the battery and power the unit up. Jump down, turn around, pick a bale of hay. I tried this repeatedly with no luck. I do like the unit when it is working so will return it for replacement. While I do not usually purchase extended warranties I am pleased that I spent the additional cash in this case.
Updated
The replacement c140 worked for 1/2 hour then locked up. SanDisk tech support said they believe the problem is in the music files downloaded from Rhapsody though Rhapsody indicates they support the Sansa c140. As it is I am not able to reset, reformat, or access this unit in any way.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Only complaint is that there is no armband designed for this product available yet and the supplied lanyard is a joke. The lanyard is made of the same black plastic material as the headphones and is constantly getting tangled. Still a good product for the price.Just desperatly need an armband. Affordable enough to buy one for me and one for my wife at a price less than 1 cr-apple.

Horrible reputation, many broken issues, non functional

Summary: Just search the web and you'll see that this device should never have been released to the consumer. I have 10 hours of my time into trying to get it to work reliably. Multiple contacts with tech support who feel the solution is to keep flashing the device, remove battery, press this and that replace battery, etc.
FM hum when screen is lit, freezes on boot or won't boot at all, dead and black, looses stored music all the time, after sync won't correctly restart, and dead again.
Everyone is saying they quit within the first few weeks. This is the case with mine.
Sandisk needs a class action suit to get them to recall this junk!!!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great bang for the buck

Summary: I have had this player for about 2 weeks now, and I LOVE it. It is so small that I can literally carry it with me wherever I go. It is about the size of a large pack of gum. Of course the sound quality from the supplied headphones is less than desireable, when I plug in my Sennheiser headphones it sounds GREAT. This is a great bang for the buck player and I highly recommend it for anyone wishing to have ease of use and portability all in a very attractive little case.
I do wish they made more case options for the 100 series though. I have the clear silicon case and it works to protect the player but it doesn't have any screen protection which is what I really wanted. An armband case with a screen protector would be very nice!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great sound, quality, features, and price!
by vicereborn on March 20, 2006
Pros: uses aaa battery, colour screen, liquidmetal casing, scratch resistant, apple quality sound, alot of features
Cons: The only one I could think of is the battery life because since it'll be running in colour on an aaa battery.

Summary: I have been waiting for this player for quite some time, for sure when it comes out I am going to get it. I LOVE Sandisk I have previously purchased 2 of their older mp3 players and was very happy with it, and this ones seems to blow my other players away! FYI Sandisk uses the same audio chipset as Apple, so its sounds quality for one should be the same. This has a pretty colour lcd screen, though not big, its a big plus which will allow you to view photos and slideshows while listenning to music. I am pretty sure it will have album art too. It comes in a 2gig version aswell, highly durable made with liquidmetal technologies which is highly scratch resistant. It has an Fm tuner, and voice recorder. Well from my past experiences their headphones are garbage and break within a couple days. This player is coming out late March for US and Europe with as MSRP of
119.99$ US, I hope Canada gets it at the same time. SO in all this player is sexy inside and out! :P1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

continuously crashing

Summary: I already have a 30gig 5G iPOd, which is very nice, but I wanted something I could use with a subscription service. I use Rhapsody to Go. I decided to try the Sandisk Sansa c140. I actually like its look and feel. It has very decent sound quality. I WANT to like this product, and maybe with a firmware update things will improve. However, with this product's serious instability issues, it is not worth your money at this point.
Updated
I called SanDisk customer support (They actually answered promptly, and on a Sat. night, even), and the representative I spoke with told me that they have had others calling with similar problems with products from the c100 line. The good news, however, is that they are planning to release a firmware update sometime in the coming weeks that will hopefully resolve these issues. I will try to report back if that happens.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Stay away from this terror...
by aldehulma on December 18, 2009
Pros: Works with NiMH batteries.
it's... light.Cons: Uncomfortable shape for being in your pockets. Breaks EXTREMELY easily. (thin plastic) Battery life is very low. The screen oddly filled with dirt or something after a week. Syncing takes forever (5+ hours on 1 Gb for me) Headphones are crap.
Summary: Seriously. Don't buy this. It's not worth it at half the price it says here. Believe me, I got it for only 35 bucks and still feel ripped ...
Summary: Seriously. Don't buy this. It's not worth it at half the price it says here. Believe me, I got it for only 35 bucks and still feel ripped off. Lasted 2 weeks before the thing shattered into pieces while snowboarding. I'm glad it's gone.
