SanDisk Sansa c250 (2GB) price range: $99.99
- Reviewed by: Jasmine France

The good: The SanDisk Sansa c200 series player is an exceptional value, considering its assortment of features. It comes with a FM radio, a voice recorder, photo viewer, a built-in MicroSD slot for adding memory, and even a user-replaceable, rechargeable battery. Navigating menus is a breeze.
The bad: The menu interface is boring and screen quality subpar. Sound quality is far from impressive; there's no video support. The player uses a proprietary USB port. And, there's no 4GB version.
The bottom line: Thanks to its exceptional value and user-friendly features, the SanDisk Sansa c200 is an acceptable choice for youngsters and first-timers--but more sophisticated users would be better off shelling out a bit more for a better player.

I'm 61 and found the instructions rather minimal. However, it's user friendly enough that I figured out most of the workings after a few emails to the company. I don't think you should have to do this! This is the main reason I'm not giving it a 9 rating.
I think the sound quality is excellent, although you might have to fiddle with the equalizer controls to find the best sound.
Ignore the editors' reviews if you're looking for something relatively easy to use. I think they look for bells and whistles that most of us don't use or even understand. I still haven't filled this thing up with the 500 songs that are in its capacity after a couple of months.
Not bad for $100 Canadian!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Compact, straightforward, low fuss MP3 player

Summary: Sandisk has, IMO, struck a good balance between functionality and price with the C250. At 2GB you get enough music to keep you going for a chunk of a week with no repeats and if you're willing to endure the extra turn-on delay (~20 seconds) you can bump up the capacity to 4GB with a microSD memory. The picture viewing feature is only fair with it's fairly small screen and you'll have to install Sandisk's proprietary picture format converter to get your pix into it. Frankly if you're looking to show pix around get something bigger or use your laptop. Big kudos to Sansa for making the display legible. I suffered with iRiver's micro-tiny print on their old "prism" player and the ability to read the display on the Sansa with my 50 year old eyes without a magnifying glass was a big win!
The user interface is reasonable and not horribly dependent on nested menus. The few control buttons are used well and I would rate it's interface only a couple of notches below Apple's (much pricier) Nano. I could wish that Song and Album title display supported sideways scrolling since I use it for audiobooks whose titles frequently fall off the right end of the display.
I'm very happy with the sound quality but my older ears aren't so golden anymore so audiophiles beware. A balance control would be nice for us folks who don't have "balanced" hearing anymore too.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent value for the price!

Summary: This is my first MP3 player. I bought it after researching my options; and yes, I had read the CNET editor's harsh review. My primary uses are to listen to music while exercising and when working on my company laptop. I didn't want to spend the $ on an iPod Nano, and I don't need any frills. The FM tuner is a nice touch, especially for picking up Colts games when I’m away from the TV. When I saw Best Buy offering the c250 for only $69.99, I knew my decision was made.
Our PC has Windows XP SP2 and WMP 11, which made loading music and playlists ridiculously easy. I have over 400 songs loaded in 128 Kbps WMA format. The display quality isn’t stellar, but it does the job. And album art IS available: Just press the silver Select button while a song is playing to toggle between the song information and the album art.
The documentation is tragically lacking, but if you have prior MP3 player experience or are tech-savvy, you will figure it out quickly. My only real complaint is that the build quality doesn’t give the impression of rugged durability. I am not too worried as I tend to be very easy on my gadgets.
I did pick up a set of JVC HA-FX55ZB in-ear headphones to better eliminate the noise from my treadmill and keep the phones in my ears when I’m active. The sound from the JVC’s is excellent, although the pair that SanDisk includes are not bad.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

I have been on hold, over the course of 6 months, countless hours with people who know very little English and even less about this product. Don't buy any Sansa product, I emplore you.

Summary: I had to sign up for CNet membership just so I could leave an opinion. I'm waiting for iRiver Clix 2, so I bought Sansa c250 to bridge the gap and I couldn't be more pleased with the product. I was synching music in less than 5 minutes after plugging in. But I think the product is best suited for a particular buyer: looking for value, you use Windows Media Player to manage your library, you don't need a ton of features, and you need FM radio to go along with your music files. If you meet this criteria, you should definately consider this product.

Terrible - NO TECH SUPPORT as it's a 'legacy' item.
by bassist13 on October 25, 2010
Pros: well i liked wasting my time on the 'live chat' being told the item was not eligible for discussion as it was a 'legacy' item.i loved wasting more time filling out forms for tech support email......
Cons: unit never worked right from the get-go. sansa still sells this crap ,yet when you need support or live chat they tell you it's email support only as it's a 'legacy' item. How is that when it's for sale, new, today? Can you say 'rip-off artist?
Summary: Stay away from this unit unless you like email support. Check the company's website BEFORE buying one of their still-for-sale 'legacy' items for a list of stuff they make ...
Summary: Stay away from this unit unless you like email support. Check the company's website BEFORE buying one of their still-for-sale 'legacy' items for a list of stuff they make and sell but dont want to properly support via phone or live chat.
p.s. they told me today (10.25.10 - live chat) 'no,this is no longer sold, that;s why it's under legacy items'. A quick search yielded many stores selling it BRAND NEW today ! Something's wrong with this picture...... -

Easy to use, lots of features, GREAT DEAL!!
by susie_sunshine on April 27, 2009
Pros: - Simple to put music on
- Size is good
- Music quality is fine
- $35 price tag.
- preset equalizers by genre and a customizable eq.Cons: - There's a lot of clicking involved to navigate the menus.
- Can't set up multiple playlists on it.Summary: I got this for Xmas in 2007, but didn't use it because I didn't listen to music that much at the time. I just started using it again ...
Summary: I got this for Xmas in 2007, but didn't use it because I didn't listen to music that much at the time. I just started using it again and it still works well and sounds good. I expected the battery to be shot because I hadn't used it for a long time but it's fine.
Over all, this is a great little machine. I easily taught my Luddite bf how to navigate the menus AND add and remove music from it. I personally don't need more than 400 songs at any one time because I get frustrated scrolling thru so many titles/artists. It is good to have a PC where you can store the rest of your music. For people who do want to carry a whole library around with them, there is mini-SD card slot which I hear can add as much as 12 add'l gb.
The sound is good, maybe not stellar, but hey for $35 it's awesome and it goes loud enough to drown out the sound of the T (Boston subway). Not that I'm that person on the T though. The bass is pretty rich and the uppers are sharp and clear. The volume buttons are conveniently placed so when one goes from outside to inside, everyone inside doesn't have to hear what you're listening to.
The color is cool, love the cheery bright pink. I think it might be scratch resistant becuse it still looks nice, except for the fingerprints.
I'm a fan of flash players because they're more versatile. A draw back is the lack of AC cord though you can buy it separately.
Lastly, because of the low price, if you get it wet or lose it, you're not out $400! -
nasty audio jack
by goldder on January 31, 2009
Pros: inexpensive workable mp3 for young teenagers
Cons: the audio jack wears out within months...we've had to replace it within the warranty period twice...! The good news is that they will replace it if it wears out within the warranty period...even the replacement one!
Summary: I wouldn't buy it again. Even though we have been able to replace it because of the defect, it is a hassle to keep going through this again and ...
Summary: I wouldn't buy it again. Even though we have been able to replace it because of the defect, it is a hassle to keep going through this again and again. Plus having to wait for shipping and handling.
I also have an e-series and that one has been pretty much trouble free...aside from the problems of reformatting and firmware updates...it has been a good friend. -
Not a good choice!
by philliesfan2008 on December 8, 2008
Pros: Small and light, compact.
Cons: The battery life is terrible. Takes hrs to charge and doesn't last very long. Doesn't save volume setting once turned off and distorts at high volumes. Uses a cable that is not compatible with any other device. Don't waste your money on this!
Summary: I've had simpler Sansa mp3 players that worked much better than this, so I figured I'd upgrade to this one. Now I wish I'd never bought it! ...
