The good: The Sony S-Series Walkman is very inexpensive and easy to use; it offers support for multiple audio codecs as well as subscription music and Amazon video; photos and videos look great on the big, bright screen; audio quality is superb and the rated battery life is impressive; the unit features external speakers and an alarm clock function; the FM tuner and voice recorder work excellently.
The bad: The Sony S-Series Walkman no longer offers noise cancellation or upgraded headphones; there's no podcast support, SenseMe Channels, or on-the-go playlists; getting video onto the device can be a hassle.
The bottom line: The Sony S-Series Walkman is a solid entry-level MP3 player thanks to its ultra-affordable price tag, easy-to-use design, excellent performance, and fair smattering of features--but those who are looking to upgrade from the previous generation will not be impressed.

solid, dependable... but a battery issue and a peeve
by vedalimir on January 24, 2011
Pros: It's a solid mp3 player. No nonsense. A workhorse.
Cons: Battery life is a little wobbly, becoming unreliable after a year. Sony software, included, isn't terribly friendly. Player indexing of songs can be unpredictable on occasion.

Summary: Despite the drawbacks listed above, this is a pretty good, pretty reliable mp3 player. My Walkman's battery life was a little wobbly here and there from the start but has deteriorated very rapidly since it passed the one-year mark with me. That's the worst part, and I admit it's a doozy. That said, I had it playing almost all of my time awake, usually in the car or hooked to my home stereo, and I was recharging it a lot. Maybe my usage was more than the norm. I can't say. But it was reliable most of the time, and I was quite happy with it.

I can simply say that I like this.

Pros: awesome sound quality, customizeable eq, speakers, voice recording, radio recording, nice bright screen, convenient home menu buttons
Cons: sync weirdness, boring, not the best earbuds, speaker/battery life issue, scratches, TOO light
Summary: So, I'm pretty pleased with my Walkman. I'm sick of seeing fancy mp3 players, so I thought this would be a nice change.
The first thing I noticed ...Summary: So, I'm pretty pleased with my Walkman. I'm sick of seeing fancy mp3 players, so I thought this would be a nice change.
The first thing I noticed when I bought this was how light it was. I was surprised, and a bit disappointed. I like my electronics to feel solid. The earphone jack was in an odd place, on the left side instead of the right, so I had a tiny bit of trouble with that. I was pleased with the screen quality, the size, and the design.
The first day I bought it though, I put it in my pocket and at the end of the day, there were VERY many scratches on it, including a rather deep one on the buttons. This bothers me from time to time, but doesn't really diminish the quality.
The sound is great. I liked being able to have 2 custom eqs. It's crisp, despite low quality headphones.
The speakers give me a bit of trouble. First of all, the battery lfie. Now, the battery life is wonderful when I'm just using the earbuds, but when I put it on speaker for 15 minutes, half of the battery life is gone and then I'm going through the rest of the day paranoid that my mp3 player will die. But for small speakers, the quality is ok. Another problem I had is that if you put it down, there were speakers on the back and it blocked the sound. I do not understand the reasonings behind front & back speakers. It's not like people carry the stand around.
The buttons. Not difficult to figure out, but still somewhat bothersome. It takes me a little bit to find a certain button in the dark, to make sure i don't click a button stacked on top.
When I plugged it in it would sync things that I didn't want on it; things that I had downloaded while charging it. This isn't a big deal.
I was very pleased with the recording. It picked up sound nicely, from distances as well, and the quality was decent too. You can even change the recording quality. I was also happy with the fact that I could record songs from the radio, without limited time. For stupid commercials I'd just pause it.
I'm still scared this will break easily. So far I've dropped it a few times and it's never frozen up or anything, but just how it feels in my hands makes it seem very breakable.
The display is pretty, but I wish there were color choices. I really liked the clock display, but sometimes it was annoying flashing so often. I liked that there was a shuffle all and now playing button right on the main menu.
This player can be taken seriously. It lacks interesting features, but is still of good quality, AND price.
