The good: The Sony S-Series Walkman is very inexpensive and easy to use; it offers support for multiple audio codecs as well as subscription music and Amazon video; photos and videos look great on the big, bright screen; audio quality is superb and the rated battery life is impressive; the unit features external speakers and an alarm clock function; the FM tuner and voice recorder work excellently.
The bad: The Sony S-Series Walkman no longer offers noise cancellation or upgraded headphones; there's no podcast support, SenseMe Channels, or on-the-go playlists; getting video onto the device can be a hassle.
The bottom line: The Sony S-Series Walkman is a solid entry-level MP3 player thanks to its ultra-affordable price tag, easy-to-use design, excellent performance, and fair smattering of features--but those who are looking to upgrade from the previous generation will not be impressed.

Outstanding and simple
by righttocarry56 on March 13, 2010
Pros: Incredible battery life; superior sound quality to any other device I have ever owned; easy win explorer drag and drop or use Sony content manager; great screen; nice simple controls; good video; never had to "reset" it for any reason
Cons: playlist (in win media 11) assumes you are only computer user and wants to sync whole library on connect. That is pathetic. If I gave a darn about playlists, this would really annoy me but I don't.
Summary: For price, features, build quality and reliability nothing is better. And since it is a MUSIC player to me above all else, Love the advanced EQ in this device; leave ...
Summary: For price, features, build quality and reliability nothing is better. And since it is a MUSIC player to me above all else, Love the advanced EQ in this device; leave your car system flat and EQ through the Sony and you won't regret it!!! scratches easily so take care of it, don't put it in your pocket with anything else.

Summary: This is the best i have used in a long time, Actually ever. Small enough to go to the gym, Powerful enough to jam out over my car stereo.<---Sounds better than cd's in my deck.
The battery life is AMAZING! I go the whole 7 day week with no charging.
Easiest interface i have ever used. Love LOVE love the music sync. Windows media makes it simple to creat a playlist BEFORE loading the music onto your player. Ipods itunes is AWFUL.
Like i said before. The sound quality is worth is alone. Sony blows the big tough Apple guys out of the water. They keep it real and provide what you actually use, not see.
Buy with confidence, trust me. Its a great player. Great. First thing i did was buy a case to keep this player like new. Hope to get long years out of it.
A+++++++ Sony! Kudos to your player and intelligence!

A lot for the money with minor flaws
by techphantom on December 25, 2009
Pros: Amazing sound quality, built-in speakers, mic, alarm, sleep timer, FM tuner/recorder, sleek design (slimmer than I'd imagined from pictures), gorgeous screen that's larger than most, easy to sync with WMP, cheap for 16GB!
Cons: Cheap headphones, lacking EQ genres, fingerprint-prone front, no line-in rec, awkward button layout, flush toggles on side, no wallpaper choices (can't use images of your own), must use menus to rotate layout, no included strap to use in strap hole

Summary: After much research and deliberation, I purchased this 545 model to replace my Zen V Plus (I miss it!) that was acting up. I knew I had to go forward, which meant no losing options the Zen already had. This has almost all of them: A mic, FM tuner, great sound, sleek design, respected brand name, easy-to-understand menus, etc.
In the line of moving forward and up from the Zen, this gives me 4x the capacity (at the same price I'd paid 2 years ago for the 4GB Zen!!) The price was a MAJOR factor in the purchase--who else sells something with these features and quality at that price? Other step ups: FM recording, 1" larger screen (seems like more), built-in speakers which actually sound quite good and are in stereo.
Steps back/down: no line-in recorder like the Zen V Plus (even Creative has removed these, unfortunately). I like those for recording music in higher quality from my digital piano, etc. Also, no sync with Outlook, etc, no calendar options (that I could tell), no neck strap, no pouch like the Zen to keep things together and protected.
Overall, the sound is great and with 2 EQ settings to customize, you can get the sound you want. I found each of the preset ones slightly flawed for what I was listening too (too metallic here, too muddy there) and wish there were more (what is with "Heavy" when the bass isn't really amped and what the heck is "Unique" supposed to mean? What about rock, country, orchestral, and spoken for EQ settings?)
The headphones, while expectedly cheap, were already blown-sounding on first use. The left side buzzed at mid-level volume and renders them useless, which is unacceptable. Sony invented small, portable headphones--think they'd be able to throw in decent (working) ones. In addition, there are no pads, so you get a hard plastic bud to put in your ear, which isn't painful or anything, but less desirable.
Also, I agree with an above comment about the Mickey Mouse placement of buttons--almost passed because of the look. The buttons and toggles are all quite flush and are awkward to operate in the dark or on the fly and I often hit Back or Option when I want an arrow. The arrow pad is cool on its own though and is just like a vinyl record (even in the fact that it's very scratch-prone).
Another gripe is a common sense-defying choice by Sony. The Walkman is not tiny, but could be worn around the neck if you wanted. In fact, it WAS designed with a hole to put a strap through (like a camera has) but Sony failed to include a strap! Why? Was string and cord too much to ask for? I'd rather not put it in my pocket with my change and scratch up a $120 device! Even the little Zen came with a strap and headphones with soft felt pads.
Summary: It's affordable, has gorgeous images, can be used to share video, pictures, and music with large screen and stereo speakers, comes in nice colors (what's with more options in the smaller capacity though?), is easy to use, and has ability to be propped with stand to view better.
It also has some EQ deficiencies, sometimes difficult buttons, poor headphones, no place to keep stand (so it's bound to be lost), and 1.3GB are used by software/firmware. -
Nice , good priced large capacity player with speakers
by jrwt54 on October 30, 2009
Pros: Price, Price, Price. Large capacity. Pretty easy to use. Sound is great even from the Speakers. The screen is really bright and videos play really well.
Cons: I really don't understand the Content Transfer software. I can't get one of my videos to drag and drop from Windows Explorer.

Summary: I payed a lot more for my old 2G player (iriver Clix) and I couldn't find another large capacity device that I was willing to pay the price for (that was after looking at almost everything). I really like this player for its sound quality. Even the speakers sound great. It was pretty easy to transfer my music with WMP, but I had one video that won't transfer so I tried Content Transfer but that didn't work either. The only reason I didn't give it excellent was its lack of really coolness. For such a nice player it could be better.
After using this player for awhile I have to say its really good for the price. I bought a care on Sony earbuds and I really love the sound. Best and most avoidable player I've seen so far.
