Summary: GOOD DECENT PLAYER, BUT I AM WONDERING WHY TRANSCEND IS SELLING THEIR DIGITAL MUSIC PLAYER WITHOUT THE AVAILABLITY OF THE EARPHONES IN EVEN IMPORTANT COUNTRY LIKE INDIA. I SUGGEST THE TRANSCEND TO STOP SELLING THEIR MUSIC PLAYER IN INDIA, I THINK I AND MY FRIENDS WASTED OUR MONEY IN PURCHASING THE MP 860, INSPITE OF SEVERAL EMAIL TO TRANSCEND , NO RESPONSE FROM TRANSCEND OR ACTION TAKEN TO MAKE AVAILABLE OF THE EARPHONES IN INDIA.
I SUGGEST TO BUY COWON WHERE THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS GOOD.

Summary: My last player was a Cowon iAudio7 which was a full featured player with renown audio quality, and unreal (60 hour) battery life. It had most of the features this player does and I loved it. The design wasn't as solid as it could have been so it kept breaking. After it died completely I decided to move on.
I was frustrated on looking at the current market of players as none really featured all the stuff my old one had. It seemed features were being stripped and I was one of those gadget geeks who used features and didn't want to compromise with my next choice. I was looking for a player that:
-Used a standard USB cable
-Required no software if I chose to use it that way
-Bookmarked
-Had decent battery life
-Had FM radio
-Had line-in record
-Had built-in mic
-Played back open formats
-Had more than 8gb
-Had great audio
-Had a user customizable EQ
I almost gave up until I focused on the Transcend MP860 a bit closer. I guess I had skipped over it on retailer sites because of its low price. I assumed it was a featureless barebones player until I did look closer.
I was surprised that it had everything I was looking for and more; it allowed use while it was charging, it had an expansion memory slot which made it quite futureproof, it had a small built-in speaker which has come in handy in a few instances, and it had a good manufacturer site which provided frequent firmware updates. The sleep timer is a stand-out amazing feature as I often listen to my player as I doze off.
It had a really solid design and came with a silicone case which is the perfect compromise between protection and size increase. I've taken it snowboarding many times and had zero problems. The battery even holds up well in the cold.
The price was also amazing. I think I paid around $85CAD all-in at my local shop. I bought another 8 gig microsd card on top of that to make the player a full 16 gigs.
The software environment is really the only downside. I mean it's a clean OS (no glitches) but it's over-designed especially when it comes to playback navigation. Most of the menu items should be assigned to the alternate button function, not constantly be in your way of main functions. The "going back" button if pressed a bunch of times should end back on track playback like it does with most players, instead it sits at the main menu. Getting to functions like the sleep timer is a bit cumbersome (it's in the settings menu) especially when you just want to hit it and doze off. When you playback a bookmark, after the bookmarked file is done playing the playback stops or goes onto the next bookmark instead of continuing onto the next track in the bookmarked file's folder. The look of the OS is very MP3 1.0. It would be nice if it allowed skins or was made to look sleeker. The click responsiveness is a bit slow too, but not by too much.
I don't want to overstate the ills of the software though, it still plays back perfect and works perfect. It just could be streamlined in a few ways.
The battery life could be better but then again I was coming from a player that had like 60 hour so I never had to consciously charge it. I haven't zeroed the battery on the MP860 yet but I was a bit spoiled earlier when I didn't even have to think about battery with a player half the size
Overall the player is stellar especially for the price. Full-function users will get a kick out of the Transcend MP860 as it really has it all. I hope this helps.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
